We typically think of deciding as making a choice, but the classic definition of "decide" is "to terminate by giving the victory" ― to end something by giving the victory to something else. Literally, it means to cease further debate, further consideration, or further hesitation. Now Herod was interested in Jesus. He had heard lots about him, quite possibly through Joanna (Luke 8:3). Surely, he had heard rumors of storms miraculously calmed, the sick healed, demons expelled, and the dead raised!
With all of this data, Herod clearly decided who Jesus wasn't. He wasn't John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded, or Elijah or another of the ancient prophets back from the dead. But Herod was having trouble deciding who Jesus was. He "kept trying to see him," hoping that more and more exposure would help him solve the puzzle of this popular preacher from Galilee (Luke 9:9). In effect, Herod was saying, "Prove yourself to me," even though he wasn't willing to admit the truth that all the rumors about Jesus should have led him to.
Who do you say Jesus is? Every time we recite the Creed, we profess to believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son and our Lord. Are you ready to take a stand based on that profession? Every day we face situations in which we must decide not to gossip; to avoid TV shows, movies, or Internet sites that incite greed, envy, laziness or lust; to eat and drink in moderation; to give employers a honest day's work; to keep anger in check, even when our teenager goes to school with our car keys in his pocket.
We don't want to be people who merely know about Jesus. We want to be those who have terminated doubt and wonder, who are willing to take a stand for godly things. Rather than continually asking God to prove himself and convince us, let us be those who hold fast to godly truths in our hearts and minds. And, on those days when our lives go against our profession of faith, we can declare, "Thank you, Jesus, for dying on the cross and rising from the dead for my forgiveness." So what? your decision going to be?

I believe you are the Son of God
and I want my words and actions
to declare that. Help me today
to live my faith in you."

우리는 결론짓는다고 하면 으레 선택하는 것으로 생각하기 쉽지만, ‘결론짓다’의 본래 의미는 ‘승리를 넘겨줌으로써 끝내다’, 곧 한쪽을 이기게 하여 다른 쪽을 끝내는 것입니다. 말 그대로, 더 이상의 논쟁이나 더 이상의 고민, 더 이상의 망설임이 없게 한다는 뜻입니다. 자, 헤로데 임금은 예수님께 관심이 많았습니다. 그분 이야기를 상당히 많이 전해 들었지요. 필시 요안나한테서 들었을 것입니다.(루카 8,3) 폭풍우가 기적같이 잠잠해졌다거나 병자가 나았다거나 마귀가 내쫓겼다거나 죽은 사람이 살아났다는 등의 소문이 그의 귀에도 들어갔을 게 뻔합니다!
헤로데는 이런 정보들을 종합하여 예수가 어떤 이가 아닌지를 분명히 결론지었습니다. 그는 자신이 목을 벤 세례자 요한도 아니었고, 엘리야나 그 밖의 다른 옛 예언자가 죽었다가 살아난 것도 아니었습니다. 그런데 그렇다고 해서 예수가 누구인가 결론을 내리기도 어려웠습니다. 도대체 갈릴래아에서 온 이 유명한 설교자는 누구일까, 그 궁금증을 풀 단서를 더 많이 얻을 요량으로 헤로데는 “예수님을 만나 보려고” 하였습니다.(루카 9,9) 실제로 헤로데는 “당신이 누구인지 밝히시오.”라고 말합니다. 비록 예수님을 둘러싼 무성한 소문에 자신이 이끌렸다는 사실을 인정할 마음은 없었지만 말이지요.
당신은 예수님을 누구라고 생각합니까? 신경을 외울 때마다, 우리는 하느님의 외아들이신 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는다고 고백합니다. 그 고백에서 한발도 물러서지 않을 태세가 되어 있습니까? 우리는 날마다 다음과 같이 결심해야 할 상황을 마주합니다. 남의 험담을 하지 않겠다, 탐욕이나 질투심, 나태, 정욕을 부추기는 텔레비전 쇼나 영화, 인터넷 사이트를 되도록 보지 않겠다, 과음 과식을 삼가겠다, 직원들에게 정당한 임금을 주겠다, 내 차 열쇠를 주머니에 넣고 학교에 가는 십대 자식에게 화를 참겠다, 하는 결심들 말이지요.
우리는 예수님에 대하여 그저 알기만 하는 사람이 되고 싶지 않습니다. 우리는 의심과 불안에 종지부를 찍고, 하느님의 일을 위해 기꺼이 물러서지 않는 사람이 되고자 합니다. 하느님께 끊임없이 당신을 증명해 보이고 우리가 믿게 해 달라고 조르기보다는, 우리의 가슴과 마음으로 하느님의 진리를 단단히 껴안는 사람이 됩시다. 그러면, 우리의 삶이 우리가 한 신앙고백에서 비껴갈 때마다 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “예수님, 저의 죄를 용서하시려고 십자가에서 돌아가시고 죽은 이들 가운데서 살아나시니 고맙습니다.”
그러니 당신은 무어라고 결론짓겠습니까?

“예수님,

저에게 더 이상의 확신은 필요 없습니다. 저는 예수님께서 하느님의 아들이심을 믿고 제 말과 행동으로 그것을 선포하고 싶습니다. 오늘도 주님을 믿는 삶을 살게 도와주십시오.”
