This reading forms a long prelude to the actual commandments God gave to his people to guide their actions. Underlying the list of do's and don'ts is a revelation about the nature of God himself and the relationship he longs to have with his beloved people. The God who spends time with Moses "face to face, as one man speaks to another"(Exodus 33:11) reveals himself as "merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing his kindness for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin" (34:6-7).
We sometimes focus on the particulars of the law, becoming anxious about God's exact will for us, about what we may and may not do. The result, as described in today's Gospel reading, is that in our zeal to get rid of every trace of sin in our lives, we may unwittingly uproot God's life in us before it has become firmly established. For example, we may be so worried about not being lazy that we're always in frantic motion, with no time for reflection and recreation. We don't want to be fickle, so we may stick to an ill-advised commitment that no longer fits into our life. We are so afraid of losing our temper that we put up with a situation we could change for the better.

Instead of concentrating on meticulously following all of God's requirements, let's follow Moses' example and hasten to meet the Lord "outside the camp," at the foot of the cross. Let's grow in friendship with him and let him develop and nurture his life in us. Let's experience his love poured out on us and on all humanity. Let's touch his mercy and forgiveness so that he can equip and empower us to manifest that mercy in the world he loves so much. As we grow in divine grace and kindness, in union with him, we will find ourselves fulfilling the law that expresses his very nature.

"O Lord, you are merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in kindness. As the heavens tower over the earth, so your love towers over your faithful. As far as the east is from the west, so far have you removed our sins from us.  As a father has compassion on his children so you, Lord, have compassion on us."

오늘 독서는, 하느님께서 당신 백성에게 계명이 적힌 돌판을 주시며 행동의 지침으로 삼도록 하신 일에 대한 긴 서곡입니다. 해야 할 것과 하지 말아야 할 것을 적은 목록의 저변에는 하느님의 본성과 그분이 당신의 사랑하는 백성들과 맺고 싶어하시는 관계에 대한 계시가 깔려 있습니다.“마치 사람이 자기 친구에게 말하듯, 얼굴을 마주하고”(탈출 33,11) 모세와 함께 시간을 보내신 하느님께서는 당신 자신을 “자비하고 너그러우며, 분노에 더디고 자애와 진실이 충만하며, 천대에 이르기까지 자애를 베풀고 죄악과 악행과 잘못을 용서”(34,6-7)하는 분이라고 밝히십니다.
우리는 가끔 계명 하나하나에 신경을 쓰며, 하느님께서 우리에게 무엇은 하고 무엇은 하지 말라고 하셨을 때 그 정확한 의도는 무엇이었을까 초조해합니다. 그 결과, 오늘의 복음 말씀에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼, 사는 동안에 생긴 모든 죄의 흔적을 지우기에 급급해서 하느님의 생명이 우리 안에 굳게 자리 잡기도 전에 모르는 사이에 그 뿌리를 뽑아버리는 것입니다. 예를 들어, 게으름 피우지 않으려고 노심초사한 나머지, 지난날을 돌아보거나 여가를 즐길 틈도 없이 늘 정신없이 살아갑니다. 또는 경솔하게 어떤 일에 투신했다가 더 이상 그런 삶을 살 수 없는데도 변심하지 않으려고 계속 매달리기도 합니다. 화를 내게 될 것이 두려워서 호전시킬 수 있는 상황을 꾹 참고 지내기도 합니다.
하느님의 계명을 전부 다 따르려고 지나치게 세심하게 신경 쓰기보다는, 모세의 본을 따라 “천막 밖에서”, 십자가 아래에서 주님을 만나도록 서둘러야 합니다. 주님과의 친교를 북돋우고, 주님의 생명이 우리 안에서 자라나고 살지게 합시다. 주님께서 우리에게, 그리고 온 인류에게 쏟아 주시는 사랑을 체험해 봅시다. 주님께서 우리를 갖추어 주시고 우리에게 힘을 주시어 주님께서 그토록 사랑하시는 세상에 우리가 그분의 자비를 드러낼 수 있도록 주님의 자비와 용서를 느껴봅시다. 우리가 주님과 하나 되어 그분의 은총과 자애 안에서 성장할 때, 우리 자신이 주님의 본성 그 자체를 나타내는 계명을 충실히 지키고 있음을 발견하게 될 것입니다.


“오 주님, 주님께서는 자비하고 너그러우며, 분노에 더디고 자애가 충만하십니다.
하늘이 땅 위에 높이 솟아 있듯이, 주님의 사랑은 믿는 이들 위에 우뚝합니다. 주님께서는 동쪽 끝에서 서쪽 끝만큼이나 우리를 자신의 죄에서 멀어지게 하셨습니다. 

아버지가 자식들을 불쌍히 여기듯이, 주님 당신께서도 저희를 불쌍히 여기십니다.”
