"Follow me." (Matthew 9:9)
Jesus' words to Matthew can sound so curt, but Matthew couldn't refuse the invitation or the other invitations that Jesus would give him throughout his life. At first, it was an invitation to receive Jesus’ mercy and a new life. Then, it grew into a call to change his old life through repentance and obedience. From there, it became a call to go out to the people of Israel and do the very things Jesus was doing (Matthew 10). Then, it became a call to witness Jesus’ arrest, passion, and death. Then, after Pentecost, the call grew to include a command to love his brothers and sisters in the church and to build the kingdom of God even if that meant persecution and martyrdom. And to think, it all began with one simple invitation to leave his tax office and follow Jesus.
“Follow me." What is Jesus calling you to today? Is he leading you to deeper repentance from sin? Is he inviting you to take more of a risk in sharing the good news at work? Is he asking you to trust in his provision as you give of yourself in service to someone in need? Whatever the case may be, Jesus' invitation is not just a one-time command. It's a way of life.
While this may sound intimidating, there is a great promise here as well. No matter where we are in our spiritual lives, Jesus will be with us, whispering his invitation to our hearts. He is completely committed to us, always offering us a deeper intimacy with him as we continue to follow him through all the stages in our lives. So what is Jesus saying today? How will you "follow" him as this day unfolds?
"Lord Jesus, I hear you calling me.
I want to respond with a whole hearted
'Yes,' but part of me is scared
― scared of the unknown and
scared of what I do know about the cost of discipleship.
Will following you lead me to a richer life?
Will you always be with me?
Do you promise to forgive me when I fail?
To strengthen me when I am weak?
Lord, calm my fears
and quiet those voices telling me
that this invitation is too risky.
Fill me with trust in your goodness.
Fill me with courage and faith and hope!
Lord, I will follow!" |
“나를 따라라.”(마태 9,9)
예수님께서는 마태오 사도에게 그저 짧게 한마디 하셨지만, 마태오는 주님의 부르심을 거부할 수가 없었습니다. 비단 그때뿐만이 아니라 평생에 걸쳐 마태오는 예수님의 부르심을 물리칠 수 없었지요. 처음에는 예수님의 자비와 새 생명을 받으라고 부르셨고, 그 다음에는 회개와 순명을 통해 예전의 삶을 변화시키라는 더 큰 부르심으로 이어졌으며, 그러고 나서부터는 이스라엘 백성들에게 가서 예수님께서 하시는 그대로 그들에게 하라고 부르셨습니다.(마태 10) 그리고는 예수님께서 잡히시고 수난하시고 돌아가신 것을 증언하라고 부르셨습니다. 성령께서 강림하신 후에는 교회 안의 형제자매를 사랑하고 하느님 나라를 건설하라는 명령까지 담고 있는 부르심이었습니다. 비록 그것이 박해와 순교를 뜻하더라도 말입니다. 생각해 보면, 이 모든 것이 세관을 떠나 예수님을 따라 오라고 하신 짤막한 부르심에서 시작되었습니다.
“나를 따라라.” 예수님께서는 오늘 당신에게 무엇을 하라고 부르십니까? 더욱 깊이 죄를 뉘우치라고 하십니까? 일터에서 좀더 과감하게 복음을 전하라고 하십니까? 당신이 어려움에 처한 이를 위해 자신을 희생한 것은 그분께서 갚아 주시리란 것을 믿으라고 하십니까? 그것이 무엇이든 예수님의 부르심은 한 번으로 끝나는 게 아닙니다. 그것은 평생에 걸쳐 해야 할 일입니다.
이렇게 말한다면 부담스럽게 들릴지 모르지만 사실은 그 안에 심오한 약속도 함께 담겨 있습니다. 우리의 영적 삶이 어떤 상태에 있든 예수님께서는 언제나 우리 곁에 계시면서 우리 마음에 당신의 부르심을 속삭여 주신다는 것입니다. 우리가 인생 여정의 단계마다 끊임없이 그분을 따른다면 주님께서는 우리와 더 깊은 친교를 맺으시면서 우리에게 당신을 다 내어주십니다. 자, 예수님께서는 오늘 당신에게 무슨 말씀을 하십니까? 오늘을 지내면서 당신은 주님을 어떻게 “따르렵니까”?
“주 예수님, 저를 부르시는 당신 소리가
들립니다. 온 마음으로 ‘네’라고
대답하고 싶지만 조금은 겁이 납니다.
미지의 세계가 두렵고 제가 아는 바,
주님의 제자가 되려면 치를 희생이
두려워서입니다. 주님을 따른다면
제 인생이 더 풍요로워질까요?
주님께서는 언제나 제 곁에 계실 건가요?
제가 잘못해도 용서해 주신다고 약속하시나요?
또 제가 약해지면 힘이 되어 주실 건가요?
주님, 제 두려움을 달래 주시고,
주님의 부르심이 위험천만이라고
속닥이는 소리들을 잠재워 주십시오.
주님의 선하심을 믿는 마음으로
저를 채워 주십시오.
저에게 용기와 믿음과 희망을 주십시오!
주님, 당신을 따르렵니다!”
