Have you ever noticed how the world tries to convince us that nothing is ever good enough? If we're unhappy at work, we should just leave and get another job. Even if we like our jobs, we should still be searching for better opportunities. If we're having problems with our marriage, we should simply call it a loss and go look for another spouse­or a life partner. The problem with this approach is that we will never find contentment. What we're really looking for is something that can't be found on earth ­ perfection.
Mary certainly didn't find perfection. She had to endure her neighbors' suspicions when she became pregnant, and had to give birth to her child in a stable. She and Joseph certainly weren't the wealthiest couple in Nazareth, and life must have been a challenge after Joseph died. Yet from her words, we can see that Mary was as grateful as any human being ever has been. That's because her gratitude was for the awesome work that God would accomplish through her. By simply saying "yes" to God's plan, she could participate in the salvation of the entire human race!
We can achieve much in this life, and of course, God wants us to aim high. But like Mary, we also have to recognize when God has given us something great, and thank him for it. As Paul said: "What do you have that you did not receive?"  (1 Corinthians 4:7). The most precious of God's gifts, and the one that is nothing but pure gift, is eternal life. At least once a day, we should stop and think about the fact that Jesus died for each of us so that we could live with him forever.
Today, try to make Mary's words your own: "My spirit rejoices in God my savior." If you are angry at someone, or if you are unhappy with your situation, or if someone has hurt you recently, believe that Jesus is still with you, offering you divine wisdom­and even more importantly, offering you a place in his eternal kingdom. Ask him to give you his perspective on your situation ­ it is sure to be a hopeful one! 



"Lord, I put aside my worries,
and I rejoice in you! Help me to thank you for your greatness,

and to praise and adore you for all that you have done for me."

이 세상이 우리로 하여금 어떤 것에도 만족하지 못하도록 얼마나 우리를 구슬려 대는지 당신은 생각해 본 적이 있습니까? 만약에 지금 다니고 있는 직장이 만족스럽지 않으면 그저 그만두고 다른 직장을 구해야 합니다. 직장이 맘에 들더라도 더 나은 기회가 없는지 계속 찾아보아야 합니다. 결혼 생활에 문제가 생기면 단순히 실패로 치부하고 다른 배우자나 인생 동반자를 찾아 나섭니다. 그런데 늘 이런 식으로 접근하는 방식은 어디서도 만족을 찾지 못한다는 허점을 안고 있습니다. 우리가 정말로 찾고 있는 것은 이 세상에서는 얻을 수 없는 무엇, 곧 완전함입니다. 
분명히 성모님도 완전함을 얻지는 못했습니다. 임신을 하자 이웃들의 의심을 견뎌내야 했고 마구간에서 아기를 낳아야 했으니까요. 마리아와 요셉이 나자렛에서 제일 잘 살던 축은 분명히 아니었을 테니 요셉이 세상을 떠나자 마리아는 생활고를 겪어야 했겠지요. 그럼에도 우리는 마리아가 한 말씀에서 그가 세상 그 누구보다 감사 속에 사는 분이었음을 알 수 있습니다. 그것은 마리아가 자신을 통해 완성될 하느님의 놀라운 업적에 대해 감사를 드렸기 때문입니다. 하느님의 계획에 순순히 “예”라고 대답함으로써 마리아는 인류 전체의 구원에 동참할 수 있었습니다! 
우리는 현세의 삶을 통해 많은 것을 성취할 수 있고, 물론 하느님께서도 우리가 큰 뜻을 품기를 바라십니다. 그러나 또한 마리아처럼 하느님께서 우리에게 굉장한 것을 주셨을 때 그것을 알아보고 감사드릴 수 있어야 합니다. 바오로 성인이 말씀하셨듯이 “그대가 가진 것 가운데 받지 않은 것이 어디 있습니까?”(1코린 4,7) 하느님께서 주신 선물 가운데 가장 귀중한 것, 그야말로 가장 고결한 선물은 영원한 생명입니다. 우리는 적어도 하루에 한 번쯤은 잠시 발걸음을 멈추고 우리가 주님과 더불어 영원한 생명을 누리게 하시려고 예수님께서 우리 각자를 위해 돌아가셨음을 묵상해야 할 것입니다.
오늘, “내 영혼이 나를 구원하신 하느님 안에 기뻐합니다.”라는 마리아의 말씀을 당신의 말씀으로 삼아 보세요. 당신이 누군가에게 화가 나 있거나, 현재 상황에 만족하지 못하거나, 근래에 어떤 사람이 당신에게 상처를 주었다면, 예수님께서 여전히 당신 곁에 계시면서 당신에게 하느님의 지혜를 주신다는 것을 믿으십시오. 더 중요한 것은, 그분의 영원한 나라에 당신의 자리를 마련해 두고 계심을 믿는 것입니다. 당신이 처한 상황을 그분의 눈으로 보게 해 주십사 청하세요. 분명히 희망적으로 보일 것입니다!

주님 안에 기뻐합니다!
주님의 위대하심에 감사드리고
주님께서 저에게 하신 모든 일을 찬송하고
기뻐하게 도와주십시오.”
