Picture these awesome scenes before your mind's eye: Moses begins the ceremony to seal God's covenant with the Israelites by declaring "all the words of the Lord" to the multitude encamped at the foot of Mount Sinai. Then, "with one voice" the people respond, affirming their faith in God and their obedience to him. Next, Moses pours some of the blood of the sacrificial oxen onto the altar as an offering to the Lord and sprinkles the rest on the people. Finally, he and the elders eat a holy meal before God on the holy mountain.
Do you see how closely this sequence of events parallels the central actions that take place at every Mass: the reading of the word of God, our profession of faith, the offertory and consecration, and finally communion?
The covenant that God made on Mount Sinai was sealed with the blood of animals ­blood that symbolized the life of those who offered it. And with it, the Israelites were sealed in their determination to carry out what they had heard and professed. Moreover, Moses' declaration­"This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you" (Exodus 24:8)­foreshadowed Jesus' own words at the Last Supper, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins"(Matthew 26:28).
The new covenant­the covenant of our redemption in Christ­has been sealed by Jesus' own blood. This blood is pure, spiritual, living, and eternal. It carries the very force and power of uncreated, divine life. While the blood of sacrificial bulls sealed the Israelites in their decision to obey the law, Jesus' blood is poured out to impart divine power and seal us for all eternity. One sacrifice made the people ritually clean, the other makes us all interiorly pure and holy. How awesome it is that we have been redeemed by Christ's precious and imperishable blood (1 Peter 1:18-19)! Now, every time we receive the body and blood of Christ, we receive God's own power to live out the gospel that has been proclaimed and the creed that we profess! May we never lose our sense of awe at the blood that was shed for us­the very blood that is offered to us at Mass!

이 경외스러운 장면을 눈앞에 그려 보십시오. 모세는 “하느님의 모든 말씀”을 시나이 산기슭에 모인 군중에게 선포함으로써 하느님과 이스라엘 백성 사이에 계약을 맺는 의식을 시작합니다. 이에 백성들은 “한목소리로” 하느님을 믿고 따르기로 맹세합니다. 그러자 모세는 희생 제물인 소의 피를 주님께 바치며 제단에 뿌리고 나머지는 백성들에게 뿌립니다. 끝으로 그와 원로들은 거룩한 산 위의 하느님 앞에서 성찬을 듭니다.
이 의식의 순서가 미사 예식의 주요한 절차들, 즉 하느님의 말씀을 읽고, 신앙을 고백하고, 봉헌하고, 축성하며, 끝으로 성체를 모시는 것과 아주 비슷하다는 것을 알아보겠습니까?
하느님께서 시나이 산에서 맺은 계약은 짐승의 피로 보증되었습니다. 피는 그것을 바친 이들의 생명을 상징합니다. 그리고 이스라엘 백성들은 자신들이 듣고 고백한 것을 실천하겠다는 결심을 그 피로 확인하였습니다. 나아가 모세가 “이는 주님께서 이 모든 말씀대로 너희와 맺으신 계약의 피다.”(탈출 24,8)라고 선포한 것은 예수님께서 최후의 만찬 때 “이는 죄를 용서해 주려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 내 계약의 피”(마태 26,28)라고 하신 말씀을 예시한 것이었습니다.
새로운 계약, 곧 그리스도 안에서 우리가 구원받는 새 계약은 예수님 자신의 피로 맺어졌습니다. 그 피는 깨끗하고 영적이며 살아 있고 영원합니다. 그 피는 창조되지 않은 분, 거룩하신 생명의 힘과 능력을 가지고 있습니다. 제물로 바쳐진 소의 피가 계명을 따르기로 한 이스라엘 백성들의 결심을 확인하여 준다면, 예수님의 피는 거룩하신 힘을 전하여 주고 우리를 영원과 맺기 위하여 흘려졌습니다. 희생 제물의 피가 제의식상으로 사람들을 깨끗하게 한다면, 예수님의 희생은 우리 모두를 내면적으로 깨끗하고 거룩하게 합니다. 우리가 고귀하고 사라지지 않을 그리스도의 피로 죄에서 해방되었다는 것(1베드 1,18-19)은 얼마나 놀랍습니까! 이제 우리는 그리스도의 몸과 피를 받아 모실 때마다, 선포된 복음과 우리가 고백하는 신경을 실천할 수 있도록 하느님의 능력을 받아 모시는 것입니다! 우리를 위하여 흘리신 피, 미사 때마다 우리에게 주시는 바로 그 피를 경외하는 마음을 우리 모두 잃지 않기를 빕니다!
