A manager is told that he is being dismissed because of improper behavior. He may have lost his job, but he still has his quick mind. So he becomes creative, and in a series of private meetings, he reduces the debt that various customers have owed to his boss. It seems that he had been overcharging these customers all along, taking the excess for himself, so there was no loss to the company, and the manager himself finally came clean. As a result, the manager won over his debtors and impressed his boss.
"The children of this world are more prudent… than are the children of light" (Luke 16:8). They understand that position and authority are powerful tools that can influence people both ― for good or for ill. If people of the world act as shrewdly as this manager to help themselves in a crisis, how much more should we be shrewd in our attempts to gain influence for the Lord in our world?
We should be clear: This parable is not about salvation, since salvation is a free gift from God. It is about using our minds and our resources to build the kingdom of God. It is about our need to intercede for people and petition heaven ­ even making deals with God, as Abraham did ­ for our loved ones, our friends, and for those suffering hardship. This parable also touches on our disposition toward money. This, too, is a valuable resource that we can use to help those in need, to bring other people joy, and to evangelize. We just have to be creative in how we use it!
So let's take an accounting today. How much do I manipulate, deceive, or use other people? What will it take to treat them more with more respect, honesty, and fairness ­ just as I want to be treated? Where does my money go? How much of it is spent on me, and how much is spent on my family, my friends, or the needy?

teach me to be shrewd with my gifts.

I want to be highly valued in your eyes, not in the world's eyes.
Jesus, I want to serve you."

어떤 집사가 일을 제대로 못하여 해고 통지를 받았습니다. 그는 일자리를 잃을 수도 있었으나 약삭빠르게 머리를 굴렸지요. 생각을 짜내어 자기 주인에게 빚진 사람들을 개인적으로 만나서 그들이 진 빚을 삭감해 주었습니다. 주인에게 빚을 얻는 사람들에게 그가 그동안 죽 과다청구를 해 왔고 남는 돈은 자신이 차지하였던 모양입니다. 그래서 주인에게는 아무런 손실도 입히지 않으면서 그 자신은 마침내 결백하게 되었습니다. 그 결과 집사는 빚쟁이들의 인심을 얻었고 주인의 마음에도 들었습니다.
“이 세상의 자녀들이 …… 빛의 자녀들보다 영리하다.”(루카 16,8) 그들은 지위와 권위가 나쁜 일에건 좋은 일에건 사람들에게 영향을 줄 수 있는 강력한 수단이라는 것을 잘 압니다. 세상 사람들도 위기에서 자신을 구하기 위해 이 집사처럼 영리하게 행동하는 터에, 주님을 위하여 이 세상에 감화를 주어야 하는 우리야 이보다 얼마나 더 영리해야 하겠습니까?
분명히 할 점은, 이 비유는 구원에 관한 게 아니라는 것입니다. 구원은 하느님께서 우리에게 거저 주시는 것이니까요. 이것은 하느님 나라 건설을 위해 우리의 마음과 우리가 가진 것들을 어떻게 쓰느냐 하는 문제입니다. 사람들을 위해 전구하고 하늘 나라에 청원하는 것이 필요하다는 말입니다. 우리가 사랑하는 사람들과 친구들, 그리고 고통을 겪는 이들을 위해서라면 아브라함이 했던 것처럼 하느님과도 협상해야 한다는 말이지요. 또한 이 비유는 우리가 재산을 어떻게 사용해야 하는지도 말해 줍니다. 우리의 재산은 어려운 사람들을 돕고 다른 이들에게 기쁨을 주며 복음을 전할 수 있는 소중한 자산이기도 합니다. 이를 어떻게 쓸지 창의적으로 생각해야 합니다!
그러니 오늘 결산을 해 봅시다. 우리는 얼마나 많이 다른 사람들을 조종하고, 속이고, 이용하고 있습니까? 우리가 대우받고 싶은 만큼 그들을 좀더 존중하고 좀더 정직하고 공정하게 대하려면 어떻게 해야 합니까? 나는 돈을 어디에다 씁니까? 나를 위해서는 얼마나 많은 돈을 쓰고, 내 가족과 친구들, 혹은 가난한 사람들을 위해서는 또 얼마나 씁니까?

제가 받은 선물을 가지고
영리하게 쓰는 법을 가르쳐 주십시오.
저는 세상의 눈이 아니라,
주님의 눈에 들고 싶습니다.
예수님, 저는 주님을 섬기고 싶습니다.”
