The Lord's Prayer is such a quick, familiar, and simple prayer that it's easy to recite it without thinking about what we're praying. And that's too bad, because with the Spirit's help, these words can take on a meaning powerful enough to change our lives over time. It's amazing, in fact, that the whole of the spiritual life and the whole gospel message is contained in a prayer so simple that anyone can learn it. So let's slow down today and ponder how Jesus' words here describe our life in the Spirit and tell us how best to live.
Father, hallowed be your name. Incredible: Jesus' Father is our Father as well. We are his beloved children, made in his image! Plus, he's no ordinary Father. He is holy, perfect, and majestic. And this perfect Father wants you to know his love and presence!
Your kingdom come. We honor our Father when his kingdom is made manifest in our lives. By living and spreading the good news of his message of love and redemption, God's reign expands on earth and we're the ones he has invited to do it!
Give us each day our daily bread. Jesus reminds us of our utter dependence on the Father, because only he can provide the nourishment and strength we need to live each day according to his will. He provides food for our bodies, as well as for our souls in the gift of the Eucharist.
And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us. Our Father is slow to anger and quick to forgive. But remember that we receive God's mercy only to the degree to which we have mercy on other people. So let's try our best to be merciful, even as our Father is merciful (Luke 6:66).
And do not subject us to the final test. Temptation is a normal part of our lives. But our Father is bigger than any test we may face. He is always ready to protect us and strengthen us.
Take this simple, beautiful prayer with you wherever you go. Let these words become your source of strength and trust. Remember what St. Augustine said: "What would God not give to his children who ask, since he has already granted them the gift of being his children?"

‘주님의 기도’는 즉석에서 할 수 있는 익숙하고도 간단한 기도여서, 우리는 그 내용을 새기지도 않으면서 읊어대기가 십상입니다. 그것은 참 유감스러운 일입니다. 이 기도 말씀은 성령의 도우심으로 시간이 흐르면서 우리 삶을 바꿀 만큼 강력한 의미를 지닐 수 있기 때문입니다. 영적인 삶 전체가, 그리고 복음의 메시지 전체가 누구라도 외울 수 있는 간단한 기도 안에 담겨 있다는 것은 사실 무척 놀라운 일입니다. 그러니 오늘 하루 차분하게 예수님의 이 기도 말씀을 통해 성령 안에서의 삶이 어떠해야 하는지 그리고 우리가 그렇게 살려면 어떠해야 하는지를 묵상하도록 합시다.
“아버지, 아버지의 이름을 거룩히 드러내시며” 예수님의 아버지가 우리의 아버지이기도 하다니, 믿기지 않습니다. 우리는 그분의 모상대로 지어진, 그분이 사랑하는 자녀입니다! 더군다나 그분은 보통 아버지가 아니라, 거룩하고 완전하며 위엄이 넘치는 분입니다. 이 완전하신 아버지께서 여러분이 그분의 사랑과 현존을 깨닫기를 바라시는 것입니다!
“아버지의 나라가 오게 하소서.” 아버지의 나라가 우리의 삶에서 명명백백히 드러나니 찬미드립니다. 그분이 주신 사랑과 구원의 기쁜 소식을 실천하고 전함으로써 하느님의 나라가 이 땅에 널리 퍼져나갑니다. 그리고 우리는 바로 그 일을 하도록 그분께 초대받은 사람들입니다!
“날마다 저희에게 일용할 양식을 주시고” 예수님께서는 우리가 하느님 아버지께 전적으로 의탁하고 있음을 일깨워 주십니다. 하느님만이 우리가 그분의 뜻에 따라 매일 살아가는 데 필요한 양식과 강건함을 주실 수 있기 때문입니다. 그분은 우리에게 육체를 위한 양식뿐만 아니라, 성체성사의 은총을 통해 영혼을 위한 양식도 주십니다.
“저희에게 잘못한 모든 이를 저희도 용서하오니 저희의 죄를 용서하시고” 우리 아버지께서는 분노에 더디시고 용서에는 빠르신 분입니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 우리가 다른 이들에게 자비를 베푼 만큼만 우리에게 자비를 베푸신다는 것을 명심하십시오. 그러니 우리 아버지께서 자비로우신 것처럼 우리도 자비로운 사람이 되도록 최선을 다합시다.(루카 6,36)
“저희를 유혹에 빠지지 않게 하소서.” 유혹은 우리 삶의 전형적인 부분입니다. 그러나 우리 아버지께서는 우리에게 닥칠 수 있는 어떤 유혹보다도 더 위대하시어, 언제라도 우리를 보호하고 힘을 주려 하십니다.
여러분이 어디에 가든 이 간단하고도 아름다운 기도를 잊지 마십시오. 이 기도 말씀이 여러분에게 강건함과 믿음의 원천이 되게 하십시오. 그리고 아우구스티노 성인의 말씀을 기억하세요. “당신 자녀가 되는 것을 이미 허락하신 아버지께서 자녀들이 드리는 기도에 무엇을 거절하실 수 있겠습니까?”
