How does the kingdom of God grow? Through ambassadors of Christ, believers who have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Through people like St. Lawrence, who are made capable of loving and serving Jesus to limitless degrees!
Think of the saints and martyrs who were the catalysts for the early church. They were so in love with Jesus and so eager to build his kingdom that they gladly gave up their lives for that goal. Lawrence himself was no exception. When arrested by Roman agents in a.d. 254 because of his faith, he proclaimed simply: "God do I worship, him alone do I serve and I do not fear your torturing." It has been said that Lawrence's death led to the conversion of many Roman citizens and helped pave the way for the empire to embrace Christianity rather than try to destroy it.
A similar thing could be said about St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit missionary to Colombia in the early 1600's. Calling himself a "Slave of the Negroes", he dedicated his life to the slaves brought in to the port city of Cartagena. It is estimated that he baptized about 300,000 people during his forty-four years of ministry, and despite fierce opposition, did everything he could to defend them, educate them, and seek their liberation.
But it's not just the heroic saints and martyrs who build the church. Parents can also become moving ambassadors of Christ simply by virtue of the lives they lead. Every meal fixed, every load of laundry done out of love, every paycheck earned, every lawn mowed, every soccer game attended, every prayer uttered, every moment of teaching and discipline offered out of love for Jesus will bear abundant fruit.
The truth is, we can all become God's ambassadors, prophetic voices in this world. With the love of God poured into our hearts and the work of his Holy Spirit to help us put sin to death, we can bring the vitality and the power of the kingdom of God to everyone we meet. So go ahead and take a risk! Preach the gospel. Be the face of Christ to someone in need. Show the world that the Christian life really is the most fulfilling way to live!

하느님 나라는 어떻게 성장할까요? 하느님 나라는 성령의 능력으로 변화된 신자들인 그리스도의 사절을 통해서, 예수님을 끝없이 사랑하고 섬긴 라우렌시오 성인과 같은 사람들을 통해서 성장합니다!
초대 교회의 발전에 이바지한 성인과 순교자들을 머리에 떠올려 보세요. 예수님을 참으로 사랑하여 주님 나라 건설에 열성적이었던 그들은 그 목적을 이루고자 기꺼이 자신들의 목숨을 바쳤습니다. 라우렌시오 성인도 예외가 아니었지요. 기원후 254년에 하느님께 대한 믿음 때문에 로마 군사들에게 체포되었을 때 그는 오직 이렇게 선포했습니다. “나는 하느님만을 예배하고 하느님만을 섬기며 당신들의 고문을 두려워하지 않는다.” 전하는 말에 의하면 라우렌시오의 순교로 많은 로마 시민이 회심하였고, 로마 제국은 그리스도교를 말살하려 하기보다 국교로 받아들이게 되었다고 합니다.
우리는 1600년대 초 콜롬비아의 예수회 선교사였던 베드로 클라베르 성인을 두고도 같은 말을 할 수 있을 것입니다. 성인은 자신을 ‘흑인들의 노예’라고 칭하며 카르타헤나 항구 도시에 끌려온 노예들을 위해 일생을 바쳤습니다. 44년간의 선교 활동을 통해 그가 세례성사를 준 사람은 무려 30만 명에 이르는 것으로 추정됩니다. 격심한 반대에 부딪히면서도 그는 노예들을 보호하고 교육하며 그들에게 자유를 되찾아 주고자, 할 수 있는 일이라면 무엇이든 다 했습니다.
그러나 교회를 건설하는 사람은 영웅적 성인이나 순교자들만이 아닙니다. 부모들 역시 자신들의 삶에서 보이는 덕행으로 감화를 주는 그리스도의 사절이 될 수 있습니다. 사랑으로 밥을 짓고 빨래를 하고 돈을 벌고 잔디를 깎고 축구 경기를 하고 기도를 하며, 주님을 향한 사랑으로 자녀들을 가르치고 훈육한 시간들은 풍성한 열매를 맺을 것입니다.
사실, 우리 모두는 이 세상에서 그리스도의 사절이 되고 예언자의 목소리가 될 수 있습니다. 우리 마음속에 쏟아 부어진 하느님의 사랑과 우리가 죄를 말살시키도록 도와주시는 성령의 역사하심 덕분에 우리는 만나는 모든 사람에게 하느님 나라의 생명력과 권능을 전할 수 있습니다. 그러니 되든 안 되든 한 번 해 보세요! 복음을 전하십시오. 곤경에 처한 사람에게 그리스도의 모습이 되십시오. 그리스도인의 삶이야말로 가장 보람찬 인생임을 온 세상에 보이십시오!
“예수님, 변화시키는 성령의 힘에 제가 열려 있게 도와주십시오. 저는 세상에 나아가, 영원히 지속되는 열매, 주님 나라를 건설하는 열매를 맺고 싶습니다.”
