"Stop making my Father's house a marketplace." (John 2:16)
With a zealous display of indignation, Jesus called attention to the fact that God's holy Temple was not being used to fulfill its purpose as a "house of prayer for all peoples" (Isaiah 56:7). The outer court, where this episode took place, was supposed to be set aside for Gentiles to pray and meditate in peace. Instead, it had become a hectic and distracting marketplace.
In many ways, our lives can be like a marketplacea busy hubbub of activity. But Scripture tells us that we are to be temples of the Holy Spirit, full of his joy and tranquility. Doesn't that sound a bit contradictory? To live in this world, we certainly have to be open to the practical wisdom it offers us. We would be foolish not to take prudent advice about managing our finances, raising our children, or keeping healthy. God doesn't want us to hide our heads in the sand!
At the same time, however, we need to do everything possible to preserve the deepest part of our souls, where the Holy Spirit lives. For though we are in this world, we don't belong to it (John 17:16). Our lives are hidden with Christ, and he must always be our priority. By all means, we should take advantage of the good things in society. But we also need to be sure that the subtle and dangerous philosophies so prevalent today don't grab hold of our hearts.
Today's feast recalls another kind of temple, the Lateran Basilica, which is the seat of the Diocese of Rome. This ancient church is a visible reminder that the pope is also bishop of a diocese. Like all bishops, he faces the challenge of protecting his flock from dangerous influences while not retreating from the world. He and his brother bishops must nurture their own interior livesjust as we doto stay focused on their mission. So let' pray for the church's leaders, that they may defend our apostolic faith and feed and watch over their sheep. May we all guard the temple of the Lord!

“내 아버지의 집을 장사하는 집으로 만들지 마라.”(요한 2,16)
예수님께서는 거침없이 분노하심으로써 하느님의 거룩한 성전이 ‘모든 민족들을 위한 기도의 집’(이사 56,7)이라는 본연의 목적에 충실하지 못하고 있음을 분명히 깨우치게 하셨습니다. 이 일이 일어났던 성전의 바깥뜰은 평화롭게 기도하고 묵상할 수 있도록 이방인들은 접근하지 말아야 할 곳이었지요. 그런데 그러기는커녕 소란하고 정신없는 장사하는 집이 되어 버린 것입니다.
우리의 삶도 이처럼 부산스러운 소음으로 가득 찬 장사하는 집이 될 소지가 다분합니다. 하지만 성경에 따르면 우리는 성령께서 주시는 기쁨과 평화로 충만한 ‘성령의 성전’이 되어야 한다고 합니다. 약간 모순되어 보이지 않습니까? 우리가 이 세상에서 살아가려면 물론 세상살이에서 얻는 실용적인 지혜를 받아들여야 합니다. 가계를 꾸리거나 자녀를 기르거나 건강을 지키는 일에 있어 현명한 조언들을 받아들이지 않는다면 어리석은 일이겠지요. 하느님께서는 우리가 현실을 외면하기를 바라시지 않습니다!
그러면서도 우리는 성령이 거하시는 우리 영혼의 가장 깊은 곳을 지키기 위해서라면 무슨 일이라도 해야 합니다. 우리가 이 세상에 살기는 하지만 세상에 속하지는 않기 때문이지요.(요한 17,16) 우리의 생명은 그리스도와 함께 하느님 안에 숨겨져 있으며, 그분이 항상 우리의 최우선이 되어야 합니다. 우리는 사회의 좋은 점을 어떻게든 활용해야 하지만, 더불어 오늘날 널리 퍼진 교묘하고 위험한 사조들에 마음을 뺏기지 않도록 확실히 단속해야 합니다.
오늘은 또 다른 성전, 로마 교구의 주교좌성당인 라테라노 대성전을 기념하는 날입니다. 이 유서 깊은 교회는 교황 역시 한 교구의 주교라는 사실을 일깨워 주는 눈에 보이는 증거입니다. 그분은 다른 주교들과 마찬가지로 세상에 맞서 위험천만한 영향에서 자신의 양 떼를 지키는 어려운 직무를 맡고 있습니다. 그분을 비롯한 주교단이 자신들의 사명에 전념하려면 우리와 마찬가지로 그분들 자신의 내적 삶을 가꾸어야 합니다. 그러니 교회의 지도자들을 위해서, 그들이 사도로부터 이어오는 우리의 믿음을 지키며 양 떼를 먹이고 돌보게 해 달라고 기도드립시다. 우리 모두가 주님의 성전을 지키는 데 앞장서기를 빕니다!

희망의 횃불이 되게 해 주십시오!
당신의 성령을 보내시어
저희의 지도자들을 인도하시고,
저희가 당신께 헌신하는 순결하고 거룩한 삶을 살도록 도와주십시오.”
