It wasn't that long ago that when parents learned they were expecting a new baby, they were often asked whether they were hoping for a boy or girl. Now, with all of the medical technology available, it's possible for many parents to answer that question early on in pregnancy. In their situation at least, hope is no longer necessary, because the unknown has become known.
As much as science can tell us about natural birth, however, it tells us nothing about spiritual birth. Although we've been baptized into Christ here on earth, we can't look into the future and see our eternal destiny. We still need to hope for our final redemption, when we will be united body, soul, and spirit with Jesus forever. As Paul tells us, all of creation is actually "groaning in labor pains" along with us, until Jesus brings everything to fulfillment in him. Does that sound a little unpleasant to you?
Of course, we'd rather not have to wonder about our future, nor that of our loved ones. But the fact that we must have hope is a good thing! The virtue of hope brings us an opportunity to glorify God while we go through this "valley of tears." It's related to faith because it is our belief in God's love for us that keeps us hoping in the first place. Every time we exercise trust and hope in him, we come that much closer to heaven. Christ is our hope, after all!
Every day, we encounter situations where we need hope. But if we knew how God would work them out, we wouldn't have the chance to demonstrate our conviction and grow in holiness. When we can pray for someone for weeks, months, or even years, we can be sure we are getting closer to Jesus. When we can keep working toward something we know is God's plan despite opposition and dissent, we know he is with us. We don't have to count on will power to get us through. We can count on the power of his Spirit, who is always telling us that hope will not disappoint!

by sending us your Son to us.
Keep me focused on your loving plan
of salvation as I place my hope in you!"

얼마 전까지만 해도 어느 집에서 아이를 가졌다는 게 알려지면 사람들은 그들에게 딸을 바라는지 아들을 바라는지 물어보았습니다. 이제는 의학기술의 발전 덕분에, 많은 부모들이 임신 초기에 그 답을 알 수 있게 되었습니다. 적어도 그러한 경우에는, 모르던 것을 알게 되었으니 더 이상 기대를 할 필요가 없어집니다.
과학은 육체적 탄생에 관하여 알려 줄 수는 있지만, 영적 탄생에 관해서는 아무것도 말해 주지 못합니다. 비록 우리가 이 세상에서 그리스도로 세례를 받았지만 우리는 미래를 내다볼 수도, 변치 않는 우리의 운명을 알 수도 없습니다. 우리에게는 여전히 우리의 몸과 마음과 영혼이 예수님과 영원히 하나가 되는 마지막 구원에 대한 희망이 필요합니다. 바오로 사도가 우리에게 말하는 것처럼, 예수님께서 우리 모두를 당신 안에서 완전하게 해 주실 때까지, 모든 피조물은 사실 우리와 함께 “탄식하며 진통을 겪고” 있는 것입니다. 이 말이 좀 거북하게 들립니까?
물론 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람의 미래를 걱정하지 않아도 되는 편이 더 낫겠지요. 그러나 우리가 희망을 가져야만 한다는 사실은 좋은 일입니다! 희망의 미덕은 우리가 이 “눈물의 골짜기”를 지나갈 때 하느님을 찬양할 수 있게 해 줍니다. 처음에 우리가 희망을 가진 것은 우리를 향한 하느님의 사랑을 믿었기 때문이므로 그것은 신앙과 관계가 있습니다. 우리가 주님을 믿고 희망을 품을 때마다 우리는 그만큼 하늘 나라에 가까이 다가가는 것입니다. 그리스도만이 우리의 희망입니다!
우리에게는 날마다 희망이 필요한 일이 생겨납니다. 그런 때마다 하느님께서 어떻게 해 주실지를 안다면, 우리는 우리의 신념을 드러내고 성화되어 갈 기회가 없게 되겠지요. 누군가를 위하여 몇 주간, 몇 달간, 어쩌면 몇 해간 계속해서 기도할 수 있을 때, 우리는 예수님께 가까워지고 있다는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리가 반대와 이견을 무릅쓰고 하느님의 계획이라고 알고 있는 것을 향해 매진한다면, 주님께서 우리와 함께하실 것을 우리는 압니다. 난관을 뚫고 나가기 위해 정신력에 의지할 필요가 없습니다. 우리에게 희망이 헛되지 않으리라고 끊임없이 말씀하시는 그분 영의 힘에 의지하기만 하면 됩니다!

감사드립니다.
주님께 제 희망을 두면서
주님의 사랑 넘치는 구원 계획만
생각하게 하여 주십시오!”
