"He's just a carpenter." "We know his family, there's nothing special about him!"
In today's gospel reading, we see Jesus returning to a cold reception in his hometown after having preached to large, enthusiastic crowds. Despite all he had done elsewhere, no one in Nazareth hailed him as King or Messiah. Instead, they seem to have paid him little heed at all. He was able to perform a few miracles, but no one believed that he was a prophet, much less the Son of God.
Why such a lack of faith? Because the Nazarenes chose their own grasp of Jesus rather than letting his words and actions spur them to seek God's revelation .
What about us? We know that Jesus is the Son of God. We believe it; we profess it every week at Mass. And yet how often do we treat Jesus as just a well-intentioned carpenter? Do we come to prayer each morning expecting to be lifted up to heaven and touch the very heart and mind of God? Do we go to Mass expecting his glory to be revealed in us through the Eucharist? The hard truth is that we cannot trust our own abilities to bring about the kind of faith that transforms our lives. We simply must rely on God to give us divine revelation by his Holy Spirit.

The good news is that when we do look to the Holy Spirit, we find that he really does want to reveal his Son to us. He really does want to change our hearts, piercing them with the love of Christ in a way that transforms us into his image. As we come to learn who Jesus is, like Peter we will be led to proclaim: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Like Thomas, we will bow before him in awe and cry out: "My Lord and my God." And like John we will come face-to-face with the life-changing reality that God is love. The more Jesus reveals himself to us, the more we can begin to grasp "what is the breadth and length and height and depth" of the Lord we follow (Ephesians 3:18). Nothing compares to knowing Jesus. The revelation of his love and power is worth striving for!

“저 사람은 목수가 아닌가.” “우리가 저 사람의 가족을 알고 있지 않은가. 무슨 신통한 일이 있겠나!”
우리는 오늘의 복음 독서에서, 열광하는 수많은 군중에게 복음을 선포하셨던 예수님께서 당신 고향 사람들에게 냉대 받으시는 모습을 봅니다. 다른 곳에서 훌륭한 일을 많이 하셨지만 나자렛에서는 그분을 왕이나 메시아로 반기는 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 환영은 고사하고 예수님께 조금치의 관심도 보이지 않았지요. 주님께서는 몇 가지 기적을 행하실 수 있었지만, 그분을 예언자로 믿는 사람은 아무도 없었을 뿐더러 하느님의 아들로 믿는 사람은 더더욱 없었습니다.
왜 그렇게 믿음이 부족했을까요? 나자렛 사람들은 예수님의 말씀과 행적에 고무되어 하느님의 계시를 찾으려 하기보다 예수님에 대해 자신들이 알고 있던 바를 좇았기 때문입니다.
우리는 어떤가요? 우리는 예수님께서 하느님의 아들이심을 알고 있습니다. 우리는 그 진리를 받아들이고 주일 미사 때마다 고백합니다. 하지만 우리는 얼마나 자주 예수님을 그저 선의를 지닌 한 사람의 목수로 치부하나요? 우리는 매일 아침 하늘 나라로 들어 올려져 하느님의 마음 한가운데에 닿으리라 기대하면서 기도에 임합니까? 우리는 성체성사를 통해 우리 안에서 주님의 영광이 드러나기를 기대하면서 미사에 갑니까? 자신의 삶을 변화시킬 만한 믿음을 우리 스스로 이끌어 낼 수 있음을 자신이 선뜻 믿지 못한다는 것은 참으로 냉엄한 사실입니다. 우리는 하느님께서 성령을 통해 하늘 나라를 우리에게 드러내보여 주신다는 것을 전혀 의심 없이 믿어야 합니다.  
기쁜 소식은, 우리가 성령께 의지할 때 하느님께서 진정으로 당신 아드님을 우리에게 드러내 보여 주고 싶어하신다는 것입니다. 성령께서는 우리를 그리스도의 모습으로 변화시킬 수 있는 사랑으로 우리 마음속을 꿰뚫고 들어와 송두리째 바꾸어 주고 싶어하십니다. 우리는 예수님께서 어떤 분인지 알게 될 때에 베드로처럼 고백하게 될 것입니다. “주님은 그리스도이시며 살아 계시는 하느님의 아들이십니다.” 우리는 토마스처럼 주님을 경외하며 그 앞에 머리 숙여 “저의 주님, 저의 하느님”이라고 외칠 것입니다. 그리고 요한처럼 하느님은 사랑이시라는, 우리의 삶을 송두리째 변화시키는 엄연한 현실과 마주할 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 당신 자신을 드러내실수록 우리는 우리가 따르는 주님의 “너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이”(에페 3,18)를 깨닫기 시작할 것입니다. 이 세상 그 무엇도 예수님을 알게 되는 것에 견줄 수 없습니다. 그분의 사랑과 능력이 드러나게 하려는 노력은 참으로 보람 있는 일입니다!

더욱 깊이 제게 주님 모습을 드러내보여
주시기 청하옵니다.”
