What a sad but apt commentary Jesus made about the Pharisees who opposed him: "Their works are performed to be seen" (Matthew 23:5). Earlier in Matthew, Jesus warned against doing good deeds in order to win praise, because those who do so "have already received their reward" (6:1-3). By contrast, those whose deeds are hidden will gain the only reward that mattersthe approval of our heavenly Father.
This principle is wonderfully illustrated in the hidden life of Ruth, the Gentile who was King David's great-grandmother, and thus a direct ancestress of Jesus. Ruth was very loyal to her widowed mother-in-law Naomi, but she did not flaunt this virtue. To help Naomi, she did the lowly work of a poor woman, gleaning grain after the official reapers had finished.
Expecting nothing but daily sustenance, Ruth was grateful when Naomi's wealthy kinsman, Boaz, began to notice her. He explained that her generosity in leaving her homeland and caring for Naomi had caught his attention. Boazwho was destined to fulfill his own prayer by marrying Ruthprayed, "May you receive a full reward from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge" (Ruth 2:12).
So whom do I more resembleRuth or the Pharisees in today's Gospel? Am I looking to Jesus for direction? Or am I always looking over my shoulder to see what kind of impression I'm making on others, with the inevitable result that my plow veers away from the straight path set before me? Am I seeking the fleeting acceptance of human beings? Or am I content to let God reward me as he chooses?
Entrusting my life and its outcome to God is very freeing. Instead of being anxious about keeping up with fickle fashions, I can let the Master clothe me in the garment most suited to the work he's assigned to me. Sometimes he will even give me gracious glimpses of the fruit borne through my obedience.
Paul once told the Christians in Colossae: "If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.… When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory." (Colossians 3:1,4). May this become our motto as well.
"Lord, my true life is hidden with you.
Teach me to be concerned with
pleasing you above all else!"

예수님께서 당신께 맞선 바리사이들을 두고서 “그들이 하는 일이란 모두 다른 사람들에게 보이기 위한 것이다.”(마태 23,5)라고 하신 말씀은 안타깝지만 꼭 맞는 표현입니다. 마태오 복음의 앞선 내용에서도 예수님께서는 칭찬을 받으려고 선행하는 것에 대하여 경고하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 그런 사람들은 “자기들이 받을 상을 이미 받았기”(6,1-3) 때문입니다. 이와 반대로, 남모르게 자선을 베푼 이들은 오직 하나의 중요한 상, 즉 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지의 인정을 받게 될 것입니다.
이런 원리는 창세기에 나오는 다윗 임금의 증조모이며 따라서 예수님의 직계 조상이 되는 이방인 룻의 드러나지 않은 삶에 아주 잘 나타나 있습니다. 룻은 홀로 된 시어머니 나오미를 아주 극진하게 모시면서도 이를 자랑하지 않았습니다. 나오미를 부양하고자 그녀는 수확꾼들이 추수를 끝낸 뒤에 떨어진 이삭을 줍는, 가난한 여자들이나 하는 천한 일을 하였습니다.
그저 날마다 먹을 양식을 구할 수 있다는 기대 하나로, 룻은 나오미의 부자 친척인 보아즈가 자신을 눈여겨보게 되었을 때 이를 감사히 생각했습니다. 보아즈는 고향을 떠나와 시어머니를 돌보는 자애로운 마음을 보고 그녀에게 관심을 갖게 되었다고 말하였지요. 보아즈는 “네가 이스라엘의 하느님이신 주님의 날개 아래로 피신하려고 왔으니, 주님께서 너에게 충만히 보상해 주시기를 빈다.”(룻 2,12)라고 기도하였는데, 이 기도는 그 자신이 룻과 결혼함으로써 운명적으로 이루어지게 됩니다.
그런데 나는 룻을 닮았습니까? 아니면 오늘 복음에 나오는 바리사이를 닮았습니까? 예수님만을 똑바로 바라보고 있습니까? 아니면 늘 어깨 너머로 다른 사람들한테 내가 어떻게 보일지 신경 쓰느라고 눈앞에 놓인 곧은길을 두고 엉뚱한 데서 헛수고하는 당연한 결과를 내고 있습니까? 사람이 주는 덧없는 칭찬을 바랍니까? 아니면 하느님께서 고르신 대로 주실 상에 만족합니까?
나의 삶과 그 결실을 하느님께 맡기는 것은 아주 자유로워지는 일입니다. 언제나 변하는 유행을 따르려고 안달하기보다는, 주님께서 내게 맡기신 일에 가장 잘 맞는 옷을 주님께서 손수 입혀 주십사 할 수 있습니다. 그분은 때로 그분께 순종하여 얻은 열매를 살짝 볼 수 있는 은총을 주시기도 할 것입니다.
바오로 사도는 콜로새 신자들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그러므로 여러분은 그리스도와 함께 다시 살아났으니, 저 위에 있는 것을 추구하십시오. 거기에는 그리스도께서 하느님의 오른쪽에 앉아 계십니다. … 여러분의 생명이신 그리스도께서 나타나실 때, 여러분도 그분과 함께 영광 속에 나타날 것입니다.”(콜로 3,1.4) 우리 역시 이 말씀을 좌우명으로 삼으면서 살기를 빕니다.
“주님, 저의 진정한 삶은 주님만이 아십니다. 다른 무엇보다도 주님을 기쁘게 하는 일에 전념하도록 저를 가르쳐 주십시오!” |
