Peter was a "take charge" kind of fellow. Jesus must have recognized that quality when he first saw him in his fishing boat on the edge of the sea. More than once, Jesus even congratulates him for this characteristic, prophesying a leading role for Peter. He tells the fisherman that he will become a fisher of men, and he even calls Peter the "rock" on which he will build his church. However, it took many lessons from Jesus for Peter to be able to fulfill these roles and achieve the potential that Jesus saw in him.
In today's Gospel, we see Peter wanting to take charge again. Seeing the glory of God come upon Jesus, as well as Moses and Elijah standing with him, Peter immediately proposed building some kind of shrine to memorialize this amazing event. Instead of standing in awe of what is before his eyesinstead of prostrating himself before these holy men, Peter wanted to take action. But, knowing Peter's tendencies, the Father told him exactly what he needed to hear: "This is my chosen Son; listen to him" (Luke 9:35).
"Listen to him." This is a word we all need to hear. If we want to serve Jesus as his disciples on this earth, we need to spend time listening to him and getting direction and guidance from him. All action and no reflection is far from the most effective way to build the kingdom of God!
Remember the story of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42)? Martha was busy working, while Mary sat at Jesus' feet listening to his teaching. Of course, Martha did good things, but Mary chose the better part.
We can learn from these stories and make sure we are spending enough time with Jesus, adoring him, praying, reading his word. As we do, we will begin to detect the difference between a "Good" idea and an inspired one that comes from the Holy Spirit. Jesus wants to lead us in all our endeavors, and if we stay in touch with him, he will make us into his own instruments, no matter what we are doing.
"Jesus, I want to sit at your feet today.
Even when I am busy with the tasks of daily life, I want to hold you close in my heart and listen to your voice.
I love you my Jesus, my Savior
and Lord."

베드로 사도는 어디서건 ‘책임을 지러 나서는’ 부류의 사람이었습니다. 예수님께서는 호숫가 고기잡이배에서 베드로를 처음 만나셨을 때 그 자질을 알아보셨겠지요. 심지어 여러 번 장차 그에게 주어질 지도자의 역할을 예언하시면서 그의 그런 자질을 칭찬하셨습니다. 주님께서는 그에게 사람 낚는 어부가 될 것이라고 하시고, 나아가 당신이 장차 그 위에 교회를 세우게 될 ‘반석’이라고 칭하십니다. 그러나 베드로 사도가 그러한 역할들을 수행하고 예수님께서 알아보신 잠재력을 성취할 수 있게 되기까지는 예수님으로부터 많은 가르침을 받아야 했습니다.
오늘 복음에서 우리는 책임을 맡고 싶어하는 베드로의 모습을 다시금 봅니다. 그는 예수님과 그 곁에 서 있는 모세와 엘리야 위에 하느님의 영광이 임하시는 것을 보고서는 지체 없이 그 놀라운 사건을 기념할 경당을 짓자고 제안합니다. 그는 눈앞에서 벌어지는 광경에 넋을 잃고 서 있기보다는, 혹은 그 거룩하신 분들 앞에 엎드려 있기보다는 당장 행동을 취하고 싶어했습니다. 그러나 베드로의 성격을 잘 아시는 하느님 아버지께서는 그에게 꼭 필요한 말씀을 들려주셨지요. “이는 내가 선택한 아들이니 그의 말을 들어라.”(루카 9,35)
“그의 말을 들어라.” 이것은 우리 모두한테 꼭 필요한 말씀입니다. 우리가 이 세상에서 예수님의 제자로서 그분을 섬기고 싶다면 그분의 말씀을 듣고 그분의 지도와 이끄심을 받는 데에 시간을 들여야 합니다. 영적인 숙고 없이 활동만 한다면 결코 하느님 나라를 건설하는 가장 효과적인 방법이 될 수 없습니다!
마리아와 마르타의 이야기를 기억하나요?(루카 10,38-42) 마르타는 시중드느라 바빴지만, 마리아는 조용히 예수님 발치에 앉아 그분의 가르침을 들었습니다. 물론 마르타도 좋은 일을 했지만, 마리아가 더 좋은 몫을 택한 것이지요.
우리는 이 일화들에서 교훈을 얻어, 예수님을 찬미하고 기도하며 그분 말씀을 읽으면서 반드시 그분과 함께 충분한 시간을 보내도록 해야 하겠습니다. 그렇게 할 때, 우리는 그저 ‘좋은 생각’과 성령에서 오는 영감 사이의 미묘한 차이를 감지하기 시작할 것입니다. 예수님께서는 온갖 노력을 경주하는 우리를 이끌어 주고자 하시며, 우리가 당신 손길에 머무는 한 우리가 무엇을 하든 당신 도구로 써 주실 것입니다.
“예수님, 저는 오늘 주님 발치에 앉아 있고
싶습니다. 일상의 일들로 바쁠 때에도
주님을 제 마음 가까이 모시고
주님의 목소리를 듣고 싶습니다.
저의 구세주, 저의 주님이신 예수님,
저는 당신을 사랑합니다.”
