"It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the servant like his master."(Matthew 10:25)
Looking at the miraculous displays of power and wisdom, compassion and sacrifice that seemed constantly to flow from Jesus, it is natural to think that becoming like Jesus means we have to become holier, wiser, calmer; more loving, powerful, understanding; indifferent to popular opinion, impervious to insult, and resistant to offense. Those are good qualities, but they aren't what Jesus cites first in the context of becoming like him. At the heart of all of this is Jesus' absolute assurance of his Father's love.
This is key. If we want to manifest any of the qualities we see in Jesus, we need to be grounded and secure in the knowledge of God's love. We need to learn to trust that he will never forget about us, never stop caring for us. God's love for us remains constant, even in those moments when we feel abandoned, vulnerable, full of doubt, or even persecuted for our belief in the gospel. We are all precious in his sight, valuable to him not for what we can do but simply for who we are: his children, created in love, redeemed in love, sustained in love, and destined for love.
Though it may sound far too exalted for any of us to hope for, the truth is that this knowledge of God's love is not beyond our reach. Why? Because God delights in pouring his love into us. He is a very generous God, eager to shower us with his grace and revelation. We so often have an image of God as a stern judge waiting for us to fulfill some strict set of requirements before he will give us just an inkling of his grace.
Don't you believe it! God's love is available to anyone who opens his or her heart in prayer. His love permeates every word of Scripture and beckons us every moment of every day. This weekend, take God at his word. Try resting quietly with him in prayer, asking him to assure you of his immense love for you. Then you will become more and more like Jesus, your Teacher.

예수님으로부터 끝없이 흘러나오는 능력과 지혜, 연민과 희생이 기적처럼 펼쳐지는 것을 보면서 우리는 자연히 이런 생각이 들겠지요. 예수님처럼 된다는 것은 우리가 더욱더 거룩하고 지혜롭고 온화해지며, 더 많은 사랑과 능력과 이해심에 넘치고, 여론에 흔들리지 않으며, 모욕에 초연하고, 비난에도 꿋꿋한 사람이 되어야 함을 의미한다고요. 모두 훌륭한 자질이지요. 그렇지만 예수님께서 우리더러 당신을 닮으라고 말씀하실 때 우선으로 꼽는 것은 그런 자질이 아닙니다. 그 모든 것의 중심에는 하느님 아버지의 사랑에 대한 예수님의 절대적 확신이 있습니다.
이것이 바로 해답입니다. 예수님께서 지니신 덕목을 우리도 나타내고 싶다면, 하느님의 사랑을 확고히 깨닫고 그 깨달음에 뿌리박아야 한다는 것입니다. 우리는 하느님께서 우리를 결코 버리지 않으시며 언제까지나 돌보시리라고 믿는 법을 터득해야 합니다. 우리가 버림받고 상처받고 의심으로 가득하며, 심지어는 복음을 믿는다는 이유로 박해받는다고 느낄 때에도 우리에게 품으신 하느님의 사랑은 결코 변함이 없습니다. 우리 각자는 그분 보시기에 더없이 소중하고 값진 존재입니다. 그것은 우리의 능력 때문이 아니라 다만 우리의 존재적 이유 때문으로, 곧 우리가 그분의 자녀들이고, 사랑으로 창조되었으며, 사랑으로 구원받았고, 사랑으로 길러지며, 사랑을 하도록 운명지어졌기 때문입니다.
우리가 감히 소망하기엔 이 말이 너무나 숭고하게 들릴지 몰라도, 하느님의 사랑을 깨닫는 것이 우리의 능력을 넘어서는 일이 아니라는 것은 확실합니다. 왜냐구요? 하느님께서는 당신 사랑을 우리에게 쏟는 일을 무척 즐겨하시기 때문입니다. 그분은 당신 은총과 계시의 비를 우리에게 흠뻑 내려 주기를 열망하시는 매우 너그러운 분이십니다. 우리가 흔히 생각하는 하느님의 모습이란 일련의 엄격한 요구 조건을 다 채워야 은총이라 할 만한 것을 조금 내려 주는 준엄한 심판자일 수 있습니다.
그렇게 생각하지 마세요! 하느님의 사랑은 기도 중에 생각과 마음을 여는 모든 사람에게 쏟아집니다. 그분의 사랑은 성경 말씀 한 마디 한 마디에 스며들어 있고, 매일 매순간 손짓하며 우리를 부르고 있습니다. 이번 주일에는 말씀 속에서 하느님을 만나십시오. 기도 중에 주님 곁에 편히 쉬면서 그분의 끝없는 사랑을 확실히 느끼게 해 달라고 청하십시오. 그러면 당신은 스승이신 예수님을 점점 더 닮아갈 것입니다.
“아버지, 오늘 저를 당신 곁에서
조용히 쉬게 하시고, 당신 사랑으로
가득 채워 주십시오. 아버지의 사랑을
더욱 깊이 알아 제가 만나는 모든 사람에게 그 사랑을 전하고 싶습니다.” |
