It's probable that the Pharisees who asked Jesus, "When is the kingdom of God going to come?" were rather skeptical. They were more interested in catching him off guard than in learning the truth of his message. Jesus may have intrigued them, but they weren't about to accept that he was the promised Messiah. And they'd heard enough about this kingdom he kept referring to: If there was such a glorious kingdom, they surely couldn't see it anywhere!
Although our motivations are far different, we often ask Jesus the same question: "When is your kingdom going to come?" We or our loved ones may be going through a time of suffering, and we feel so overwhelmed that God seems a million miles from our situation. Perhaps we're even a little angry. God hasn't worked in the way we hoped he would, and though we haven't lost our faith, we are challenging him: "Lord, just when are you going to act?"
To all of us, Jesus has the same answer: "The kingdom of God is among you!" It's not that God doesn't see our pain. It's not that he can't or won't intervene in a spectacular way. But the greatest miracles often happen when we recognize Jesus in the middle of the storm. That's when he came to the apostles, to calm the sea around their boat and to show them that faith grows stronger when it is tested (Matthew 8:26). The one who rebuked the wind and the waves delights in calming our turmoil as well!
What situation are you dealing with right now? Whatever it is, rest assured that God's hand is upon you. There is no place on earth, nor any emotional depth you can sink to, where you will not find him (Psalm 139:7-12). He has borne the sorrows of all his children on the cross, and even now, he wants to take yours. All you need to do is come to him. "Have no anxiety at all," he urges you. So give control of your situation to him, and the "peace that passes all understanding" will be yours (Philippians 4:7).

예수님께 “하느님의 나라가 언제 옵니까?” 하고 물었던 바리사이들은 아마 회의를 품고 있었을 것입니다. 그들은 그분의 말씀에 담긴 진리를 배우기보다는 그분을 난처하게 만드는 데에 더 관심이 있었습니다. 그들이 예수님께 마음이 끌렸을 수도 있지만, 그분이 바로 오시기로 한 구세주라는 것을 인정하려 들지 않았습니다. 그리고 그들은 그분이 되풀이해 말씀하시는 하느님 나라에 대해서도 지겹도록 들었습니다. 그러니 그런 영광스러운 나라가 있어도 당연히 그들은 그것을 전혀 볼 수 없었던 것이지요!
동기는 전혀 다를지 몰라도 우리도 예수님께 같은 질문을 할 때가 종종 있습니다. “당신의 나라가 언제 올까요?” 우리가 또는 우리가 사랑하는 사람이 고통스러운 시간을 보내고 있는데 하느님은 우리의 처지 따위 아랑곳없이 아주 멀리에 계시는 것 같아 견디기 힘들 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 조금 화가 날 수도 있겠지요. 하느님께서 우리가 바라는 대로 일해 주시지 않으니까요. 그래서 우리는 믿음을 잃은 게 아니면서도 그분께 조릅니다. “주님, 도대체 언제 행동하시렵니까?”
예수님께서는 우리 모두에게 같은 답을 주십니다. “하느님의 나라는 너희 가운데에 있다!” 하느님께서는 우리의 아픔을 외면하시는 것이 아닙니다. 놀라운 방식으로 중재할 수 없거나 하지 않으려 해서도 아닙니다. 정말 경이로운 기적은 우리가 풍랑의 한가운데에서 예수님을 알아볼 때에 일어납니다. 그때 예수님께서는 제자들에게 다가가셔서 배 주위의 바다를 잠재우시고, 믿음은 시험당할 때 더 강해진다는 것을 보여 주셨습니다.(마태 8,26) 바람과 물결을 꾸짖으신 분이 우리 마음의 동요도 기꺼이 잠재우십니다!
당신은 바로 지금 어떤 상황에 처해 있습니까? 그것이 무엇이든 하느님이 손길이 당신에게 있음을 믿고 안심하십시오. 당신은 이 땅 어디에서도, 당신이 겪고 있는 어떤 극한 감정에서도 주님을 뵈올 수 있습니다.(시편 139,7-12) 그분은 십자가상에서 자녀들의 슬픔을 모두 짊어지셨으며, 지금도 당신의 슬픔을 지고 싶어하십니다. 당신이 할 일은 오로지 그분께 가는 것입니다. 그분은 당신에게 “아무것도 걱정하지 마라.” 하고 권고하십니다. 그러니 그분께서 당신이 처한 상황을 주도하게 해 드리면 “사람의 모든 이해를 뛰어넘는 하느님의 평화”(필리 4,7)가 당신의 것이 될 것입니다.
