Have you ever seen one of those paintings that look like random dots of color that project no image ­ but then as you gaze at it, suddenly something like the Eiffel Tower or the New York City skyline comes into view? Many of Jesus' teachings seem to work this way. We often need to read and reread some gospel passages just so that we can refocus our minds according to God's wisdom. That's why it is so important to ponder the Scriptures prayerfully and not try to read them just for the "raw data" they provide. We need to experience the Holy Spirit reorienting our perspective so that we can see through Christ's eyes.
How can the poor and the hungry be blessed or "perfectly happy"? Of course extreme poverty and hunger cause a human misery that must be addressed in an immediate and material way. Yet here Jesus is teaching that those who seek satisfaction through material wealth are often masking an innate longing for God. Those who admit their utter poverty apart from knowing God and, forsaking other pursuits, hunger and thirst for his Spirit ­ these are the ones who will be rewarded with true and lasting happiness.
To those who are weeping and mourning, Jesus does not say "get over it." He is not advocating pragmatic resignation, for instance, to the death of a loved one. But he also assures us that those who weep with him now will laugh with joy later, for they will be consoled beyond their hopes. Jesus knows that love demands a permanent union, and he promises that we can experience this in his kingdom.
"Blessed are you when people hate you and … exclude and insult you" (Luke 6:22). We humans are intricately connected to each other. The slightest sour look or belittling tone from just the right person can crush us for days. How can being hated and excluded bring us perfect happiness? When we are persecuted because of Christ it is because we are bumping up against old earthly mindsets. This is when we should rejoice and pray for our persecutors: May they pause and wonder at our response ­ and perhaps turn to Christ as a result!

여러분은, 언뜻 보면 아무 형태 없이 색색의 점들이 아무렇게나 찍혀 있는 것 같지만, 뚫어지게 보고 있으면 갑자기 에펠탑이나 뉴욕 시의 마천루들이 나타나는 그림을 본 적이 있습니까? 예수님의 가르침 가운데 많은 것이 바로 이런 식으로 나타납니다. 우리는 종종 어떤 복음 구절을 자꾸만 되풀이해서 읽게 되는데, 그것은 하느님의 지혜에 정신을 집중하기 위해서입니다. 성경을 기도하는 마음으로 묵상하고 단순히 성경에 적힌 ‘글자 그대로’ 읽지 않도록 애쓰는 것이 중요한 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 우리가 그리스도의 눈으로 보기 위해서는 성령께서 우리의 시각을 바로잡아 주시는 것을 체험해야 합니다.

어떻게 해서 가난한 사람들과 굶주리는 사람들이 은총을 받았거나 ‘더할 나위 없이 행복’할 수 있는 걸까요? 물론 극심한 빈곤과 굶주림은 당장 물질적 도움을 주어야 하는 인간적인 고통을 초래합니다. 하지만 여기서 예수님께서는 물질적인 부를 통해 만족을 추구하는 사람은 종종 하느님을 향한 타고난 갈망이 가려질 수 있다는 것을 가르치십니다. 자신이, 하느님을 아는 것과 성령께 주리고 목마른 것 말고는 다른 아무것도 좇지 않는 완전한 가난뱅이임을 고백하는 이들, 이런 이들이 참되고 영원한 행복으로 보답받을 사람들입니다.

예수님께서는 울며 슬퍼하는 사람들에게 ‘잊어버리라’고 말씀하시지 않습니다. 그분은 이를테면 사랑하는 이의 죽음에 대해 체념하는 것이 실용적이라고 주장하시는 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 예수님은 또한 지금 그분과 함께 우는 이가 나중에 기쁨으로 웃으리라고 장담하시는데, 그들이 기대에 넘치게 위로받을 것이기 때문입니다. 예수님께서는 사랑에는 영원한 결합이 필요하다는 것을 아시며, 우리가 이 영원한 결합을 그분의 나라에서 누릴 수 있다고 약속하십니다.
“사람들이 너희를 미워하면, …… 너희를 쫓아내고 모욕하고 중상하면, 너희는 행복하다!”(루카 6,22) 우리 인간들은 서로 복잡 미묘하게 관계를 맺고 있어서, 상대방이 아주 살짝 얼굴을 찡그리거나 무시하는 말투를 해도 며칠 동안 마음이 짓눌려 있기도 합니다. 그런데 어떻게 미움 받고 쫓겨나는 것이 우리에게 더할 나위 없는 행복을 가져다줄 수 있습니까? 우리가 그리스도 때문에 박해받는다면 그것은 우리가 낡은 세속의 사고방식과 부딪치기 때문입니다. 이때가 우리가 기뻐하며 우리를 박해하는 이들을 위해 이렇게 기도해야 할 때입니다. “바라옵건대, 그들이 우리의 반응을 보고 멈칫하며 놀라기를, 그리고 그 덕분에 그리스도께로 돌아서기를 기도합니다!”
