God promised the Jews who returned from exile that the splendor of the reconstructed Temple would far outshine that of Solomon's Temple ­ an ancient architectural wonder. What is ironic is that the Temple these people rebuilt was a mere shadow of the former one. It wasn't until centuries later ­ only a few decades before Jesus was born ­ that Herod the Great began a major renovation project that made this second edifice almost unrecognizable. When it was finally finished, this new and improved structure was dubbed the "Second Temple," as if the building in Haggai's time didn't even count.
Why would God promise such splendor to a Temple that was so far a cry from its predecessor and successor? Because he sees differently than we do. God wasn't speaking of the splendor of a building as much as he was speaking of the hearts of the people who sacrificed to build it. He promised that if they remained faithful, they would know a time of peace and blessing. It isn't buildings that make God happy but a people who make him their strength and song.
This episode from the Book of Haggai shows us that what is splendid in the eyes of the world may not have even the slightest interest to our Father in heaven. What does God value? Humility. Obedience. Simplicity. Reverence. Neediness. He values the attitudes that keep us open to his word, to his correction, and to his comfort. He values everything we do that takes us one step closer to becoming Christ in this world.
To see the glory of God's temple ­ a temple that surpasses any other ­ we must let the Holy Spirit continue to change us. God wants to heal us of our weaknesses and fill our strengths with his glory and power. He wants to transform us into reflections of his presence. So let Jesus tear down the old structures of pride, self-sufficiency, and independence in you. Let him rebuild you on the solid rock of Christ.

you are the builder of my life.
Create in me the heart you want me to have, a heart set on no one but you.
Work so powerfully in me that other people will see your presence in me. 

May I never boast except in the saving power of Jesus, my Lord." 

하느님께서는 유배에서 돌아온 유다인들에게 약속하시기를, 재건될 성전의 영광은 고대 건축의 경이였던 솔로몬의 신전을 훨씬 능가할 것이라고 하셨습니다. 하지만 우습게도 이 사람들이 다시 지은 성전은 옛 성전의 모습을 찾아볼 수 없을 정도로 볼품없었습니다. 몇백 년이 지나, 예수님이 태어나시기 몇십 년 전에 헤로데 임금이 이 두 번째 건축물을 거의 새로운 모습으로 대대적으로 수리할 때까지 말이지요. 공사가 끝났을 때 이 새롭게 개축된 건축물은 ‘제2의 성전’이라고 불렸습니다. 마치 하까이 시대에 지은 성전은 치지도 않는다는 듯이 말이지요. 
 하느님께서는 어째서 앞선 것이나 나중 것에 크게 못 미치는 성전에 영광을 약속하셨을까요? 왜냐하면 하느님께서는 우리와는 다르게 보시기 때문입니다. 하느님께서는 건물의 화려함을 말씀하신 것이 아니라, 그 건물을 지으려고 자신을 바친 사람들의 마음을 말씀하신 것입니다. 하느님께서는 그들이 믿음을 지킨다면, 평화와 은총의 시절을 보게 되리라고 하셨습니다. 하느님을 기쁘게 하는 것은 건물이 아니라 그분을 자신들의 힘과 노래로 삼은 사람들입니다.
하까이서의 이 이야기에서, 이 세상 사람들이 보기에 화려하게 빛나는 것이 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지가 보시기에는 아무런 관심거리도 되지 않음을 알 수 있습니다. 하느님께서 값지게 여기시는 것은 무엇입니까? 겸손과 순명, 소박함, 공손함, 청빈 같은 것들입니다. 주님의 말씀을 듣고 가르침과 위로를 받으려고 항상 열린 마음가짐을 주님은 귀하게 여기십니다. 우리가 무슨 일을 하건 그것이 우리를 이 세상에서 그리스도가 되는 길로 한 발짝 더 가까이 이끌어 준다면 주님은 그것을 귀하게 여기십니다.
다른 어느 성전에도 비할 데 없는 하느님 성전의 영광을 보려면, 우리는 성령께서 우리를 끊임없이 변화시키실 수 있게 해야 합니다. 하느님께서는 우리의 나약한 부분을 낫게 하시고 주님의 영광과 권능으로 우리를 강하게 채우고자 하십니다. 주님의 현존을 드러내는 모습으로 우리를 변화시키고자 하십니다. 그러니 예수님께서 당신 안에 있는 오만과 자부심, 독선의 옛 건물을 무너뜨리고, 그리스도의 단단한 반석 위에 당신을 새로 짓게 하십시오.

“저의 삶을 지어내신 주 하느님,
당신께서 원하시는 대로
제 안에 다른 누구도 아닌 주님만 향하는
마음을 지어 주십시오.
다른 이들이 제게서 주님의 모습을 볼 수 있게 제 안에서 힘차게 일하여 주십시오.
나의 주님, 당신의 구원 능력에 머무는 것만이 저의 자랑이 되게 하여 주십시오.”
