Just about everyone has heard the statement, "The devil made me do it." Perhaps we have said it ourselvesmostly in jest. However, in light of what we know about our God, how powerful he is, how infinite and omnipresent he is, this statement could not be further from the truth. Put simply, the devil is no match for almighty God. He can't "make" us do anything!
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus talks about casting out demons by the "finger of God," as if to say that it was nothing difficult at all (Luke 11:20). This is not the first time this figure of speech "finger of god" is used in Scripture. In the Book of Exodus, Pharaoh's magicians attributed the plagues that were let loose by Moses and Aaron as coming from the "finger of God" (Exodus 8:15). Later, it was said that the Ten Commandments themselves were written on stone tablets "by God's own finger" (31:38). Psalm 8 considers the whole of creation as "the work of God's fingers" (Psalm 8:4). All of these passages give us a sense of how mighty God is. They also help us see how small everything else is in comparison to him even the devil!
The devil is a created being, an angel who refused to bow to Jesus and accept God's plan for his creation. Because of his rebellion, Satan is but a twisted shadow of his former glory. All he can do is use deception to try to turn people from Jesus. Clearly, he is a force to be reckoned with, but he is not the threat that we often make him out to be. Remember, when you were baptized, you were raised up with Christ and set free from slavery to the devil. You don't have to give in to a single one of his temptations!
All you have to do is be on guard against the wiles and wicked schemes of the devil. They can sound very convincing at times, but if you stay close to Jesus, you will have nothing to fear. You may feel weak, but Jesus is strong. Just as the devil is no match for God, neither is he any match for the Spirit of God, who happens to dwell in you!

“내가 악마에 홀렸나 봐.”라는 말을 못 들어본 사람은 없을 테지요. 아마 우리 자신도 대개는 농담으로 그런 말을 해 본 적이 있을 것입니다. 하지만 우리가 하느님에 대해 알고 있는 것, 곧 그분이 얼마나 힘 있으시고 무한하시며 무소부재하신지에 비추어볼 때, 이런 말은 결코 진실이 아닙니다. 간단히 말해 악마는 전능하신 하느님의 상대가 못 됩니다. 악마는 우리를 결코 ‘홀릴’ 수 없습니다!
오늘 복음에서 예수님께서는 ‘하느님의 손가락’으로 마귀를 쫓아낸다는 말씀을 하십니다. 마치 그것이 전혀 어려운 일이 아니라는 듯이 말이지요.(루카 11,20) ‘하느님의 손가락’이라는 표현이 성경에 나타난 것이 이번이 처음은 아닙니다. 탈출기에서 파라오의 요술사들은 모세와 아론에 의해 일어난 재앙을 ‘하느님의 손가락’이 하신 일이라고 했습니다.(탈출 8,15) 그 다음에는 십계명 자체가 돌로 된 판에 ‘당신 손가락으로 쓰신’ 것이라고 나와 있으며,(31,18) 시편 8편에서는 모든 피조물을 ‘당신 손가락의 작품들’이라고 봅니다.(시편 8,4) 이 모든 글귀들은 우리에게 하느님께서 얼마나 위대하신지를 느끼게 해 줍니다. 그 글귀들은 또한 하느님에 비하면 다른 모든 것들은, 심지어 악마까지도 얼마나 보잘것없는지를 우리에게 알려 줍니다!
악마는 피조물로, 예수님을 섬기고 하느님이 당신의 창조물을 위해 마련하신 계획을 받아들이기를 거부한 천사입니다. 사탄은 반역을 했기 때문에 자신의 예전 영광의 뒤틀린 그림자에 불과합니다. 그가 할 수 있는 일이라고는 사람들을 예수님에게서 멀어지게 하려고 속임수를 쓰는 것뿐입니다. 분명히 그는 무시하지 못할 세력이지만, 우리가 종종 생각하는 것 같은 위협적인 존재는 아닙니다. 우리는 세례를 받음으로써 그리스도와 함께 높이 들어올려졌으며 악마의 예속에서 풀려났음을 잊지 마십시오. 당신은 악마의 유혹에 단 한 번이라도 넘어갈 필요가 없습니다!
당신이 해야 할 일은 악마의 농간과 사악한 간계를 경계하는 것뿐입니다. 그런 간계는 때로 아주 그럴듯하게 들릴 수도 있지만, 당신이 예수님 곁에 가까이 머문다면 두려워할 일이 없을 것입니다. 당신은 약하다고 생각할지라도 예수님께서는 강하십니다. 악마는 하느님의 적수가 되지 못하듯이 하느님의 영의 적수도 되지 못합니다. 그런데 그 영이바로 당신 안에 머무십니다!
“주 예수님, 당신의 영을 저의 마음과 생각에 심어 주십시오.
당신의 놀라운 권능이 악마의 어떤 유혹에서도 저를 보호하고 지켜 준다는 것을
제가 깨닫게 해 주십시오.
예수님, 당신의 승리에 감사드립니다!” |
