Herod felt trapped. What could he do but hand over John the Baptist for execution? After all, he had made a vow to his step-daughter in front of so many people. Essentially, he had two choices: Do what is right and spare John's life, or maintain his image as supreme ruler and allow John to die. Herod looked at his guests and listened to fear and pride rather than to the voice of his conscience.
Maybe we don't see ourselves even remotely like Herod. But we, too, face many choices each day, and in ways both big and small, we must decide whether we will stand for what is right or allow ourselves to be ruled by other people's opinions. If we allow fear for our reputation to win out, we risk missing opportunities for God to use us to bring his life and truth to the people around us. By contrast, if we try our best to stand up for what is just, we reflect the integrity of the children of God, and we testify to the power of the gospel.
How can we possibly go against the tide of public opinion and expectations? By believing that God makes all things possible, that's how! By his Holy Spirit, we can receive the supernatural strength we need to maintain our integrity even in the face of strong opposition. God doesn't expect us simply to find the strength within ourselves to speak up for justice's sake or to uphold what is right. Every day, he offers us his Holy Spirit, who can deepen our convictions and give us the humility and courage we need to stand our ground.
Have you found yourself in the midst of gossip? Are questionable practices occurring at work? Perhaps longstanding resentments are darkening family relationships. No matter where we look, we find people who are quick to share their opinions. Be like them­only with the gentleness and firm conviction of Christ! Take a stand. Show those around you that you carry the weight of your own convictions. Who knows? Maybe some of them will even begin to listen as you tell them about Jesus.

"Lord, your ways are truth and life.
Send your Spirit to write your commands
on my heart. Give me the strength
to stand firm in the truth.
Teach me not to compromise,
regardless of the opposition I face."

헤로데 임금은 덫에 걸린 느낌이었지요. 이제 세례자 요한을 처형시키도록 넘기는 것 말고 다른 수가 있겠습니까? 아무튼 그는 많은 손님들 앞에서 헤로디아의 딸에게 맹세를 했으니까요. 그는 기본적으로 둘 중 하나를 선택해야 했습니다. 즉 옳은 일을 택해 요한의 생명을 구해 주느냐? 아니면 최고 통치자의 체면을 지키기 위해 요한을 죽게 놔두느냐? 헤로데는 손님들의 얼굴을 보며 양심의 소리보다는 두려움과 자만심의 소리에 귀를 기울였습니다.
우리 자신은 헤로데와 조금도 비슷하지 않다고 생각하겠지요. 그러나 우리 역시 날마다 수없이 많은 크고 작은 선택을 하게 되며, 정의의 편에 설 것인지 아니면 타인들의 의견에 좌우될 것인지 결정해야 합니다. 우리가 체면에 급급하여 옳은 일 하기를 두려워한다면, 하느님께서 우리를 통해 당신 생명과 진리를 주위에 전하실 기회를 놓칠 수도 있습니다. 반대로, 정의의 편에 서고자 최선을 다할 때 우리는 하느님의 자녀 된 고결함을 드러내고 복음의 힘을 증언합니다. 

우리는 어떻게 하면 대중의 여론과 기대라는 흐름을 거스를 수 있을까요? 하느님께는 무슨 일이든 가능함을 믿음으로써 할 수 있습니다! 우리는 그분의 성령을 통해, 세상의 그 어떤 반대 앞에서도 우리의 고결함을 지켜내는 데 필요한 초자연적 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 정의를 위해 외치거나 옳은 것을 지켜 낼 힘을 그저 우리 자신 안에서 찾기를 기대하시는 게 아닙니다. 그분은 우리의 입장을 견지하는 데 필요한 겸손과 용기를 주고 우리의 신념을 심화시킬 수 있는 성령을 날마다 우리에게 보내 주십니다.


당신은 험담에 말려든 적이 있습니까? 직장에서 미심쩍은 문제들이 발생합니까? 어쩌면 해묵은 원한이 가족들 사이에 먹구름을 드리우고 있을 수 있겠지요. 어디를 보든 자기 의견을 시원시원하게 나누는 사람들을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 당신도 그들처럼 하세요. 다만 그리스도의 온유함과 확고한 신념을 가지고서요! 당신의 입장을 취하세요. 당신이 자신의 신념을 중요하게 여긴다는 것을 주위 사람들에게 보여 주세요. 누가 압니까? 그들  가운데 누군가는 예수님에 대해 말하는 당신의 이야기에 귀를 기울이기 시작할지도 모릅니다.

“주님, 주님의 길은 진리요 생명입니다.
성령을 보내시어 제 가슴에 주님의 계명을
새겨 주십시오. 저에게 진리 안에 굳건히 설 힘을 주십시오. 저에게 가르침을 주시어 그 어떤 반대에 부딪히더라도 불의와 타협하지 않게 해 주십시오."
