Paul's words to the Thessalonians here could appear to us as mere flattery. But that's not what they are at allhe is reassured with them because earlier he had feared they had given into persecution and fallen away from their faith (1 Timothy 3:4-5). Now that Timothy has reported how they are standing firm in the Lord, Paul is delighted with the news, and he wants to encourage them to persevere.
Even understanding that, we could still say, "Good for Paul. But what does this have to do with me?" Quite a lot, actually! Like the Thessalonians, we too have received the gift of faith. Through our baptism and confirmation, we have been given a treasure worthy of heaven, and it is up to us to persevere in the gospel we have heard. We have the same calling as the Thessalonians: to preserve this precious gift from the influences of the world, our own fallen nature, and the devil.
The best and surest way to keep our faith alive is to stay close to its source, the Lord Jesus Christ. It's very simple, really. We can always approach him not just with reverence but also to talk to him as our friend, telling him about our cares and concerns. He loves it when we give him our burdens, not so that he can commiserate with us but so that he can refresh us (Matthew 11:30). And what can be more upbuilding than reading his word, which has the power to give us his healing, conviction, and comfort?
But it's not just for our own benefit that we need to stay rooted in Christ. As we grow stronger in the Lord, his light will increase in us, and we'll become a source of encouragement to others, just as the Thessalonians were to Paul. We can't take for granted how much our faith means to those close to us. Our kind words and loving example may be exactly what they need to see them through a trial or to give them a new perspective on life. And for those who don't know the Lord, we may well be the only Bible they will read today!
"Thank you, Lord, for the gift of faith.
May I treasure it always,
but never keep it on the shelf!
Keep filling me, teaching me,
and molding me, so that I can be
an inspiration to my brothers and sisters
in Christ!"

바오로 사도가 테살로니카 사람들에게 한 이 말씀은 입에 발린 칭찬으로 들릴 수도 있습니다만, 실은 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 그가 이전에 테살로니카 사람들이 환난을 겪고 믿음에서 멀어질까 걱정을 했었기 때문에 이제는 그들에게서 격려를 받은 것입니다.(1티모 3:4-5) 그들이 주님 안에 굳건히 서 있다는 티모테오의 보고를 접한 바오로는 그 소식에 기뻐하며 그들이 믿음을 지키도록 용기를 북돋우려 합니다.
그렇다고 하더라도 우리는 여전히 이렇게 말할 수 있겠지요. “바오로 사도한테야 잘 된 일이지만 그게 나와 무슨 상관이람?” 실은 아주 상관이 많습니다! 테살로니카 사람들과 마찬가지로 우리 역시 믿음이라는 선물을 받았고, 세례성사와 견진성사로써 천국만큼 값진 보물을 받았습니다. 그리고 우리가 복음 안에 머무를지는 우리에게 달린 것입니다. 우리는 테살로니카 사람들과 똑같은 부르심을 받았습니다. 이 귀한 선물을 세상과 우리 자신의 타락한 본성과 마귀의 영향에서 보호하라는 것이지요.
우리의 믿음을 생생하게 지키는 가장 확실하고도 좋은 방법은 믿음의 원천이신 주 예수 그리스도 곁에 머무는 것입니다. 정말 아주 간단하지요. 우리는 공경하는 마음으로만이 아니라 친구에게 하듯이 근심과 걱정을 털어놓으러 그분께 언제든지 다가갈 수 있습니다. 그분은 우리를 불쌍히 여겨서가 아니라 우리를 기운 나게 하시려고 우리의 짐을 기꺼이 맡으십니다.(마태 11,30) 그러니 치유와 확신과 위안을 주는 힘을 지닌 그분의 말씀을 읽는 것보다 더 나은 것이 어디 있겠습니까?
하지만 우리가 그리스도 안에 뿌리를 내려야 하는 이유가 우리 자신만을 위해서는 아닙니다. 우리가 주님 안에서 굳세어질수록 그분의 빛이 우리 안에서 커질 테고, 그러면 우리는 다른 이들의 힘을 북돋아 주는 원동력이 될 것입니다. 테살로니카 사람들이 바오로에게 그랬듯이 말입니다. 우리와 가까운 이들에게 우리의 믿음이 얼마나 큰 의미를 갖는지 가볍게 보아서는 안 됩니다. 우리가 건네는 따뜻한 말과 사랑을 실천하는 모범적인 모습이 시련을 겪는 이들에게 꼭 필요한 것일 수도 있고 그들에게 새로운 인생관을 줄 수도 있습니다. 그리고 주님을 알지 못하는 이들에게는 우리 자신이 그들이 오늘 접할 수 있는 유일한 성경말씀이 될 수도 있습니다!
“주님, 믿음이라는 선물을 주심에
감사드립니다. 제가 그 선물을 늘 귀하게
여기되, 묻어두지 않고
적극적으로 쓰게 해 주십시오!
저를 채우고 가르치고 변화시키시어,
제가 그리스도 안에서 형제자매를
격려할 수 있게 해 주십시오!”
