"Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more." (Luke 12:48)
As twenty-first-century Catholics, we have certainly been entrusted with "more." We've been given a legacy of solid teaching, a long tradition of loving care for the neediest, a rich and beautiful liturgy, and a multitude of saints to inspire and pray for us. In our baptism we received forgiveness of sin and new life in union with God. Through confirmation we received the Holy Spirit to energize and direct us. Day by day we can choose to be nourished by the word of God in Scripture and the Eucharist.
Of course, with these many gifts we have also been given many responsibilities. Whether we are priests, nuns, religious, parents, or employees, each one of us is expected to work for the glory of God. Each of us is entrusted with the care of others. How do we exercise our God-given authority?
Like the servants in Jesus' parable, we may be working diligently for the Master, making sure our fellow-servants get what they need in a timely fashion. Or we may be more self-indulgent, using our position and superior knowledge to our own advantage. The choice is ours, and we have the resources to do what pleases the Master.
Doing "more" doesn't always seem like fun, to be sure. We may not like having to put in an honest day's work when the labor seems pointless, or lending a hand with something that isn't part of our job deion. It may not seem that significant, either, as when we bless our children at night and read them a bedtime story. And it may be difficult at times, as when we need to encourage those who seek our counsel, or confront them with gentle correction.
However, whenever we put others' needs before our own, we're always rewarded in the end. When we exercise our God-given talents for the sake of another, we're blessed by tapping into the overwhelming love he has for us as well as for those he's given us to care for!

Free me to give of myself unsparingly,
and to lighten their load with a joyful heart!"

“많이 주신 사람에게는 많이 요구하시고, 많이 맡기신 사람에게는 그만큼 더 청구하신다.”(루카 12,48)
21세기를 살아가는 가톨릭 신자로서 우리는 틀림없이 ‘더 많이’ 받은 사람일 것입니다. 우리는 탄탄한 가르침의 유산과 가난한 사람들을 배려하는 오랜 전통, 풍성하고 아름다운 전례, 그리고 우리를 북돋우고 우리를 위해 기도하는 수많은 성인들을 물려받았습니다. 세례성사에서는 죄를 용서받았고 하느님과 하나가 되는 새 생명을 얻었습니다. 또한 견진성사를 통하여 우리를 격려하고 인도하시는 성령을 받았습니다. 우리가 원하기만 하면 성경에 담긴 하느님 말씀과 성체성사를 통해 날마다 자양분을 얻을 수도 있습니다.
물론 이렇게 많이 받았기 때문에 우리에게는 책임져야 할 것도 많습니다. 우리가 사제나 수도자이든 부모든 혹은 직업인이든 우리는 누구나 하느님의 영광을 위하여 일할 것으로 기대됩니다. 우리는 모두 다른 사람들을 보살필 책임을 지고 있습니다. 하느님께서 주신 이런 직권을 우리는 얼마나 잘 행사하고 있습니까?
예수님의 비유에 나오는 종들처럼, 우리는 다른 동료들이 필요한 것을 제때에 받을 수 있도록 주인을 위하여 열심히 일하고 있을 수도 있습니다. 아니면 우리가 가진 지위와 보다 나은 지식을 자신의 이익을 위해서 멋대로 쓰고 있는지도 모릅니다. 선택은 우리에게 달려 있고, 우리는 주인을 기쁘게 해 드릴 수 있는 것을 모두 가지고 있습니다.
‘더 많이’ 한다는 것은 물론 언제나 즐거운 일은 아닐 것입니다. 무의미해 보이는 일에 하루 종일 매달리고 싶지 않을 수도 있고, 내 일이 아닌 남의 일을 대신하고 싶지 않을 수도 있겠지요. 또한 아이들에게 잘 자라고 축복하고 머리맡에서 책을 읽어 주는 일처럼 그리 중요해 보이지 않는 일일 수도 있습니다. 조언을 구하는 사람에게 격려의 말을 해야 하거나 부드럽게 타일러야 할 때처럼 때론 하기 곤란한 일도 있지요.
그러나 우리가 우리 자신보다 다른 사람을 더 배려한다면, 결국에 가서는 거기에 대한 보답이 반드시 따를 것입니다. 우리가 하느님께 받은 재능을 다른 사람을 위해 쓰면 곧 우리에게 은총이 내리는데, 그것은 하느님께서 우리에게 품으시는, 그리고 우리에게 돌보라고 맡기신 사람들에게 품으시는 ‘넘치는 사랑’이 바로 우리에게 흘러들어오기 때문입니다!
“거룩하신 주님, 저는 때때로
제가 진 책임의 무게에 짓눌립니다!
제가 사랑하는 사람들을 보살피는 이는 제가 아니라 주님이심을 믿게 도와주십시오.
자신을 아낌없이 내어 줄 수 있도록
저를 자유롭게 하시고,
즐거운 마음으로 그들의 짐을
덜어주게 하여 주십시오!”
