“so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another." (Romans 12:5)
As members of the body of Christ, we should be aware that we are part of a bigger whole: Each of us has a unique role to play in supporting that body. But Paul reminds us here that on a smaller scale, we are called to relate to one another individually as well.
How often do I think about the people in my parish, prayer group, or faith community? Each may have something special to offer me. One person may bring out a sense of humor I didn't know I had, so that together we can laugh at life's ups and downs. Another may honor me by pointing to the wisdom or patience I have learned over the years. I may not be aware of such gifts unless someone else mentions them, especially if I tend to focus only on my weaknesses and not my strengths.
It is also true that I have something to give other believers. If I approach each person with profound respect and openness, I may be able to see how God is calling someone forward, or equipping them for a new challenge. Another person may draw out my compassion, leading me to pray for what he or she needs at this exact moment. As I look at my brothers and sisters with the eyes of Christ, I can help them develop the goodness I see unfolding within them.
The spiritual gifts Paul mentions­ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity, leadership, acts of mercy­are most effective when they are nurtured by other Christians. It's hard to exercise any gift without at least some kind of encouragement. Perhaps that's why Paul advises us to be sincere and affectionate in our dealings with each other, and to "anticipate one another in showing honor" (Romans 12:9-10).
Which brothers and sisters will you encounter today? Who has meant a lot to you and encouraged you in the past? Have you thanked that person? Whom do you find challenging to love? May the Lord open our eyes to see each person's unique gifts, and to honor every member of his body on earth.

“우리도 수가 많지만 그리스도 안에 한 몸을 이루면서 서로서로 지체가 됩니다.”(로마 12,5)
우리는 그리스도의 몸을 이루는 구성원으로서 자신이 더 큰 전체의 일부분임을 자각해야 합니다. 곧, 우리 각자는 그 몸을 뒷받침하는 고유한 역할을 맡고 있습니다. 그러나 바오로 사도가 여기서 우리에게 일깨우는 바는, 보다 세부적인 영역에서도 우리 각자는 서로서로 긴밀히 연결되도록 부름 받았다는 것입니다.
나는 우리 본당이나 기도 모임, 신앙공동체에 속한 사람들을 얼마나 자주 생각합니까? 그들 한 사람 한 사람이 나에게 특별한 것을 줄 수도 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 나 자신도 몰랐던 유머 감각을 이끌어내서 인생의 고비를 함께 웃어넘길 수 있게 할 수도 있지요. 또 어떤 사람은 내가 여러 해에 걸쳐 습득한 지혜나 인내심을 추켜세워 줌으로써 사람들이 나를 존경하게 할 수도 있습니다. 이렇듯 나는 누가 일러 주기 전에는 내가 어떤 은사를 받았는지 미처 깨닫지 못할 수 있습니다. 내가 나의 장점이 아니라 약점에만 관심을 기울이려 한다면 특히 더 그렇지요.
한편 나한테도 다른 신자들에게 줄 것이 있습니다. 내가 진심 어린 관심과 열린 마음으로 한 사람 한 사람에게 다가간다면, 하느님께서 어떻게 누군가를 앞으로 불러내시는지, 혹은 새로운 도전에 준비시키시는지 볼 수 있게 될지도 모릅니다. 또 어떤 사람한테 연민의 마음이 들어 바로 그때에 그 사람이 필요로 하는 것을 위해 기도드리게 될지도 모릅니다. 내가 형제자매들을 그리스도의 눈길로 바라보면, 나는 그들 안에 잠재되어 있던 선량한 마음을 알아보고 그 선량함을 키워나가도록 도울 수 있습니다.
바오로 사도가 이야기한 영적인 은사들 - 봉사, 가르침, 권면, 순순한 마음, 지도력, 자비를 베푸는 것 - 은 다른 그리스도인들이 북돋워 줄 때 가장 효과적으로 발휘됩니다. 어떤 식으로든 최소한의 격려도 없이 은사를 발휘하기란 어렵습니다. 바오로 사도가 우리에게 서로를 대할 때 거짓이 없고 자애롭고 “서로 존경하는 일에 먼저 나서십시오.”라고 조언하는 것은 아마도 그 때문일 것입니다.(로마 12,9-10)
당신은 오늘 어떤 형제자매를 만나려 합니까? 누가 과거에 당신에게 잘해 주었고 당신을 격려해 주었나요? 당신은 그 사람에게 감사하다는 말을 전했나요? 당신이 사랑하기 어려운 이는 누구인가요? 주님께서 당신의 눈을 열어 한 사람 한 사람의 고유한 은사를 보게 해 주시기를, 그리고 지상에 있는 그분 몸의 모든 구성원들을 존중하게 해 주시기를 바랍니다.

오늘 서로에게 축복이 되는 법을
저희 모두에게 보여 주십시오.”
