"Ask. Seek. Knock."(Luke 11:9)
Every person has his or her limits. Even us with our own children, whom we love with all our hearts, we have only so much patience. Sometimes we just plain get worn out and can lose our cool with them.
Isn't it amazing, then, to hear Jesus say that our heavenly Father has unlimited patience? Isn't it astounding that Jesus tells us to go ahead and wear him out with our prayer requests?
Despite these assurances of God's patience, we can still find it hard to keep on asking, seeking, and knocking on heaven's door. We still love God and trust him, but a sense of fate or just plain common sense tend to gain the upper hand over simple faith in the God of the impossible. We get worn out quickly, or we lose our focus. Perhaps we spend a day or two on a petition, but we are nothing like the persistent neighbor with his nighttime request.
Brothers and sisters, God wants us to bombard him with our petitions every day. He assures us that we cannot overdo it. Part of the solution to problems like abortion, war, illness, broken families, and grinding poverty is constant, persistent, unrelenting prayer. Our Father wants to give us good gifts. He wants to help us with our problems. So be persistent. Go to him every day and ask and ask and ask. Never stop asking. Never give up. Never lose hope.
"I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.… When I cried out you answered; you strengthened my spirit"(Psalm 138:1-3). So prayed the psalmist in today' readings. Surely we too can cry out to heaven with patience and persistence. Surely we too can keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Why? Because "the Lord is on high, but cares for the lowly." That's each one of us. He will never leave us wanting!
"Father, we come to you and ask you
to heal our wounded, suffering world.
Pour out divine grace from your throne,
Father, and renew the face of the earth.
We will never stop praising you
for we know that you are faithful to the end."

“청하여라, 찾아라, 문을 두드려라.”(루카 11,9)
사람은 누구나 한계를 가지고 있습니다. 우리가 그토록 사랑하는 우리 자식들한테도 참고 견디는 데는 한계가 있는 법입니다. 정말로 너무나 지쳐서 자식들을 향해 흥분을 참지 못할 때가 종종 있습니다.
그런데 하늘에 계신 아버지께서는 끝없이 참으신다는 예수님 말씀을 들으니 놀랍지 않습니까? 예수님께서는 우리더러 어서 청원 기도로 아버지께 조르라고 말씀하시니 정말 대단하지 않습니까?
하느님의 인내는 한도 끝도 없다고 다짐해 주시는 소리를 듣고도, 우리는 꾸준히 하느님께 청하고 찾고 그 문을 두드리기를 여전히 어려워합니다. 우리는 변함없이 하느님을 사랑하고 믿지만, 운명이라는 생각이나 그저 보통의 상식으로 하느님께는 불가능이 없다는 단순한 믿음을 눌러 버리고 맙니다. 우리는 쉽게 지치거나 집중하지 못합니다. 어쩌면 하루나 이틀 정도는 간청을 하겠지만, 밤 시간에 끈질기게 졸라대는 이웃에 대면 어림도 없지요.
형제자매 여러분, 하느님께서는 우리가 날마다 올리는 간청으로 당신을 못살게 굴기를 바라십니다. 아무리 해도 지나치지 않다고 주님께서는 다짐하십니다. 낙태, 전쟁, 질병, 가정 파괴, 뼈아픈 가난과 같은 문제를 해결하는 한 방법은 변함없이 꾸준하고 끈질기게 기도를 드리는 것입니다. 우리 아버지께서는 우리에게 좋은 선물을 주고 싶어하십니다. 그분께서는 우리를 도와 어려움을 해결해 주고 싶어하십니다. 그러니 꾸준하십시오. 날마다 주님을 찾아가 청하고 청하고 또 청하십시오. 쉬지 말고 청하십시오. 포기하지 마십시오. 결코 희망을 잃지 마십시오.
“제 마음 다하여 당신을 찬송합니다. … 제가 부르짖던 날 제게 응답하시고, 제 영혼에 힘이 솟았습니다.”(시편 138,1-3) 오늘 독서에서 시편 작가는 그렇게 기도하였습니다. 분명히 우리도 끈기 있고 끈질기게 하늘에 부르짖을 수 있습니다. 분명히 우리도 계속해서 청하고, 구하고, 두드릴 수 있습니다. 왜냐구요? “주님께서는 높으셔도 비천한 이를 굽어보시기” 때문입니다. 그것은 바로 우리 자신입니다. 하느님께서는 우리를 곤경에 빠진 채 버려두지 않으십니다!
“아버지, 저희는 상처입고 고통받는 세상을 고쳐 주십사고 청하러 왔습니다.
아버지의 옥좌에서 거룩하신 은총을
부어 주시고, 세상의 얼굴을 새롭게 하여 주십시오. 하느님께서는 끝까지 약속을
지키시는 줄을 알기에
끊임없이 주님을 찬양하렵니다.”
