“When Aaron, then, and the other children of Israel saw Moses and noticed how radiant the skin of his face had become, they were afraid to come near him.”(Exodus 34:30)
What's so frightening about a radiant face? Nothing, unless you understood why Moses' face was glowing: He had seen the glory of God, something so awesome that no human being could behold it and survive (Exodus 33:20; Isaiah 6:5). The Israelites were afraid that looking at Moses' radiance would have the same effect as looking at God himself. The mere thought was inconceivable!
How blessed we are! In Jesus, God has made himself visible and approachable! Simply by becoming flesh, Jesus has made it possible for us to look upon God and live. Not only can we see the face of God as we gaze at Jesus, but such loving adoration has the power to transform us.
This is what prayer is all aboutcoming face-to-face with Jesus. It is about coming to know God intimately by spending time with him in praise, adoration, thanks-giving, and quiet listening. It's about meeting the one who is our creator, redeemer, counselor, and friend. It's about coming in touch with our lover, who calls out to us: "Let me see you, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet and you are lovely"(Song of Songs 2:14).
Do you want to know the best part about gazing on the face of Jesus? Just as it happened to Moses, it will happen to us: We will begin to radiate his goodness to those around us. Prayer really can change our lives. It can turn us into loving apostles; it can make us holy! As Paul wrote: "All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image, from glory to glory" (2 Corinthians 3:18). Can any promise be more inspiring than that?

“아론과 이스라엘의 모든 자손이 모세를 보니, 그 얼굴의 살갗이 빛나고 있었다. 그래서 그들은 그에게 가까이 가기를 두려워하였다.”(탈출 34,30)
모세의 얼굴이 빛나는 게 뭐 그리 두려운 일일까요? 그의 얼굴이 왜 빛나는지를 깨닫지 못했다면 두려울 건 아무것도 없었겠지요. 모세는 하느님의 영광을 보았는데, 하느님의 영광이란 어찌나 두렵고 놀라운 것인지 인간이라면 누구도 그것을 보고는 살아남을 수 없는 일이었습니다.(탈출 33,20; 이사 6,5) 그러니 모세의 얼굴에서 빛나는 광채를 보는 사람들에게도 하느님을 직접 보았을 때와 같은 무서운 일이 일어나리라고 이스라엘 백성들은 두려워했던 것입니다. 어쩌면 그토록 단순하게 생각할 수 있었을까요!
우리는 얼마나 복 받았습니까! 하느님께서 예수님을 통해 우리에게 당신을 보여 주시고 당신께 다가갈 수 있게 해 주셨으니 말입니다! 예수님께서는 바로 사람이 되심으로써 우리가 하느님을 뵙고도 살 수 있게 해 주셨습니다. 우리는 예수님을 바라봄으로써 하느님의 모습을 뵐 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 그러한 사랑에 찬 흠숭에는 우리를 변화시키는 힘이 있습니다.
기도는 바로 이런 것입니다. 예수님과 얼굴을 맞대고 바라보게 되는 것이며, 찬미와 흠숭, 감사의 마음으로 주님의 목소리에 조용히 귀 기울이는 시간을 가짐으로써 하느님을 친밀히 알게 되는 것입니다. 기도는, 우리의 창조주시며 구속자, 우리의 조언자시며 벗이신 분과 만나는 것입니다. 기도는 “그대의 모습을 보게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리를 듣게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리는 달콤하고 그대의 모습은 어여쁘다오.”(아가 2,14)라면서 우리를 부르시는 사랑하는 분과의 교제입니다.
예수님의 얼굴을 바라볼 때 생기는 가장 좋은 일이 뭔지 알고 싶으세요? 바로 모세에게 일어난 것과 같은 일이 우리에게도 일어난다는 것입니다. 그래서 우리는 주위 사람들에게 그분의 선하심을 비추기 시작할 것입니다. 기도는 진정 우리의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있습니다. 기도는 우리를 사랑 넘치는 사도로 만들어 주고 우리를 거룩하게 합니다! 바오로 사도는 코린토 신자들에게 이렇게 썼지요. “우리는 모두 너울을 벗은 얼굴로 주님의 영광을 거울로 보듯 어렴풋이 바라보면서, 더욱더 영광스럽게 그분과 같은 모습으로 바뀌어 갑니다. 이는 영이신 주님께서 이루시는 일입니다.”(2코린 3,18) 이보다 더 고무적인 약속이 또 있을까요?
“예수님, 제가 하느님의 얼굴을 뵈오며
살아갈 수 있게 해 주심에 감사드립니다!
성령님, 오늘 하느님의 거룩하신 모습을
바라보는 저를 그분과 더욱 가까운 친교를
맺게 이끌어 주십시오.”
