How could one short statement from Jesus produce such a bold proclamation of faith from Nathanael, whom tradition equates with Bartholomew? Jesus merely said, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." And with that, he exclaimed, "You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel" (John 1:48-49). What would move Nathanael to make such a lofty proclamation about Jesus?
It may be helpful to know that it was customary for rabbis and faithful Jews to study the Scriptures while sitting under the shade of a fig tree. If this is what Nathanael had been doing, it adds emphasis to Philip's statement: "We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets" (John 1:45). In other words, "We have found the one you keep searching for in the Scriptures." With a mind attuned to the word of God, Nathanael's heart was probably very open and docile to the Spirit. And so when Jesus spoke to him, it didn't take much for Nathanael to be moved deeply and to respond with such heartfelt, enthusiastic faith.
Jesus wants us to have experiences similar to Nathanael's. He wants us to respond to him with great faith and love, and he knows that this will happen as we immerse ourselves in the study, reading, and praying of the Scriptures. Like Nathanael, our hearts will be open, and ready when he speaks.
You don't have to be sitting under a fig tree for this to happen, by the way. Spending even ten quiet minutes with the Lord can help open you up to receiving more from the Lord and to respond to his promptings with faith and courage.
Why not give the Lord a chance to take you to a deeper level of faith, just as he did for Nathanael? During your prayer and Scripture reading today, be sure to pause and listen to the Lord speaking to you. What does he want to say to you? Respond to him with faith and trust. Jesus loves you deeply, and he really wants to speak to you. Who knows? You might even see angels ascending and descending!

전승에 의하면 바르톨로메오와 동일 인물이라고 하는 나타나엘은 예수님이 하신 짧은 말 한 마디에 어떻게 그렇게 대담한 신앙 고백을 할 수 있었을까요? 예수님께서는 그저 “필립보가 너를 부르기 전에, 네가 무화과나무 아래에 있는 것을 내가 보았다.”라고 하셨는데, 그 말만 듣고 그는 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “스승님, 스승님은 하느님의 아드님이십니다. 이스라엘의 임금님이십니다.”(요한 1,48-49) 나타나엘은 어떻게 해서 그토록 당당하게 예수님이 누구신지 선포할 수 있었을까요?
유다교의 랍비와 신도들은 무화과나무 그늘에 앉아 성경을 공부하는 관습이 있었다는 것을 알면 혹시 도움이 될지 모르겠습니다. 나타나엘이 바로 그렇게 하고 있었다면, 필립보가 “우리는 모세가 율법에 기록하고 예언자들도 기록한 분을 만났소.”(요한 1,45)라고 한 말은 더욱 의미심장해집니다. 그 말은 다시 말하면, “우리는 당신이 성경에서 열심히 찾고 있는 그분을 만났소.”라는 뜻이니까요. 나타나엘의 마음은 하느님의 말씀에 심취되어 아마도 성령을 향해 활짝 열린 순종적인 자세가 되어 있었을 것입니다. 그런 터에 예수님께서 그에게 말을 건네셨으니, 나타나엘이 깊이 감동하여 그렇게 마음에서 우러나는 열정적인 신앙으로 응답하는 것이 어렵지 않았던 것이지요.
예수님께서는 우리가 나타나엘과 비슷한 체험을 하기를 바라십니다. 그분은 우리가 당신께 깊은 믿음과 사랑으로 응답하기를 바라시며, 성경을 공부하고 읽고 기도하는 일에 깊숙이 빠져들면 우리에게 그런 일이 일어나리라는 것을 아십니다. 주님께서 말을 걸어오실 때 우리의 마음도 나타나엘처럼 열려 있고 준비되어 있을 것입니다.
그렇다고 이런 일이 일어나기를 바라며 무화과나무 아래에 앉아 있을 필요는 없습니다. 10분만 조용히 주님과 함께 보내도 당신은 마음이 활짝 열려 주님께서 주시는 것을 더 많이 받고 주님의 말에 믿음과 용기로 응답할 수 있게 될 것입니다.
주님께서 나타나엘에게 하셨던 것과 같이 당신도 더 깊은 믿음으로 인도하시게 해 드리면 어떨까요? 오늘 기도하고 성경을 읽는 동안, 잠시 멈추어 주님께서 당신에게 하시는 말씀을 들어 보십시오. 주님께서는 무슨 말씀을 하려고 하십니까? 그분께 믿음과 신뢰로 응답하십시오. 그분은 당신을 깊이 사랑하시기 때문에 진심으로 당신에게 말을 건네고 싶어하십니다. 당신이 천사들이 오르내리는 것까지 보게 될지 누가 알겠습니까!
