Cyrus was having a good year. Having overrun Babylon, this pagan king from Persia was now a world conqueror along the lines of Nebuchadnezzar and Alexander the Great. Among those living in Babylon were the Jews who decades earlier had been exiled from their home land as part of the spoils of war. Occupied by his wealth and power, Cyrus had no interest in Judaism or Yahweh, yet he was a shrewd leader who wanted to win the allegiance of his newly acquired subjects. Thus he proclaimed that the Jews could return to Jerusalem and begin to rebuild their Temple, which the Babylonians had destroyed.
To most of the Jews living in exile, Cyrus was an unlikely instrument in God's hand. Hearing this pagan speak as if Yahweh had personally commissioned him to rebuild the Temple must have sounded like blasphemy to them. Yet God can use whom he chooses, and it seems that he chose Cyrus. All the inhabitants of earth belong to God, and he uses them and blesses them in accord with his plan.
God was also at work inspiring those Jews who heard Cyrus' edict and chose to embark on the long and difficult journey home. As a result, their mission sparked hope in the many Jews who stayed in Babylon and supplied the departing party with money and valuable resources. Their liberation, so long hoped for yet hard to imagine, was now unfolding. In the coming years, many more Jews would be bold enough to make the hard journey, and Jerusalem would be rebuilt.
This story of Cyrus' edict and the Jews' response tells us that we must never give up hope ­ even if years pass and our prayers seem unanswered. By staying close to Jesus in prayer, we can keep cynicism and doubt at bay and become instead like those Jews who hoped against all hope and lived to see their dreams fulfilled. God will fulfill his promises, even if he uses unlikely people, unlikely events, or unlikely timing to do so.

Still, I marvel at your wisdom and love.
Help me to trust in you
when my prayers seem unanswered.
Guard me from despair
and open my eyes to see you at work
all around me,
surrounding me with your love."

키루스 임금은 제위 제일년의 호시절을 보내고 있었습니다. 이교도인 페르시아 임금 키루스는 바빌론을 정복하여 네부카드네자르 임금, 알렉산더 대제에 이어 세계의 정복자가 되었지요. 당시 바빌론에 살던 사람들 중에는 수십 년 전에 전쟁의 전리품으로 자신들의 고향에서 유배되어 온 유다인들이 있었습니다. 부와 권력을 누리던 키루스는 유다교나 하느님에는 아무 관심이 없었지만, 새로 백성이 된 사람들에게서 충성을 얻으려 했던 통찰력 있는 지도자였습니다. 그래서 그는 칙서를 반포하여 유다인들이 예루살렘으로 돌아가 바빌론 사람들이 파괴했던 그들의 신전을 재건할 수 있게 하였습니다.
유배를 살던 대부분의 유다인이 보기에 키루스는 하느님이 도구로 쓰실 만한 사람이 전혀 아니었습니다. 이 이교도가 마치 하느님께서 친히 자신에게 신전 재건을 위탁하신 것처럼 말하는 것을 들은 유다인들은 불경스럽게 생각했을 게 분명합니다. 그러나 누구든 선택하여 쓰실 수 있는 하느님께서 이번에는 키루스를 선택하신 것 같습니다. 이 세상에 사는 사람들은 모두 하느님께 속하며, 하느님께서는 당신의 계획에 맞게 그들을 쓰시고 은총을 내리십니다.
하느님께서는 키루스의 칙령을 들은 유다인의 마음을 움직여 그들로 하여금 길고 험난한 귀향길에 오르게 하셨습니다. 그 결과, 그들이 돌아가서 행할 사명은 바빌론에 남아 있는 많은 유다인의 희망에 불을 붙였고, 그래서 그들은 떠나는 사람들에게 돈과 보화를 내주었습니다. 이제까지 오래도록 바라왔으나 꿈도 꿀 수 없었던 해방이 이제 막 실현되려 하고 있었습니다. 앞으로도 수년간, 더 많은 유다인들이 어려움을 무릅쓰고 과감히 여행길에 오를 것이었으며, 그리하여 예루살렘은 재건될 것이었습니다.
이 이야기에 나오는 키루스의 칙령과 여기에 유다인이 어떻게 응했는지 보면 절대로 희망을 버려서는 안 된다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 아무리 세월이 흐르고 우리의 기도가 응답받지 못한 듯 보여도 말입니다. 기도하면서 예수님 가까이 머물면 자포자기와 회의에 빠지지 않을 것이며, 끝끝내 복을 받아 자신들의 꿈이 이루어지는 것을 본 유다인들처럼 될 수 있습니다. 하느님께서는 예상치 못한 사람이나 예상치 못한 사건, 혹은 예상치 못한 때를 이용하시더라도, 당신의 약속을 꼭 지키실 것입니다.

“아버지, 저는 아버지가 일하시는 방식을
이해하기 어렵지만, 그래도 저는 당신의 지혜와 사랑에 감탄합니다.

제 기도가 응답받지 않을 때에도
주님을 믿게 도와주십시오.
저를 절망에서 지켜 주시고,
주님께서 제 주위에서 일하시고
사랑으로 감싸고 계심을 깨닫도록
눈을 뜨게 해 주십시오.”
