Jesus was not naive about the hardships of traveling. Having walked many miles proclaiming God's kingdom, he understood perfectly well what was needed for long journeys. Yet as he sent the apostles out, Jesus told them not to bother about the very things that made traveling possible. Yes, he gave them "power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases" and preach. But then he turned around and told them to take "nothing" for their journey: "neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money" (Luke 9:1-3). There is an inconsistency here that just doesn't make sense!
When you think about it, though, what sense does it make for Almighty God to work his miraculous, healing power through mere human beings at all? Why would he depend on us to preach his kingdom? Why would God choose us to do his supernatural work?
Incredible as it seems, God wants to show his power to us and make us instruments through which that power is manifested to the rest of the world. Our part is to respond with the kind of faith and trust that allow him to work. Jesus meant it when he said, "whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father" (John 14:12). What an overwhelming thought! But as Jesus told these apostles before sending them out, trust in God makes this possible. When we look to our heavenly Father, he supplies everything we need.
God has such confidence in us because he has provided us with all the grace we need to do his mission. The question is, do we have confidence in God? When someone tells you about an illness, pray in faith that they be healed. If family relationships are strained, pray and expect miracles in Jesus' name! God wants his wonders to be a normal part of life. If you do, too, start praying with anticipation and watch for God to work. Write down your intercessory prayers, and record how they are answered. It won't take you long to fill an entire notebook!

예수님께서 여행의 어려움을 모르셨을 리가 없지요. 하느님 나라를 선포하며 먼 길을 다니셨기 때문에, 긴 여정에 무엇이 필요한지는 아주 잘 알고 계셨습니다. 그런데 예수님께서는 당신 제자들을 파견하시면서, 여행에 꼭 필요한 것들을 걱정하지 말라고 하셨습니다. 그렇습니다, 그분께서는 제자들에게 “모든 마귀를 쫓아 내고 질병을 고치는 힘과 권한을” 주시고 하느님 나라를 선포하게 하셨습니다. 그러나 그런 다음 돌아서서 그들에게 이르시기를, 여행을 위하여 “아무것도” 가져가지 말라고 하셨습니다. “지팡이도 여행 보따리도 빵도 돈도 여벌 옷도” 말입니다.(루카 9,1-3) 도대체 이해할 수 없는 일관성 없는 말이 아닌가요!
그렇지만 생각해 보면, 전능하신 하느님께서 한낱 인간을 통해 그분의 기적적인 치유의 능력을 행사하게 하신 것은 이해가 됩니까? 하느님 나라를 선포하는 일을 왜 우리에게 맡기셨을까요? 하느님께서는 당신의 초자연적인 임무를 수행하라고 왜 우리를 선택하셨을까요?
믿을 수 없을 듯이 보이겠지만, 하느님께서는 우리에게 당신의 능력을 보여 주시고 우리를 당신의 도구로 만들어 우리를 통해 세상 사람들에게 당신의 권능을 드러내고 싶어하십니다. 우리는 주님께서 일하실 수 있도록 믿음과 신뢰로 응답하기만 하면 됩니다. 예수님께서 “나를 믿는 사람은 내가 하는 일을 할 뿐만 아니라, 그보다 더 큰 일도 하게 될 것이다. 내가 아버지께 가기 때문이다.”(요한 14,12)라고 하신 말씀의 의미가 바로 이것이었습니다. 얼마나 놀라운 생각입니까! 그러나 예수님께서 사도들을 파견하시기 전에 말씀하셨듯이, 하느님을 믿으면 이것이 가능합니다. 하늘에 계신 아버지께 향하면, 그분은 우리에게 필요한 것은 다 주십니다.
당신의 일을 하는 데 필요한 은총을 우리에게 모두 다 주셨기 때문에 하느님께서는 우리를 그토록 믿으십니다. 그런데 문제는 우리가 하느님을 믿는가 하는 것입니다. 누군가가 병에 걸렸다는 말을 들으면 그들이 낫게 되리라 믿으면서 기도하십시오. 가족 간에 문제가 생겼다면 예수님의 이름으로 기도하고 기적을 바라십시오! 하느님께서는 기적이 우리 생활의 당연한 부분으로 여겨지기 바라십니다. 당신도 역시 그렇다면 그런 기대를 품고서 기도를 바치고 하느님께서 역사하시는 것을 지켜보십시오. 전구기도를 적고, 그것들이 어떻게 응답을 받는지 기록하십시오. 오래지 않아 공책 한 권이 가득 찰 것입니다!

“성령님, 당신의 모든 백성에게 힘을 주시어 하늘 나라를 증언하게 해 주십시오.
주님의 말씀에서 당신을 느끼고
당신께서 주시는 모든 은총을 받게
도와주십시오.
저희를 당신 사랑을 전하는 사절이
되게 해 주십시오.”
