Moved by his affection for them, Paul urged the Thessalonians to hold fast to all that he had told them not only about faith in Jesus Christ, but also about how to live in a way pleasing to God (1 Thessalonians 4:1). However, since he had been forced to leave Thessalonica hastily while still in the early stages of establishing the community there (Acts 17:1-13), Paul knew that the new believersmost of whom came from a pagan backgroundlacked much basic teaching.
Though strong in their faith and love (1 Thessalonians 3:6), some of these new converts had not fully understood that the message of salvation carried with it practical implications for everyday life, including such matters as sexual conduct. So Paul reminded them of God’s design for human sexuality and exhorted them to avoid immoral behavior. God is holy, and he wants his people to be holy too!
This wasn‘t always easy. The believers in Thessalonika lived in the most cosmopolitan city in Macedonia. Every day they faced temptations against the purity and holiness God called them to (1 Thessalonians 4:7). Today we find ourselves in a similar situation. Sex outside of marriage is widely accepted. Pornography and adultery have become commonplace. Abortion as a means of contraception is gaining wider acceptance. In such an environment, we are surrounded by temptations and may find it difficult to restrain inclinations towards lustful thoughts, provocative speech, and impure behavior.
All is not lost. Almighty God has given us his Spirit to empower us against sin and safeguard our purity. And through this Spirit, our Father offers us his mercy and healing if we should fall. As we grow in our faith and love for God, we become increasingly sensitive to the movements of his Spirit within us. We learn to recognize more quickly when we have offended him and we are more eager to confess our sins and be set free. Let's remain close to the Lord so that his will for us, our sanctification, will be fully accomplished (1 Thessalonians 4:6).
"Holy Spirit, purify my heart and mind
so that I can live a life pleasing to God
in every way. Help me to turn aside
from sin and strengthen all that is good
in me. Give me grace to live in your purity now, so that I may live forever with you."

바오로 사도는 자신이 테살로니카인들에게 끼친 영향에 고무되어, 예수 그리스도에게 둔 믿음뿐만 아니라 하느님 마음에 들도록 사는 법에 관해 자신이 말한 것을 모두 굳게 지키라고 그들에게 권고했습니다.(1테살 4,1) 그런데 그는 테살로니카에 공동체를 설립하던 초창기에 그곳을 급하게 떠나야 했기 때문에(사도 17,1-13), 이교도였다가 새로 들어온 대다수 신자들이 기본적인 가르침이 많이 부족하다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.
그들의 믿음과 사랑은 굳건했지만(1테살 3,6), 새로운 개종자들 중에는 구원의 말씀이 성생활 같은 문제를 포함한 일상생활에 구체적으로 어떻게 적용되는지 온전히 이해하지 못하는 이들이 있었습니다. 그래서 바오로는 그들에게 인간의 성에 대한 하느님의 의도를 상기시키고 부도덕한 행실을 하지 않도록 권고했습니다. 하느님께서는 거룩한 분이시며, 그분의 백성도 거룩하게 살기를 바라시니까요!
그런데 거룩하게 살기가 늘 쉽지만은 않았습니다. 신자들이 살고 있던 테살로니카는 마케도니아에서 가장 국제적인 도시였던 탓에, 하느님께서 부르시는 정결하고 거룩한 삶을 살기 힘들게 만드는 유혹과 매일 마주쳤습니다.(1테살 4,7) 우리도 오늘날 비슷한 상황에 놓여 있습니다. 혼외정사가 만연하고 외설물과 불륜이 흔하게 되었습니다. 낙태가 피임 수단으로 폭넓은 지지를 얻어갑니다. 이런 환경에서 우리는 유혹에 둘러싸일 수밖에 없고, 음란한 생각이나 자극적인 말, 외설적인 행위에 휩쓸리지 않기가 얼마나 힘든지 알게 됩니다.
아직 늦지 않았습니다. 전능하신 하느님께서는 당신 성령을 주시어 우리가 죄에 대항해 싸울 힘을 주시고 우리의 정결을 지켜 주십니다. 또한 우리가 어쩔 수 없이 죄에 떨어질 때면 이 성령으로 우리에게 당신의 자비와 치유를 주십니다. 우리는 하느님께 대한 믿음과 사랑이 커가면서 우리 안에 계시는 성령의 움직임에 점점 민감해집니다. 우리는 그분의 뜻을 거슬렀을 때 그것을 더 빨리 깨닫는 법을 배우고, 우리의 죄를 고백하고 자유롭게 되기를 더욱 열망하게 됩니다. 우리 모두 주님 가까이 머물러, 우리를 거룩하게 하시겠다는 그분의 의지가 온전히 이루어지게 합시다.(1테살 4,7)
“성령님, 저의 마음과 생각을 깨끗하게 하시어 제가 모든 면에서 하느님 마음에 드는 삶을 살게 해 주시고, 또한 죄에서 돌아서서 제 안에 있는 모든 선한 것을 굳세게 하도록 도와주십시오. 이제 당신의 정결 안에 사는 은총을 주시어, 영원히 당신과 함께
살게 해 주십시오.”
