“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." Colossians 1:17)
How can Paul's words about Jesus do anything but inspire awe and wonder in our hearts? Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the firstborn of all creation. Everything in heaven and on earth was made for him. He alone is the perfect image of the invisible God, and nothing in all the universe can compare with him.
Paul didn't describe Jesus in this way to portray him as a distant, unapproachable deity who has no interest in us mere mortals. No, Paul spoke of Jesus' grandeur in order to give us a sense of security about the life we have inherited in him. If Jesus truly is the one in whom God's fullness is pleased to dwell, then without a doubt he is capable of giving us "the inheritance of the saints in light" (Colossians 1:12). As we come to know Jesus as the Son of God, we can become more confident and peaceful in every situation we face.
What do you see when you picture Jesus? Do you imagine the eternal Son of God, filled with all power and authority, making a way for you through death into life? Do you see the one through whom all things were created offering himself to the Father because of his covenant love for you? Everything holds together in Jesus, and he will not abandon you in your hour of need.
Perhaps a loved one is seriously ill or has died. Run to Jesus, knowing that he holds you and your loved one in the palm of his hand. He who is the first-born from the dead will give you the strength and peace you need. Perhaps you face a difficult relationship with a relative or coworker. Allow Jesus, through whom God has reconciled all things to himself, to guide you in repentance and reconciliation. If you feel alone or distant from God, reach out to Jesus. Remember that God has given you peace through the blood of his cross. He will answer you!

“그분께서는 만물에 앞서 계시고 만물은 그분 안에서 존속합니다.”(콜로 1,17)
사도 바오로가 예수님을 두고 한 이 말을 듣고 우리가 어찌 경외심과 경이로운 마음이 들지 않을 수 있겠습니까? 하느님의 아들, 예수 그리스도께서는 모든 피조물의 맏이이십니다. 하늘과 땅의 만물이 그분을 향하여 창조되었습니다. 그분만이 보이지 않는 하느님의 완벽한 모상이시며, 온 우주에서 그분에 비길 것은 아무것도 없습니다.
바오로는 예수님이 한낱 인간인 우리에게는 아무 관심도 없는, 저 먼 곳의 범접할 수 없는 신성한 분이심을 표현하려고 이런 식으로 설명한 것이 아닙니다. 절대 아니지요. 바오로는 우리가 주님께 물려받은 생명이 얼마나 확실하게 보장되어 있는 것인지를 깨닫게 하려고 예수님의 위엄을 이야기한 것입니다. 예수님께서 진실로 하느님의 충만하심이 기꺼이 머무르는 분이시라면, 그분이 우리에게 “성도들이 빛의 나라에서 받는 상속의 몫”(콜로 1,12)을 주실 수 있는 것이 분명하니까요. 예수님께서 하느님의 아들이심을 알게 되면 우리는 어떤 상황에서도 더욱 자신 있고 평온할 수 있습니다.
당신은 예수님 하면 어떤 생각이 떠오릅니까? 당신을 죽음에서 삶으로 이끄시고 능력과 권위가 넘치시는, 영원하신 하느님의 아들을 떠올립니까? 당신과 맺은 사랑의 약속 때문에 아버지께 자신을 바치시는, 그분을 통하여 만물이 창조된 분을 떠올립니까? 예수님께서는 그분 안에 모든 것을 품고 계시며, 당신이 곤경에 처했을 때 결코 당신을 저버리지 않으실 분입니다.
당신이 사랑하는 사람이 몹시 아프거나 혹은 죽음을 맞이하게 되었다면, 당신이나 그 사람이나 모두 예수님 손길 안에 있음을 알고 그분께 달려가십시오. 죽은 이들 가운데에서 맏이이신 그분께서 당신에게 필요한 용기와 평화를 주실 것입니다. 친척이나 동료와 불편한 관계에 놓여 있을 수도 있겠지요. 하느님께서는 예수님을 통하여 모든 것을 그분과 화해하게 만드시니, 예수님께서 당신을 회개와 화해로 인도하게 해 드리세요. 외롭다거나 하느님에게서 멀어졌다고 느낄 때면 예수님께 다가가세요. 하느님께서 십자가의 피로써 당신에게 평화를 주셨음을 잊지 마십시오. 주님은 당신에게 응답해 주실 것입니다!

당신을 찬미하여 당신 발아래 무릎 꿇는 것
