After fifty years of exile in Babylon, the Jews were finally allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple that lay in ruins. They set out enthusiastically, and God seemed to smile on their endeavor. Cyrus, the emperor, returned the gold utensils stolen from the Temple, and composed letters of safe passage. Their neighbors gifted them with valuables and necessities. Within a few months of their arrival in Jerusalem, they began keeping feast days and offering sacrifices on an open-air altar. They began the rebuilding project, stopping often to praise God loudly.
But then things began to go awry. The work ground on slowly, with little visible progress. Their pagan neighbors tried to intimidate them and began bad-mouthing them to Cyrus and his successors. Discouraged, God's people stopped their work.
Through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, however, God admonished his people and encouraged them to press on. The Persian rulers also discovered Cyrus' original decree and ordered the local authorities to enable the work and not interfere. The people rallied, and the Temple began to take shape once more.
Has something like this ever happened to you? Have you ever set out energetically to do God's work, but ended up disheartened or overwhelmed? It can be so easy to forget that it's God's work that you're doing, not your own. If it is not done in his strength, for his glory, and with his love, we "labor in vain" (Psalm 127:1). It is vital to remember that the results, and their timing, are up to God alone.
God is not finished with you. And he certainly hasn't abandoned you! His "timely help" may come in a form we are not expecting (Hebrews 4:16). It may be a word that pierces us to the heart and galvanizes us into action. It may be the reinforcement of having someone join in the work. It may be a change in circumstances that removes an obstacle. Whatever shape it takes, we should be confident in this one thing: It will come!
In the meantime, don't lose heart.

for calling me to join your people
in building your temple here on earth.
Come live among us in power
as we work together
to give concrete form to your kingdom
and to fling open its doors to the world."

바빌론에서 유배 생활을 하던 유다인들은 50년이 지난 후 마침내 예루살렘에 돌아가 폐허가 된 신전을 재건하도록 허락받았습니다. 그들은 열성적으로 일을 시작하였으며 하느님께서는 그들의 열의에 미소 지으셨을 것입니다. 키루스 임금은 신전에서 빼앗아갔던 금으로 된 기물들을 되돌려 주고 안전을 보장하는 칙령을 내렸습니다. 이웃 사람들은 그들에게 보화와 일용품을 선물하였습니다. 예루살렘에 도착한 지 몇 달 지나지 않아, 그들은 축제를 지내고 성전 터에 제단만 쌓아놓고 번제물을 바치기 시작하였습니다. 그들은 공사를 시작하였으며, 종종 일을 멈추고 하느님을 큰 소리로 찬양하였습니다.
그러다가 점차 일이 틀어지기 시작하였습니다. 공사는 서서히 침체되어 별 진척이 없었고, 이교도 이웃들은 그들을 협박하려 하였으며 키루스 임금과 그의 후계자들에게 그들을 헐뜯기 시작하였습니다. 하느님의 백성들은 용기를 잃고 공사를 중단하고 말았습니다.
그러나 하느님께서는 예언자 하까이와 즈카르야를 통하여 당신의 백성들을 타이르고 일을 계속하도록 격려하셨습니다. 페르시아의 통치자들도 키루스가 내린 칙령 원본을 찾아내어 지방관들에게 공사를 다시 시작하게 하고 방해하지 말도록 지시하였습니다. 백성들은 다시 힘을 모았고, 성전은 다시금 모습을 갖추어 가기 시작하였습니다.
이와 비슷한 일이 당신에게도 일어난 적이 있습니까? 열정적으로 하느님의 일에 착수했다가 낙담하거나 기가 죽어 그만둔 적이 있습니까? 당신이 하는 일이 당신 자신의 일이 아니라 ‘하느님의 일’이라는 것을 잊기는 너무나 쉽습니다. 하지만 그 일을 그분의 능력과 그분의 영광, 그분의 사랑으로 행하지 않는다면, 우리의 ‘수고가 헛되게’ 됩니다.(시편 127,1) 반드시 기억해야 할 것은 결과와 시기가 오로지 하느님께 달려 있다는 것입니다.
하느님께서는 당신과의 관계를 끊으신 것이 아니며, 절대로 당신을 버리지 않으셨습니다! 주님께서는 우리가 예상치 못한 방식으로 “필요할 때에 도움이 되게” 하실 것입니다.(히브 4,16) 우리 마음을 뚫고 들어와 실행에 옮기게 하는 한마디 말을 들려주실 수도 있고, 그 일을 함께 할 사람을 늘려 주실 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 장애물을 없애어 상황을 바꾸어 주실지도 모릅니다. 그게 어떤 식이건, 이 한 가지만은 굳게 믿으십시오. 그때는 반드시 옵니다!
그러니 그동안은 절대 낙담하지 마십시오.

“아버지, 이 땅에 당신의 성전을 짓는 일에
당신의 백성과 함께 일하도록
저를 불러 주시니 고맙습니다.
우리가 함께 하느님 나라의 형상을 다듬고
세상을 향해 그 문을 활짝 열 때,
주님, 오시어 당신의 권능으로
저희 안에 임하십시오.”
