It's easy to get distracted by the pay issue in this parable: one denarius, one day's pay at minimum wage. The master wasn't paying lavishly, but he was paying fairlyat least those he hired first. And they were grumbling about pay they had agreed to. So it's easy to view those first laborers as small-minded and petty, and the ones hired late in the day as lucky. But what if the payment had been more? What if it had been all the riches of heaven (Isaiah 60:4-5)?
Oh, then we wouldn't be judging the workers' reactions. We'd be asking: "Where do I sign up?" Early, late, all such considerations would fade in the light of that kind of pay. So consider, the offer. Here's the pay God is offering us: mercy (1 Peter 1:3), grace (Ephesians 2:7), wisdom (Romans 11:33), understanding (Colossians 2:2-3), all his glory (Romans 9:23), all the resources of Christ (Ephesians 3:8).
That's a fabulous offer! Nothing in this world can touch it. And the thing is, payday is today, tomorrow, every day.
Many things can delay us from presenting ourselves to the Lord: "I have purchased a field [or started a new business venture]" "I have purchased five yoke of oxen [or a new car that I have to pay off]" "I have just married [or graduated, or been incarcerated or hospitalized]" (Luke 14:18-20). We can be so full of excuses and reasonseven good reasons but still, the Master's question sounds clearly: "Why do you stand here idle all day?" (Matthew 20:6).
God has a plan for our lives right now. He knows our circumstances, obligations, abilities, and shortcomings. And he has something for us to do, right now while it is still todaysomething productive, rewarding, adventurous, compelling, and fulfilling. Something that doesn't depend wholly on our ability, because his grace is sufficient for us, and his power is made perfect in our weakness (1 Corinthians 12:9). For our part, we need to be ready when the master calls. Are you listening? Are you making yourself available to be "hired?" Will you go to work right now?
"Father, here I am today,
ready to serve you.
I am willing to put aside my agenda
to fulfill yours. My ears and my heart
are open. Help me to hear your voice."

하루의 품삯으로 최소한 한 데나리온을 받는 이 예화는 우리들을 어리둥절하게 하기 쉽지요. 주인은 적어도 맨 처음 고용한 사람들한테는 후하지는 않아도 공정한 품삯을 주었습니다. 그런데 그들은 받기로 한 품삯을 받고서도 투덜댄 것입니다. 그러니 처음 온 일꾼들은 마음이 좁고 쩨쩨한 사람들이고, 나중에 온 사람들은 운이 좋았다고 생각하기 쉬울 것 같습니다. 그렇지만 만일 품삯이 그 정도가 아니고 더 많은 것이었다면 어땠을까요? 만일 하늘 나라의 모든 보화였다면 어땠을까요?(이사 60,4-5)
아아, 만일 그렇다면 우리는 일꾼들의 반응을 따질 새도 없이 이렇게 물을 것입니다. “어디에다 서명하면 되나요?” 그런 종류의 품삯이라면, 이르고 늦고 따위는 아무 의미도 없을 것입니다. 그러니 그 제안을 생각해 보십시오. 하느님께서 우리에게 주시려는 품삯은 바로 이런 것들, 곧 자비(1베드 1,3)와 은총(에페 2,7), 지혜(로마 11,33)와 지식(콜로 2,2-3), 주님의 모든 영광(로마 9,23)과 그리스도의 풍요(에페 3,8) 같은 것들입니다.
참으로 엄청난 제안이 아닙니까! 이 세상 어떤 것도 이에 비할 수는 없습니다. 그리고 중요한 것은, 오늘도, 내일도, 매일매일이 품삯을 받는 날이라는 것입니다.
“밭을 샀거나”[아니면 새로운 벤처 사업을 시작했거나], “겨릿소 다섯 쌍을 샀거나”[할부로 새 차를 샀거나], “방금 장가를 들었거나”[졸업했거나, 감옥에 갇혔거나, 입원했거나](루카 14,18-20), 우리가 주님 앞에 나아가기를 미룰 일은 수없이 많습니다. 우리에게는 정말 핑계거리도 많고 이유도 많지요. 그중에는 정당한 이유도 있을 테지만, 그렇다고 해도 주님께서는 이렇게 분명하게 물으실 것입니다. “당신들은 왜 온종일 하는 일 없이 여기 서 있소?”(마태 20,6)
하느님께서는 지금 당장 우리에게 시키실 일이 있습니다. 우리가 처한 상황과 맡은 바 임무, 우리의 능력과 부족한 점을 그분은 잘 아십니다. 그래도 주님께서는 지금 당장, 오늘이 가기 전에 우리에게 시키실 일이 있습니다. 생산적이고, 보람 있고, 모험적이고, 흥미롭고, 성취감을 느낄 수 있는 그런 일입니다. 주님의 은총이 우리에게 충만하고, 우리에게 부족한 것을 주님의 능력으로 채워 주시기 때문에, 그것은 온전히 우리의 능력에만 달린 일이 아닙니다.(1코린 12,9) 우리는 그저 주인이 부를 때 준비되어 있기만 하면 됩니다. 당신은 그분 말씀을 듣고 있습니까? ‘고용될’ 준비가 되어 있습니까? 지금 당장 일하러 가시겠습니까?
“아버지, 제가 오늘 여기에 주님을 섬길 채비를 하고 있습니다. 제가 하려던 일은 다 제쳐두고 주님의 일을 기꺼이 완수하려 합니다. 제 귀와 마음은 열려 있으니,
