Imagine if one of these tax collectors had another chance to talk with Jesus after he had miraculously paid the temple tax. He might have said something like this: "You're paying the tax because you don't want to offend anyone? But you've already offended lots of people! You and your disciples picked grain on the Sabbath, you healed a man on the Sabbath, and you claimed to have forgiven a man's sins! Why be so careful about observing this law?"
To explain himself, Jesus might just have given him the first commandment: "Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself." Even though paying the tax seems like pretty cautious behavior for a radical who was turning all of Jerusalem upside down, it's just demonstrating again that whatever Jesus does, he does out of love.
Jesus probably hoped that this tax collector would realize that there is nothing wrong ­ and everything right ­ with doing good on the Sabbath, and especially with freeing a man from his sins. On the other hand, he might also have seen that for Jesus not to pay the temple tax would be against everything that he stood for. He came as one of us. He came to go through everything we do: pain, suffering, even taxes!
The fact that the Son of God would obtain a coin to pay a religious tax should teach us to be a little more humble ourselves. Like his companion Peter, we are full citizens of God's kingdom. We have amazing privileges as his sons and daughters. We can experience freedom, healing, and deliverance, and we can look forward to an eternity of joy with our Lord.
But, we're also human! While we are living in this world, we must respect and love those who don't know Jesus, as well as those who act contrary to his commandments. In all that we do, we should show neither arrogance nor carelessness. On the contrary, we should "shine like stars … in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation" (Philippians 2:15). It's our humility and obedience, as much as our willingness to witness our faith directly, that will bring Christ to others.

meekness, that I may truly be
a witness of your love!"

예수님께서 기적을 행하여 성전 세를 내신 뒤에 세리 가운데 한 사람이 주님과 다시 한 번 이야기할 기회를 가졌다고 상상해 보세요. 어쩌면 주님께 이런 말을 했을지 모릅니다. “당신은 사람들 비위를 상하지 않게 하려고 세금을 내나 본데, 이미 많은 사람들 심기를 건드렸소! 안식일인데도 당신과 당신 제자들은 밀 이삭을 뜯은 적이 있고 병자를 치료해 주기도 했소. 게다가 당신은 어떤 사람의 죄를 용서하였다고 주장하였소! 그런데 어쩐 일로 이 법은 그리 철저하게 지키려는 거요?”
예수님께서는 당신 입장을 설명하고자 그에게 첫째 계명을 들려주셨을 것입니다. “온 마음으로 하느님을 사랑하고 네 이웃을 사랑하여라.” 온 예루살렘을 뒤흔들어 놓은 혁명가 치고는 성전 세 바치는 태도가 매우 조심스러워 보였다면, 이는 바로 예수님께서는 무슨 일이나 사랑에서 하신다는 것을 다시 한 번 확인시켜 준 것입니다.
예수님께서는 안식일에 좋은 일을 하는 것이, 더군다나 사람을 죄에서 구원하는 일이 전혀 잘못이 아님을, 아니 오히려 지극히 정당한 일임을 성전 세를 거두는 그 사람이 깨닫기 바라셨을 것입니다. 그런 반면, 세리는 예수님께서 성전 세를 내지 않으면 그것은 그분이 주장해 온 모든 것에 위배된다고 판단하려 들었겠지요. 주님께서는 우리 가운데 한 사람으로 오셨고, 우리가 겪어야 하는 모든 것, 즉 아픔, 고통, 심지어는 세금 바치는 일까지 함께 하러 오셨습니다!
하느님의 아드님께서 성전 세를 내기 위해 동전 한 닢을 구하려 했다는 이야기에서 우리는 좀 더 겸손하라는 교훈을 얻어야 하겠습니다. 예수님의 벗인 베드로 사도처럼 우리도 하느님 나라의 정식 시민이고 하느님의 아들딸로서 놀라운 특권을 누립니다. 우리는 자유와 치유, 구원을 체험할 수 있으며, 우리 주님과 함께하는 영원한 기쁨을 기대할 수 있습니다.
그러나 우리는 또한 인간입니다! 이 세상에 사는 한, 우리는 예수님을 알지 못하는 이들을 존중하고 사랑해야 하며, 심지어는 그분의 계명에 반대하는 사람들에게도 그렇게 대해야 합니다. 우리가 어떤 일을 하든지 오만함이나 무관심을 보이지 말아야 합니다. 오히려 우리는 “비뚤어지고 뒤틀린 이 세대에서 … 별처럼 빛날 수 있도록”(필리 2,15) 해야 합니다. 그리스도를 세상에 전하는 것은, 우리의 신앙을 기꺼이 직접 나서서 증언하고자 하는 마음만큼이나 우리의 겸손과 순종에 달려 있습니다. 


“주님, 당신을 떠나서는 저에게
의로움이 없음을 항상 기억하게 해 주십시오. 저에게 부드러운 마음을 주시어
제가 주님 사랑의 참증인이 되게
해 주십시오!”
