There are a lot of ways to look at Jesus' parable about yeast. If we do some creative thinking, we can see the wheat as standing for the Eucharist, the living bread we receive at every Mass. After all, the Mass is what unites us to Christ and gives us a share in his kingdom. But if that is true, how should we see the yeast? The Eucharist is made from unleavened bread, like the ancient Passover bread. And Paul tells us that we are to get rid of the "old yeast" of sin, and become "a new batch, without yeast," purified by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 5:7).

Here, as in other parables, Jesus uses a symbol to turn our understanding upside down. The yeast Jesus is talking about is invisible: It is our faith, because only faith can bring the kingdom to life. It is the "leaven" of faith that lets Jesus, present in the Eucharist, rise up in us and do his work in the world.

Without faith, the transformation of the bread and wine, miraculous though it is, will have little effect on us. However, to be obedient, we don't need a great amount of faith­just real faith. Simply to believe that Jesus is truly present for us in the Mass, and to trust that he will give us his love and mercy is enough to start with. But if we take him seriously we can expect amazing things. Like the woman who used only a little yeast to leaven a whole batch of flour, our little, but sincere, faith can make a big difference.

Jesus wants his love to grow in us. If we give our hearts to him at Mass, we will be blessed, and in turn, we will bless those around us. We will see miracles in our lives, because the God of miracles will be with us. So let's come to the Lord with expectant faith, for he is the most generous of fathers. Jesus told St. Faustina that those who "trust boundlessly" in him would receive all of his grace: "I rejoice that they ask for much, because it is my desire to give much, very much."

"Lord, today I put my trust in your promises. Take my heart and transform it with your love. Use my gifts to build your kingdom."

예수님께서 누룩을 가지고 하신 비유를 해석하는 방법은 아주 많습니다. 우리가 좀 독창적으로 생각해 보면, 밀을 우리가 미사 때마다 받아 모시는 살아 있는 빵, 성체라고 볼 수 있습니다. 결국, 미사는 우리를 그리스도와 하나가 되게 하고 하느님 나라에 참여케 하는 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리는 누룩을 무엇이라고 생각해야 할까요? 성체는 구약의 과월절 빵처럼 누룩 없이 구워진 빵입니다. 그리고 바오로 사도는 우리에게 죄의 “묵은 누룩”을 치우고, 성령으로 깨끗해진 “누룩 없는 새 빵”이 되어야 한다고 말합니다.(1코린 5,7)

다른 비유들과 마찬가지로, 여기에서도 예수님께서는 우리의 생각을 뒤집는 상징을 사용하십니다. 예수님께서 말씀하시는 누룩은 눈에 보이는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 우리의 믿음입니다. 오직 믿음만이 하느님 나라에 생명을 불어넣을 수 있기 때문입니다. 예수님, 곧 성체 안에 현존하시는 분을 우리 안에서 살려내어 세상에서 당신의 일을 하시게 하는 것은 믿음이라는 ‘효모’입니다.

빵과 포도주의 성변화(聖變化)는 비록 기적적인 일이기는 해도, 믿음이 없다면 우리에게 거의 영향을 미치지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 하느님께 순종하는 데에 어마어마한 믿음이 필요한 것은 아닙니다. 그저 진정한 믿음이면 됩니다. 단지 예수님께서 미사 중에 우리에게 참으로 현존하심을 믿고 그분께서 우리에게 사랑과 자비를 주시리라는 것을 믿으면, 그것으로도 충분히 시작할 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 주님을 진정으로 받아들인다면 우리는 놀라운 일들을 기대해도 됩니다. 적은 누룩으로 밀가루 반죽 전체를 부풀리는 여인처럼 우리의 작지만 진실한 믿음은 큰 변화를 일으킬 수 있습니다.

예수님께서는 당신의 사랑이 우리 안에서 자라나기를 바라십니다. 미사 때 우리의 마음을 주님께 바치면 주님은 우리에게 복을 주시고, 다음에는 우리가 주위 사람들을 축복할 것입니다. 기적의 하느님께서 우리와 함께 계실 것이므로, 우리는 살아가면서 기적을 체험할 것입니다. 그러므로 기대에 찬 믿음을 가지고 주님께로 오십시오. 주님께서는 가장 너그러우신 아버지이시니까요. 예수님께서는 파우스티나 성녀에게 당신을 “끝없이 믿는” 사람들은 당신이 주시는 모든 은총을 받을 것이라고 하시면서, 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 사람들이 내게 많은 것을 청할 때에 기쁨을 느낀다. 왜냐하면 나는 많이, 아주 많이 주고 싶기 때문이다.”

 “주님, 이제 저는 주님의 약속을 믿습니다. 제 마음을 가져가 주님의 사랑으로 변화시켜 주십시오. 저의 재능을 주님의 왕국을 세우는 데에 써 주십시오.”
