Whether we are rich or not, Jesus' words to this young man apply to us as well. For ultimately, it's not a question of how much or how little we have. Rather, it's about priorities. As Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart also will be" (Matthew 6:21). What we value gives some idea of our relationship to God: Do I have my possessions, or do my possessions have me?
The issue becomes much clearer when see that material possessions are just a small portion of our gifts. No matter how wealthy we may be, if we are walking with the Lord we have all of the "Riches of his grace" (Ephesians 1:7). We have the love of Jesus, the power of his Holy Spirit, and the promise of everlasting life. These aren't things we can buy or sell. They are gifts that we can choose to use for his glory or to waste by keeping them all to ourselves!
Of course, our gifts really do not belong to us anyway. They all come from God, and we are just stewards who have been given a temporary lease on them. That makes it all the more important for us to use them wisely, and to produce lasting fruit for his kingdom. It doesn't take much: One small act of generosity can change an entire destiny. As in the parable of the sower (Mark 4:1-9), it's not whether we produce thirty, sixty, or a hundred fold, but that we start planting the seeds.
God really wants to keep our lives simple. When he says "sell all you have," he is not asking us to take him literally. What he really wants is our hearts. The more pliable we become, the more open to his grace we become, the easier we will find it to be loving and generous. We won't have to think so much about what to do for others, because we will be too busy doing it! All we have to do is to say, "Here I am Lord, I come to do your will." He will take care of the rest.
"Jesus, you are the source of every blessing in my life. Nothing I have belongs to me, so I let go of all I been holding onto.
Use it all for your kingdom!"

우리가 부유하든 가난하든, 예수님께서 이 젊은이에게 하신 말씀은 우리에게도 역시 해당됩니다. 결국 그것은 우리가 얼마나 많이 혹은 얼마나 적게 가졌느냐의 문제가 아니라 우선순위의 문제이기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 “사실 너의 보물이 있는 곳에 너의 마음도 있다.”(마태 6,21)라고 말씀하셨듯이, 우리가 무엇을 소중히 여기느냐에 따라 하느님과의 관계가 어떠한지 알 수 있습니다. 즉 내가 내 재산을 점유하고 있는가, 아니면 내 재산이 나를 점유하고 있는가 하는 것이지요.
물질적 재산이란 그저 우리가 받은 은총의 극히 작은 부분에 불과하다는 것을 깨닫게 되면 이 문제는 더욱 분명해집니다. 우리가 주님과 함께 걷고 있다면 얼마나 부유하든 상관없이 “하느님의 풍성한 은총”(에페 1,7)이 모두 우리의 것이 됩니다. 예수님의 사랑과 그분 성령의 권능과 영원한 생명의 약속이 모두 우리의 것이지요. 이것들은 사고팔 수 있는 물건이 아닙니다. 이것들은 하느님의 영광을 위해 사용할지 아니면 자기가 몽땅 가짐으로써 허비해 버리고 말지 선택할 수 있는 선물입니다!
물론 우리가 받은 것들은 어차피 진정한 우리의 소유가 아닙니다. 그 모든 것이 하느님에게서 오며, 우리는 그것들을 잠시 빌려 쓰는 관리인일 따름입니다. 그렇기에 그것을 지혜롭게 활용하여 하느님 나라를 위해 영원히 없어지지 않을 열매를 맺는 일은 더욱더 중요하게 됩니다. 많은 일을 해야 하는 게 아닙니다. 조금만 자비를 베풀어도 운명 전체를 바꾸어 놓을 수 있습니다. 그것은 씨 뿌리는 사람의 비유(마르 4,1-9)에서처럼, 서른 배, 예순 배, 백 배의 열매를 맺느냐보다 우리가 씨 뿌리는 작업을 시작하는 것입니다.
하느님께서는 진정으로 우리가 단순하게 살기를 바라십니다. “가진 것을 팔아서”라고 말씀하실 때 이를 문자 그대로 해석하라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 그분께서 진심으로 원하시는 것은 우리의 마음입니다. 우리의 마음이 한층 온유해지고 주님의 은총에 더욱더 열려 있게 되면, 사랑과 아량을 베푸는 일이 훨씬 쉬워질 것입니다. 다른 사람들을 위해 무엇을 해야 할까 한참 생각할 필요도 없습니다. 이미 그 일을 하느라 너무나 바쁠 테니까요! 우리가 할 일은 오직 “주님, 주님의 뜻대로 행하기 위해 제가 여기 있습니다.”라고 말씀드리는 것입니다. 나머지는 주님께서 알아서 하실 것입니다.
“예수님, 당신은 제 평생 모든 축복의
원천이십니다. 제가 가진 것 가운데
저의 것은 아무것도 없사오니, 지금껏 쥐고 살아온 모든 것을 떠나보냅니다.
모두 주님 나라를 위해 쓰십시오!” |
