"You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."(Matthew 16:16)
Finally, Peter recognized who Jesus is, and proclaimed him before all the other apostles. You can almost imagine Jesus crying out, "By Jove, I think he's got it!" Peter finally grasped the stupendous fact that Jesus was not just a prophet or a wonder-worker but the anointed Messiah of God. And he didn't come to this knowledge on his own. It came by listening to the Father's voice.
However, the fact that Peter had received a magnificent revelation about Jesus did not mean he understood everything about Jesus' mission. Only a short time later, Jesus put this "Rock" of the church in the same league with Satan! Peter couldn't grasp that the Messiah had to suffer and die like a common criminal. And, despite his having just proclaimed Jesus as the chosen one on a special mission from God, he couldn't accept Jesus' words about the way the Messiah was going to complete his mission.
We should all be able to identify with Peter's split personality. After all, we have the same kind of conflict within ourselves. We may know the truth about who God is and how we should live, but our words and actions don't always correspond to itnot to mention our fundamental philosophy of life!
The good news is that like Peter, we too are on a learning curve. If we keep trying to live by his inspiration, the Holy Spirit can gradually transform us. If we make it a practice to examine our consciences and repent for our sins, we will find ourselves more apt to fight temptationand we will grow closer to the Lord.
1 Peter, written decades after Peter's youthful mistake, is proof that God is capable of transforming us. In this letter, Peter not only speaks of "the sufferings destined for Christ,"(1 Peter 1:11); he also tells his readers to rejoice to the extent that they share in these sufferings (4:13). This is the same Peter who said Jesus shouldn't suffer the same Peter who was afraid to come to him on the water, and who denied him three times. If he could change this dramatically, we should expect no less for ourselves!

of your Holy Spirit, and may I grow more like you every day."

“스승님은 살아 계신 하느님의 아드님 그리스도이십니다.”(마태 16,16)
마침내 베드로 사도가 예수님이 누구신지를 깨닫고 다른 사도들 앞에서 고백했습니다. 당신은 “저런, 드디어 알아들었군!” 하며 외치시는 예수님의 모습이 눈에 선할 것입니다. 베드로는 마침내 예수님께서 단순히 예언자나 기적을 행하는 분이 아니라 하느님의 기름부음 받은 메시아라는 엄청난 사실을 터득했습니다. 스스로 깨우친 것이 아니라 하느님 아버지의 목소리에 귀 기울임으로써 알게 된 것이지요.
하지만 베드로가 예수님이 누구신지에 대해 탁월한 계시를 받았다 하여 그분의 사명에 관한 것도 전부 알아들은 것은 아니었습니다. 얼마 가지 않아 예수님께서는 교회의 ‘반석’이라 불렀던 베드로를 사탄과 한패라고 호되게 질책하셨지요! 베드로는 구세주라는 분이 여느 죄수들처럼 고통을 당하고 죽어야 한다는 것을 납득할 수 없었습니다. 베드로는 예수님을 하느님께서 특별한 사명을 위해 선택하신 분이라고 선포하였지만, 그 사명을 완수하는 방법에 관해 예수님께서 말씀하신 바는 도저히 받아들이지 못했습니다.
베드로의 이런 이중성에 누구나 공감할 수 있을 것입니다. 결국 우리도 자신 안에 베드로와 같은 갈등을 지니고 있으니까요. 우리도 하느님이 누구신지, 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는지 알고는 있지만, 기본적인 인생철학은 고사하고 우리의 말과 행동 역시 언제나 거기에 부합하는 것은 아닙니다!
기쁜 소식은 우리도 베드로처럼 배우는 과정에 있는 사람들이라는 것이지요. 우리가 성령의 이끄심대로 살고자 꾸준히 노력한다면, 성령께서 우리를 차츰 변화시켜 주실 것입니다. 수시로 양심을 성찰하고 죄를 뉘우친다면, 우리는 유혹과 맞서 더 잘 싸울 수 있게 되고 나아가 주님께 더 가까이 다가가게 될 것입니다.
베드로 사도가 젊은 시절에 몇몇 잘못을 범하고 나서 수십 년이 지나 기록한 그의 첫째 서간을 보면, 하느님께서는 우리를 변화시키실 수 있음이 입증됩니다. 이 서간에서 베드로는 “그리스도께 닥칠 고난”(1베드 1,11)에 관해 설교할 뿐 아니라, 신자들에게 그들 역시 그리스도의 고난에 동참하는 것을 기뻐하라고(4,13) 격려합니다. 이런 말을 한 베드로는 예수님의 수난은 불가하다고 주장하고, 물 위를 걸어 주님께 가는 것을 무서워하고, 주님을 모른다고 세 번씩이나 부인한 바로 그 베드로였습니다. 그런 그가 이토록 철저히 변화할 수 있었으니 우리에게도 그에 못지않은 변화를 기대해야 하겠지요!
