Look at the lengths God went to in order to speak to Jonah and guide his steps. As the story unfolds, God pursues Jonah in a variety of waysthrough a prophetic calling, through a storm at sea, in the belly of a huge fish, even through a hapless and short-lived broom tree. When God first called Jonah to be his mouthpiece to Nineveh, the hated capitol of powerful Assyria, Jonah flatly refused. Suspecting that God intended to show mercy to these enemies of Israel, he became resentful and fled by sea to far off Tarshish.
Jonah figured that even if he changed his mind, he would be too far away to do any good. But he quickly learned that it is impossible to outsmart God when his attempt to flee included a violent storm and an unexpected trip overboard. That's when God, with whom all things are possible, provided the great fish to swallow Jonah and speed him home so that he might start all over again. This unique mode of transportation helped Jonah put things in perspective so that when God called him a second time, he obeyed. Such a dramatic and at times comical story points out that God will persistently pursue us in order to work his will.
Stories like this one are just one way that God tries to speak to us. The Bible is also filled with historical narratives, prayers, poems, theological discourses, and even fables that flood us with light from above. But God doesn't stop with the Bible. In the course of a single day, he might speak to us through music, through our imaginations, in our prayer, through a casual conversation, through a new experience, or even through the old, familiar routine of our lives.
How often do you "catch" one of these words from God in a day? Once? Twice? Never? We can cultivate an ear for God through expectant listening and trusting obedience to what we hear. God is always calling out to us, and he will continue to speak, waiting patiently for us to hear his call over the din of our busy lives.

Teach me to look for you
all through my day.
Help me to be open to the "surprises"
you have in store for me today.
Soften my heart to your word.
Help me to know you are near."

하느님께서 요나에게 말씀하시고 그의 발걸음을 인도하시고자 어디까지 다니셨는지 한 번 보세요. 이야기가 전개되면서 하느님께서는 요나를 다양한 방법으로 쫓아다니십니다. 예언자로 부르심을 통해, 바다의 폭풍우 속에서, 큰 물고기 배 속에서, 심지어는 하룻밤 사이에 죽어버린 불운한 아주까리를 통해서 말이지요. 하느님께서 처음에 요나에게 그가 미워하던 강성한 아시리아의 수도 니네베에 가서 그분의 대변자가 되라고 하셨을 때, 요나는 딱 잘라 거절했습니다. 하느님께서 이스라엘의 적인 그들에게 자비를 보이시려 한다고 짐작했기에, 그는 화가 나서 바다 건너 멀리 타르시스로 달아났습니다.
요나는 혹시라도 나중에 자신의 생각이 바뀌더라도 너무 멀리 있어 아무 소용없게 될 거라고 판단했던 것이지요. 그러나 그는 달아나려고 하다가 사나운 폭풍우를 만났고 뜻밖에 바다 속으로 던져지게 되자 하느님을 속이기란 불가능하다는 것을 금세 깨닫게 되었습니다. 바로 그때에 불가능한 일이 없으신 하느님께서 큰 물고기를 시켜 요나를 삼키게 하고 집으로 되돌려 보내어 그가 다시 처음부터 시작할 수 있게 하셨습니다. 이렇게 희한한 방법으로 집으로 되돌아오게 된 요나는 비로소 올바른 관점에서 상황을 내다볼 수 있었으며, 그래서 하느님께서 다시 한 번 그를 부르시자 곧바로 복종했습니다. 이토록 극적이며 때론 우습기도 한 이 이야기는, 하느님께서는 그분의 뜻을 완수하기 위해서 끈질기게 우리를 쫓아다니실 것임을 극명하게 보여 줍니다.
이런 이야기는 하느님께서 우리에게 말씀하시는 방법 가운데 하나일 뿐입니다. 성경에는 그 밖에도 수많은 역사적인 이야기, 기도, 시, 신학적인 담론, 심지어 우화까지 있어서 우리를 하느님의 빛으로 넘치게 채워 줍니다. 그런데 하느님께서는 성경을 통해서만 말씀하시는 것이 아닙니다. 단 하루 동안에도 그분께서는 음악을 통해, 우리의 상상을 통해, 기도 중에, 일상적인 대화를 통해, 새로운 경험을 통해, 심지어는 오래되고 익숙한 일상의 일과를 통해서 우리에게 말씀하실지도 모릅니다.
당신은 하루에 몇 번이나 하느님께서 하시는 이런 말씀을 ‘알아듣고’ 있습니까? 한 번? 두 번? 한 번도 없나요? 우리는 하느님의 말씀을 기대하면서 귀 기울이고, 또 들은 말씀을 믿고 그대로 따름으로써 하느님의 말씀을 듣는 귀를 키울 수 있습니다. 하느님께서는 늘 우리를 부르시고, 우리가 바쁜 일상의 소음을 뚫고 그분의 부르심을 듣기를 참을성 있게 기다리시면서 우리에게 계속해서 말씀하실 것입니다.
“주님, 말씀하십시오.
당신의 음성을 듣기를 열망합니다.
제가 온종일 당신을 찾을 수 있도록
가르쳐 주시고, 오늘 당신께서 저를 위해
마련하신 ‘놀라운 일들’에 마음을 열 수 있게 도와주십시오. 저의 마음이 당신의 말씀에 누그러지게 하시고, 당신께서 제 곁에 계심을 늘 깨닫게 해 주십시오.”
