There is no doubt that the Law given to Moses was from God and that it is something holy. The Ten Commandments list the main things that the Israelites­and for that matter, we too­must do in order to remain in God's presence.
God desires however, that we do more than just stay out of trouble or do the right things. He wants us to flourish. He wants to change the interior state of our souls by pouring divine love into us so we can become more and more like him. He wants to empower us to bear abundant fruit and do great things in his name.
The commandments can set boundaries for us, but they don't necessarily describe the way to deeper holiness or to greater usefulness in the kingdom. The law can give us knowledge of what is good, but it cannot give us the strength to do the good. It can bring to light the areas in our lives where we are at odds with the Lord, but it is not capable on its own of granting us the power to change. For that, we need the Holy Spirit. The law was given to help us dispose ourselves to the One whose divine power can bring about all these changes.
Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, the preacher to the papal household, once gave an example of how love and grace fulfill the law. He told the story of a pregnant woman who was told by her physician exactly what rules to follow during her pregnancy­what she should do and what she shouldn't so that she could have a healthy baby. He told her what to eat, how much rest to get, and what exercises would help her. The woman was so taken by the miracle of new life growing within her that she lovingly observed all the rules until her new baby was born.
That's how we should see the commandments: Simply as the means to a far greater end. If we keep them, we will be that much more open to the Holy Spirit, as he brings Christ to birth in our lives!

모세가 받은 율법은 하느님께서 주신 것이고 따라서 거룩한 것이라는 점은  의심할 바 없습니다. 십계명에는 이스라엘 자손뿐만 아니라 우리도 역시 하느님의 현존 안에 머물려면 행해야 할 중요한 것들이 열거되어 있습니다.
그러나 하느님께서는 우리가 단순히 문제를 일으키지 않거나 올바른 일만 하는 게 아니라, 그 이상의 것을 하기를 바라십니다. 즉 우리가 뛰어난 사람이 되기를 원하십니다. 하느님께서는 우리에게 하느님의 사랑을 쏟아 주심으로써 우리 영혼의 내면에 변화를 일으키시어 우리가 점점 더 그분을 닮아가기를 원하십니다. 또한 우리에게 힘을 주시어 우리가 주님의 이름으로 풍성한 열매를 맺고 큰일들을 해내기를 원하십니다.
십계명은 우리에게 한계선을 그어 줄 수는 있지만, 그렇다고 해서 반드시 하늘 나라에서 우리가 더욱더 거룩해지거나 더욱더 쓸모 있게 되는 방법을 보여 주는 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 십계명으로 무엇이 옳은지 알 수는 있지만, 그 옳은 일을 할 수 있는 힘을 얻지는 못합니다. 그것은 우리가 살아가면서 주님과 불화를 겪는 부분을 비출 수는 있지만, 그 자체로는 우리에게 변화할 수 있는 힘을 주지 못합니다. 그런 힘을 얻으려면 우리에게 성령이 필요합니다. 계명을 우리에게 주신 것은, 거룩하신 힘으로 이 모든 변화를 가져오실 수 있는 분 앞에 우리 자신을 내어 놓을 준비를 할 수 있게 하려는 것입니다.
교황궁내원 강론자 라니에로 칸탈라메사 신부는 십계명이 얼마나 사랑과 자비로 가득 차 있는가를 예를 들어 설명한 적이 있습니다. 그는 한 의사가 임산부에게 건강한 아기를 낳기 위하여 임신 중에 꼭 해야 할 일과 해서는 안 될 일들을 일러 준 이야기를 하였습니다. 의사는 그녀에게 무엇을 먹고, 얼마나 자야 하는지, 어떤 운동을 해야 좋을지를 말해 주었습니다. 그녀는 자기 안에 새로운 생명이 자라고 있다는 경이로움에 빠져서 아기를 낳을 때까지 기쁜 마음으로 모든 규칙을 지켰습니다.
우리는 십계명을 그렇게 보아야 합니다. 그저 훨씬 더 큰 목적을 이루기 위한 수단으로 말이지요. 우리가 십계명을 지킨다면, 성령께서 우리의 삶에 그리스도를 모셔올 때 우리는 그만큼 더 많이 열려 있을 것입니다!
