No matter what our condition, there is one healing that every one of us needs. It concerns who will be lord of our lives. Many of us love God deeply, believe in Christ staunchly, and want to be filled with more of the Holy Spirit. But we still find it hard to yield our will, priorities, and desires. It's not that we need more determination to follow Jesus. We just need to be healed freed to let go of our ways and to trust in the Lord.
Some of us have a vision for our lives, along with definite assumptions about what we can do and what following Jesus will look like. But Jesus makes it clear that following him might differ radically from what we imagine. That's why he gave such a curt response to the man who offered to follow him (Luke 9:57-58). Some of our priorities are good and important, so we assume they're also Jesus' priorities. But the truth is, his priorities might be completely different, as when he told another man to let the dead bury the dead (9:59-60). And some of us respond to Jesus when we want, just as the man who asked to say goodbye first (9:61-62). But God's timing doesn't always accommodate our convenience or our procrastination.
Does that mean, then, that we are not fit to follow Jesus? Not at all! We just need to be healed. We just need to be convinced by the Spirit that our heavenly Father knows what is best, both for us and for those around us. We need to sit with him in prayer long enough for him to show us that he knows our needs and wantsand that he really does care about them. Only by spending time with the Lordin private prayer, in eucharistic adoration, at Mass, or just staring into a starry night skywill we find ourselves ready to surrender ourselves to him more fully.
God promises that as we follow his plan, he will summon things out of us, amazing things that we never knew were there: gifts, abilities, passions, and fulfillment. Jesus is not looking to disqualify anyone from following him. Rather, he wants to free us to follow him wherever he leads.
"Jesus, I want to follow you.
Heal whatever is in me that would hinder your plans and desires.
Fill me with your love today,
so that I can trust and yield to you."

각자의 처지가 어떠하든 우리 모두가 바라는 치유는 하나인데, 그것은 누가 우리 삶의 주인이 될 것인가와 관계가 있습니다. 우리 가운데 많은 이가 하느님을 깊이 사랑하고, 그리스도를 굳건히 믿으며, 성령으로 더욱 충만해지기를 원합니다. 하지만 자신의 뜻과 기득권, 욕구를 포기하기가 여전히 힘들다는 것도 알게 됩니다. 우리에게 필요한 것은 예수님을 따르려는 더 굳은 결심이 아닙니다. 우리에게는 치유, 곧 우리가 살던 방식에서 벗어나 주님을 신뢰하는 것이 필요할 뿐입니다.
어떤 사람들은 자신이 할 수 있는 일이 무엇이며 예수님을 따르는 삶이 어떤 것인지에 대해 제한적인 고정관념을 가지고 자신의 삶을 내다봅니다. 하지만 예수님께서는 그분을 따르는 삶이 우리의 짐작과는 전혀 다를 수 있음을 분명히 밝히십니다. 그 때문에 그분께서는 그분을 따르겠다고 하는 이에게 그토록 매몰차게 대답하셨던 것입니다.(루카 9,57-58) 우리는 우리에게 좋고 중요한 것들이 예수님께도 중요하다고 생각합니다. 하지만 예수님께서 죽은 이들의 장사는 죽은 이들에게 내버려 두라고 말씀하셨듯이(9,59-60), 사실 그분이 중시하는 것은 전혀 다를 수 있습니다. 또 먼저 가족에게 작별인사를 하게 해 달라고 한 사람처럼(9,61-62), 어떤 이들은 자기가 내키는 때에 예수님께 응답합니다. 그러나 하느님의 때가 우리의 형편이나 머뭇거림을 언제까지나 봐주시지는 않습니다.
그렇다면 우리는 예수님을 따르기에 합당치 않다는 말인가요? 절대 그렇지 않습니다! 우리는 단지 치유받는 것이 필요할 뿐입니다. 우리는 하늘에 계신 아버지께서 우리와 우리 이웃에게 가장 좋은 것을 알고 계심을 성령의 힘으로 굳게 믿어야 합니다. 우리는 그분께서 우리가 필요로 하고 원하는 것을 아시며 그에 대해 정말로 걱정하고 계신다는 것을 알게 될 만큼 오랫동안 그분 곁에서 기도하는 것이 필요합니다. 우리는 오로지 주님과 함께 시간을 보냄으로써-혼자 기도를 드리거나, 성체조배를 하거나, 미사 중에, 혹은 그저 별이 빛나는 밤하늘을 바라보면서-그분께 자신을 더욱 온전히 내어 드리게 될 것입니다.
하느님께서는 우리가 그분의 뜻을 따르면 우리 자신도 전혀 몰랐던 놀라운 재능과 능력, 열정, 성취를 우리 안에서 불러일으키리라고 약속하십니다. 예수님께서는 어떤 사람도 그분을 따르는 데 부적합하다고 여기지는 않습니다. 오히려 우리가 아무런 제약 없이 그분이 이끄시는 곳으로 따라갈 수 있도록 해 주고 싶어하십니다.
“예수님, 당신을 따르고 싶습니다.
제 안에서 당신의 계획과 열망에 걸림돌이 되는 것은 무엇이든 치유해 주십시오.
오늘 당신의 사랑으로 저를 채우시어,
당신을 믿고 따르게 해 주십시오.” |
