What faith, confidence, and even joy Paul exudes as he begins his letter to the believers in Colossae! He tells them that he knows that God will continue to work in their lives, even if he must later give them some strong corrections, both as individuals and as a church. Paul knows that this church has its troubles, but he has more confidence in the Holy Spirit's power to heal and transform than in the power of sin to wound and distort. In the end, Paul knows that God will work through their weaknesses and confusion to bring them closer to Christ and to make them more fruitful for the gospel.
We can take a cue from Paul's optimistic opening to this letter. It can be so easy to dwell on our weakness and shortcomings and think that we will never do much for the Lord. But God wants us to be confident, even in the face of our failings, that he will work through us in ways that we could never guess. If God can use people like Peter (an impetuous fisherman) and Paul (a proud intellectual), he certainly can use you!
It can also be easy to look at the weaknesses or faults of other people and conclude that they simply will never amount to much in the kingdom of God. How surprising it can be, then, to see God using them ― sometimes in very dramatic ways! Remember how he used a poor, sickly girl like Bernadette Soubirous during nineteenth-century France. Remember, too, how he used a classic party-boy, Francis Bernardone, in twelfth-century Assisi. Elsewhere, Paul writes how God chooses the weak, lowly, and despised things of the world to shame the strong and wise (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). It seems to be his standard way of operating!
Let us never think that our weaknesses or those of others pose insurmountable obstacles to God. Instead, let's be confident, like Paul, that every human weakness can be overcome by God's goodness and grace. Let's be filled with joy and wonder at our loving Father who always wants the best for us!

spread your kingdom in this world!"

콜로새의 신자들에게 보내는 편지의 서두에서 바오로 사도는 믿음과 확신과 기쁨을 감추지 못하고 있습니다! 그는 그들에게 말하기를, 하느님께서 그들의 삶에서 계속해서 활동하실 것을 자신은 알고 있다고 합니다. 비록 나중에는 신자 개인과 교회 공동체로서 그들이 고쳐야 할 점을 강경하게 지적해 주어야 했지만 말입니다. 바오로는 콜로새 교회에 문제가 있다는 것을 알고 있었지만, 상처를 주고 왜곡하는 죄의 힘보다는 치유하고 변화시키시는 성령의 힘을 더욱 확신했습니다. 그래서 결국에는 하느님께서 그들이 나약하고 혼란에 빠져 있더라도 그들을 그리스도께 더 가까이 이끌어 복음의 열매를 더욱 풍성히 맺게 하실 것을 그는 알고 있었습니다.
우리는 바오로가 보낸 편지의 낙관적인 서두에서 그 실마리를 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 나약함과 단점을 늘어놓으며 주님께 크게 도움이 되는 일을 못할 것이라고 속단하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 하느님께서 원하시는 것은, 우리의 결점에도 아랑곳없이 그분께서는 짐작하지도 못할 방식으로 우리를 통해 활동하실 것이라고 확신하라는 것입니다. 하느님께서 베드로(성급한 어부)와 바오로(도도한 지식인) 같은 사람들을 쓰셨으니 당신도 틀림없이 쓰시겠지요!
다른 이의 나약함이나 잘못을 보고 그들이 하느님 나라에서 대단하게 될 리가 없다고 단언하기도 쉽습니다. 하지만 하느님께서 그런 이들을 쓰시는 것을 보면, 그것도 때론 아주 극적인 방식으로 그러시는 것을 보면 놀랍지 않습니까! 그분이 19세기 프랑스에서 베르나데트 수비루같이 가난하고 병약한 소녀를 어떻게 쓰셨는지를 생각해 보세요! 또 12세기 아시시에서 향락만 좇던 청년 프란치스코 베르나르도네를 어떻게 쓰셨는지도 생각해 보세요. 바오로는 그가 쓴 다른 서간에서, 하느님께서는 강하고 지혜로운 것을 부끄럽게 하시려고 이 세상의 약하고 비천하며 천대받는 것을 선택하셨다고 말했습니다. (1코린 1,27-29) 이게 바로 하느님께서 일하시는 기본적인 방식인 듯합니다!
우리의 나약함이나 다른 이들의 나약함 같은 것들이 하느님께 가는 길을 가로막는 장애물이라고는 절대로 생각하지 맙시다. 그보다는 바오로처럼 인간적인 나약함은 모두 하느님의 선하심과 은총으로 극복할 수 있다고 확신합시다. 그리고 늘 우리에게 가장 좋은 것만 주려 하시는 사랑하는 우리 아버지를 향한 기쁨과 경이로움으로 충만해집시다!

당신의 힘을 주시어 제가 살아가면서
모든 나약함과 장애를 이겨내게 해 주십시오. 저도 이 세상 복음화에 보탬이 되는
일꾼이 되고 싶습니다!”
