Consider the fish in Jesus' parable. They are of many different types, but they all have one thing in common: They will all be caught in the fishermen's net, and then sorted through to be branded good or bad. That sounds a lot like the way God works, doesn't it? He calls us, his fishermen, to fill his nets by bringing into the kingdom everyone we canno questions asked, no judgments rendered. Then, at the final judgment, he will sort through them himself and decide who is worthy of his kingdom.
If we want to have the right attitude for evangelization, we need to take on Jesus' perspective. He had an extraordinary love for everyone he spoke to, and his one desire was for them to come to his Father through repentance and faith. He was interested in their sin only because it kept them from God. He didn't come into the world, after all, to condemn people; he came to save them (John 3:17). Likewise, our evangelization should always be focused on the promise of salvation, not on the sins people commit. While we should never downplay God's judgment, the most fruitful seeds we can plant are those of his mercy.
It is important to remember that looking inside a person's soul is not a job for amateurs! How many people who had been away from God for years, or who had never known him, were converted because someone risked stepping outside their comfortable circle of acquaintances to talk to him or her! Both the impressive and the wounded are longing for Christ, and Jesus longs for them even more.
The truth is, as we get past the hurdle of judging people, evangelization becomes a lot less scaryand even fun! Just think of the wide variety of "fish" in the world, each one of them a mystery to us, but each made in the image of God. We have no way of knowing which one of them will respond to our witness, but we know that only a few kind words, or a simple prayer, could introduce them to the astonishing love of Christ. The harvest is plenty; may we all respond with the love of Christ!

예수님의 비유에 나오는 물고기들을 생각해 보세요. 그 물고기들은 저마다 종류는 다르지만 한 가지 공통점이 있습니다. 그 공통점이란 어느 것이나 어부의 그물에 걸려들어 좋은 것과 나쁜 것으로 나뉜다는 것입니다. 꼭 하느님께서 일하시는 방식 같지 않나요? 그분께서는 당신의 어부들인 우리를 부르시어 데려올 수 있는 사람은 누구건 가리지 말고 - 어떤 질문이나 판단도 하지 말고 - 모두 하느님 나라로 데려와 당신의 그물을 채우라고 하십니다. 그러면 마지막 심판 날에 하느님께서 그들을 손수 가려내시어 당신 나라에 합당한 이들이 누구인지 결정하실 것입니다.
우리가 복음화에 있어서 올바른 태도를 취하려면 이 같은 예수님의 시각을 가져야 합니다. 예수님께서는 당신이 말씀을 전하는 사람들을 모두 각별히 사랑하셨으며, 그분의 유일한 소망은 당신 말씀을 듣는 이들이 모두 뉘우침과 믿음으로 하느님 아버지께 나아가는 것이었습니다. 주님께서 그들의 죄에 관심을 두신 것은 그들이 죄 때문에 하느님에게서 멀어졌기 때문이지요. 그분께서는 결국 사람들을 단죄하기 위해 세상에 오신 것이 아니라, 죄에서 구원하기 위해 오셨습니다.(요한 3,17) 이와 마찬가지로, 우리의 복음화도 언제나 사람들의 죄가 아니라 구원의 약속에 초점을 두어야 합니다. 하느님의 심판을 가벼이 여겨서도 안 되겠지만, 우리가 심을 수 있는 가장 풍성한 씨앗은 하느님의 자비입니다.
한 영혼의 내면을 들여다보는 것은 초보자가 할 수 있는 일이 아님을 기억해 두는 것도 중요합니다! 자신이 안주하고 있던 생활반경을 벗어나 과감하게 이웃에게 복음을 전한 누군가로 말미암아, 여러 해 동안 하느님을 잊고 살았거나 하느님을 전혀 알지 못했던 사람들 가운데 얼마나 많은 이들이 하느님께 돌아오거나, 그분을 처음으로 알게 되었을까요! 감동받은 이들이나 상처받은 이들 모두가 그리스도를 갈망하고 있으며, 예수님께서는 이보다 훨씬 더 그들을 갈망하고 계십니다.
사실, 비판하는 사람들 때문에 겪는 장애를 극복하고 나면 복음화에 대한 두려움이 가시고 즐겁기까지 할 것입니다! 세상 온갖 종류의 ‘고기들’을 떠올려 보세요. 우리에게는 그 하나하나가 모두 신비롭지만 저마다 하느님의 모습으로 만들어졌습니다. 그 물고기 가운데 어느 고기가 우리의 증언에 응답할지는 알 수 없지만, 그들에게 건네는 몇 마디의 친절한 말이, 그들을 위한 짧은 기도가 그들을 그리스도의 크신 사랑으로 인도할 수 있다는 것을 우리는 압니다. 수확할 것이 많습니다. 우리 모두 그리스도의 사랑으로 응답합시다!
“성령님, 당신 없이 저는 아무것도 아닙니다. 당신 권능으로 저를 가득 채워 주시고
아버지의 마음을 저에게 주시어,
당신을 알아야 할 사람들을 위해
일하게 해 주십시오!”
