Today, the church reaches back before the pages of the New Testament to celebrate the birth of the Mother of God. In a real sense Mary's birth prepared for our redemption. She was chosen before all time to be the vessel through whom God would take on human flesh for our salvation. The first Spirit-filled person in the New Testament, she was infused with divine grace from the moment of her conception, enabling her to bear the pure, sinless Son of God in her womb.
Matthew begins his Gospel with the genealogy of Jesus, from Abraham, the first to believe in God's promises, through David, the great king of Israel. Why would Matthew go so far back in time? Because he didn't want his readers to overlook how patiently, over the course of many generations, God prepared his people for the promised Messiah. Matthew wanted to make it clear that even in the face of human unfaithfulness, God remained faithful! His genealogy shows how Jesus' ancestry included some great saints, like the generous and upright Boaz, but also some great sinners who brought shame and disaster to God's people (Manasseh, for example ― see 2 Kings 21:1-17). And through it all, God stood by his promise and continued to give his people hope for their future.
Remarkably, Matthew also included some women in his list ― four who played an important personal role in Israel's history. Their presence, unusual in a Jewish genealogy, points to the extraordinary position of Mary. Her place at the end of this genealogy is a powerful witness to God's faithfulness. As an example to us, she waited with joyful hope. She never doubted that God would fulfill his promises to her and to his people.
Why do we get discouraged when we encounter setbacks and challenges? Perhaps our hope is misplaced or we are impatient. The message of today's gospel is that God wants us to wait on him with confident trust in his promises. Although we may fail, he never fails. When we learn to wait patiently and trustingly, just as Mary did, God will give us all the grace we need to persevere. He will fulfill his promises ― and we will see his glory!

오늘 교회는 신약 이전으로 돌아가 하느님의 어머니 되시는 분의 탄생을 경축합니다. 성모 마리아 탄생의 진정한 의미는 그로써 우리 구원이 가능하게 되었다는 것입니다. 마리아는 처음부터 하느님께서 우리의 구원을 위해 인간의 몸을 취할 그릇으로 선택받으신 분입니다. 신약성경에서 처음으로 성령이 충만해지신 분인 성모님은 깨끗하고 죄 없으신 하느님의 아드님을 태중에 품을 수 있도록 수태 순간부터 하느님의 은총을 듬뿍 받으셨습니다.
복음사가 마태오는 복음의 첫 대목에 하느님의 약속을 처음으로 믿은 믿음의 조상 아브라함에서부터 이스라엘에서 가장 위대한 임금 다윗을 거치는 예수님의 족보를 적었습니다. 마태오는 왜 그렇게 까마득한 과거를 되짚은 걸까요? 그것은 많은 세대를 거치면서 하느님께서 얼마나 끈기 있게 그분의 백성에게 약속된 구세주를 맞을 준비를 시키셨는지, 읽는 이들이 간과하지 않기를 바랐기 때문입니다. 비록 인간들은 하느님께 신의를 저버려도 하느님은 끝까지 신의를 지키시는 분임을 밝히고 싶었던 것이지요! 예수님의 족보를 보면, 너그럽고 강직한 보아즈와 같은 위대한 성도들만 있는 것이 아니라 하느님의 백성에게 수치와 재앙을 안겨 준 큰 죄인들(이를테면 므나쎄 임금, 2열왕 21,1-17 참조)도 섞여 있는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이 오랜 세월 동안 하느님께서는 약속을 지키시며 그분의 백성에게 미래에 대한 희망을 꾸준히 심어 주셨습니다.
놀랍게도 마태오 복음의 족보에는 여자들도 들어 있는데, 그 네 명의 여자는 이스라엘 역사에서 저마다 중요한 역할을 했던 인물들입니다. 유다인의 족보에서는 흔치 않은 이들의 존재는 후에 성모님이 차지할 매우 특별한 위치를 암시합니다. 족보의 마지막에 있는 그녀의 자리는 하느님께서 신의를 지키시는 분이라는 강력한 증거이지요. 우리의 모범이신 성모님은 기쁜 희망을 안고 기다렸습니다. 하느님께서 자신과 이스라엘 백성들에게 하신 약속을 이루시리라는 것을 한 번도 의심하지 않으면서요.
왜 우리는 장애나 난관에 부딪힐 때면 낙담하고 맙니까? 기대가 잘못되었을 수도 있고 조급함 때문일 수도 있습니다. 오늘 복음 말씀이 전하는 바는, 하느님께서는 우리가 그분의 약속을 확고히 믿고 기다리기를 원하신다는 것입니다. 우리는 약속을 못 지킨다 해도 그분은 절대로 안 그러십니다. 성모님처럼 우리도 끈기 있게 믿고 기다릴 줄 알게 되면, 하느님께서는 우리에게 참고 견딜 만한 값진 은총을 주실 것입니다. 그분은 약속대로 이루실테고 우리는 그분의 영광을 보게 될 것입니다!
