In today's first reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah we hear the familiar Advent prophecy: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light ..." We certainly associate this light with Jesus, light that came into the world. Along with light comes great hope. Things will surely get better!

묵상: 이사야서에 의한 제1독서에 유명한 대림 예언이 나옵니다: 어둠 속을 걷던 백성이 큰 빛을 보았습니다뀛 이 빛은 예수님이십니다. 이 세상에 오신 빛이십니다. 이 빛과 함께 큰 소망이 옵니다. 세상은 반드시 좋아질 것입니다.

We find ourselves in the Season of Ordinary Time. The days are short, the nights long and cold. We go about our business. Yet in the very ordinariness of our days and lives God calls us. Sometimes that call can be so subtle that we hardly notice it. Sometimes we have been programmed not to listen to it. And the call is repeated, over and over again.

이제 연중 시기에 들어와 있습니다. 낮은 짧고 밤은 길고 춥습니다. 우리는 이제 일상의 업무를 시작합니다. 이런 평범한 우리의 삶에서 하느님께서는 우리를 부르십니다. 가끔 그 부르심이 너무 섬세하여 우리가 알아듣지 못합니다. 어떤 때는 알아듣지 못하도록 우리 자신이 프로그램 되어 있어서 못 알아듣습니다. 그래도 그 부르심은 계속해서 반복됩니다.

This season of the year is one of depression for many people. They're deprived of the sunlight they need, and the fresh air and flowers that makes life so much nicer. Many people are confined to their homes almost all week long. We're told that it's not a good idea to make major life decisions this time of year.

많은 사람에게 연중 이때쯤은 우울합니다. 필요한 일조량도, 맑은 공기도, 그리고 주위를 밝게 하는 꽃도 없기 때문입니다. 사람들이 일주일 내내 집에만 있기도 합니다. 그래서 일년 중 이 시기에는 중요한 결정을 내리지 않는 것이 좋다고 합니다.

Sometimes our general crabbiness leads to division. Paul says, "I beg you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree in what you say. Let there be no factions; rather, be united in mind and judgment. I have been informed by certain members that you are quarreling among yourselves." Those quarrels and struggles can be very detrimental. They can tear apart our family, work place, school or Church community. God's call to us is one that leads us to unity. That can mean not listening to the kind of talk that brings about division.

가끔 우리의 괴팍함 때문에 분열이 일어납니다. 바오로는 말합니다, 나는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 여러분에게 권고합니다. 모두 합심하여 여러분 가운데에 분열이 일어나지 않게 하십시오. 오히려 같은 생각과 같은 뜻으로 하나가 되십시오. 나의 형제 여러분, 여러분 가운데에 분쟁이 일어났다는 것을 어떤 사람들이 나에게 알려 주었습니다. 그런 분쟁과 갈등은 매우 해로울 수 있습니다. 우리의 가정과 직장, 학교 또는 교회 공동체를 갈라 놓을 수 있습니다. 하느님의 부르심은 우리를 일치로 이끄십니다. 그것은 또한 분열로 이끄는 말에는 귀를 기울이지 않는 것을 의미할 수 있습니다.

We need to recognize what is the most important. When Jesus called Simon and his brother Andrew ... and James, Zebedee's son and his brother John and asked him to follow they did just that. They abandoned their father and went off in his company. What an act of faith! Yet somehow they were free enough to respond and follow.

어떤 것이 가장 중요한가를 알아야 합니다. 예수님께서 시몬과 그의 동생 안드레아 그리고 제베대오의 아들 야고보와 요한을 부르시고 따르라고 하셨을 때 그들은 그대로 했습니다. 그들은 아버지를 남겨두고 예수님과 함께 길을 떠났습니다. 얼마나 깊은 믿음입니까? 결국 그들은 곧 응답하고 따를 만큼 자유로웠습니다.

God calls us to live as men and women of God. As such, we need to see beyond the deception of the values of the world's values. We need to see the damage our quarreling and fighting causes, not just to us, but to others as well. We need to focus once more on what's really important. When making decisions we need to leave self-interest behind and seek God's will.

하느님께서는 우리를 하느님의 자녀로서 살도록 부르십니다. 그러므로 우리의 시야는 헛된 세상의 가치를 뛰어넘어야 합니다. 우리의 분쟁과 싸움이 우리뿐만 아니라 다른 사람들에게도 미치는 피해를 알아야 합니다. 다시 한번 가장 중요한 것에 초점을 맞추어야 합니다. 어떤 결정을 할 때, 우리는 자신의 이익을 뒤로 하고 하느님의 뜻을 따라야 합니다.

This weekend's readings call us back to what is truly important. We know the light of Christ has come into the world to break the barriers of sin, death and darkness. We are called to be people of that light. We need to shun anything that distracts us from doing God's work. We need to keep ourselves free enough to respond to God's call when it comes.

오늘 독서의 말씀은 우리를 다신 진정 중요한 것으로 부르십니다. 죄, 죽음, 그리고 어둠의 장벽을 무너뜨리기 위해 예수님의 빛이 세상에 오신 것을 압니다. 우리도 그 빛의 백성이 되라는 부르심을 받습니다. 우리는 하느님의 일을 하는데 방해가 되는 것은 무엇이든 버려야 합니다. 우리도 하느님의 부르심이 있을 때, 곧 응답할 수 있도록 자유로워야 합니다. 

God calls us to be the ones who bring light into this darkened world. He calls us to be the ones that remove the yoke that burdens those around us that they can live in the freedom of God's children. He calls us to be people who see beyond our differences, follow God's call to reconciliation and build the kind of peace God would like us to have. When Jesus says, "Follow me," we need to be free enough to get up and go! We need to set an example that will help our children and grandchildren to do the same.

하느님께서는 우리가 어두운 이 세상에 빛을 가져오는 사람이 되라고 부르십니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 이웃의 멍에를 제거하여 그들이 하느님의 자녀로서 자유롭게 살 수 있도록 하라고 부르십니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 각자의 차이를 극복하고 하느님의 부르심을 따라 화해하고 하느님께서 우리에게 바라시는 그런 평화를 쌓으라고 하십니다. 예수님께서 나를 따르시오,라고 말씀하실 때 우리는 즉시 일어나서 떠날 수 있도록 자유로워야 합니다. 우리가 모범을 보여서 우리 자식과 손자들이 그대로 할 수 있도록 해야 합니다.

So we live this ordinary week as God's children. We encourage one another as best we can. We look for God's way as we hear so many confusing messages. We strive to respond and to follow, and to show our children and others around us how to do the same. God's call will come to us many times this week. As men and women of God, we need to keep ourselves free enough to respond. Have a good week!

그렇게 우리는 이 연중 시기를 하느님의 자녀로서 삽니다. 우리는 서로를 최대한 격려합니다. 우리가 듣는 많은 혼란스런 말 중에서 하느님의 길을 찾습니다. 우리는 응답하고 따르려고 노력합니다. 그래서 우리의 자녀들과 주위의 사람들이 그대로 하도록 합니다. 이번 주에도 우리는 하느님의 부르심을 자주 접할 것입니다. 하느님의 백성으로서 응답할 수 있도록 자유로울 필요가 있습니다. 안녕히 계십시오.

SUNDAY ALIVE, January 27, 2008  Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)

Jesus' invitation to 'Come, follow me' (v. 19 NIV) is extended to every human being. Christian faith is profoundly rooted in this personal, heart-to-heart, one-to-one invitation. We don't adhere to a philosophy or worship a distant deity: we follow Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus promised the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James and John that rather than fishing for fish, from now on they would fish for men. Christian faith is profoundly rooted in this vision. We too are called to follow Jesus and evangelise.

나를 따라오너라라는 예수님의 초대는 우리 모두에게 해당됩니다. 크리스천 신앙은 이 인격적이고, 마음 대 마음의, 일 대 일의 초대에 깊게 뿌리를 두고 있습니다. 우리는 철학에 매달리거나 멀리 있는 절대자를 숭배하지 않습니다: 우리는 나자렛의 예수님을 따릅니다. 예수님께서는 어부인 베드로, 안드레아, 야고보, 그리고 요한에게 고기잡이가 아니라 이제부터 사람 낚는 어부가 되라고 하십니다. 크리스천 신앙은 이 비젼에 깊이 뿌리내리고 있습니다. 우리도 예수님을 따라 전도하라는 부르심을 받습니다.

Many fudge this issue by saying we are called to evangelise culture with the witness of our lives and by being good and diligent citizens. Those who hold to this view fail to acknowledge that an atheist can behave extraordinarily well (witnessing to joy, kindness and goodness) and that people of no faith or conviction make excellent citizens of the state.

많은 사람들이 이 문제를 얼렁뚱땅 넘기고 있습니다. 우리의 삶으로 증거하여, 그리고 선량하고 부지런한 시민으로써 문화전도를 하도록 부르심을 받았다는 것입니다. 이런 관점을 가진 사람들은 무신론자도 (기쁨, 친절, 선량한 삶을 증거함으로써), 아주 잘 살 수 있고, 신앙과 깨달음이 없는 사람도 훌륭한 시민이 될 수 있다는 것을 모르는 사람입니다.

To evangelise is much, much more than this. To be clear, though: to evangelise does not mean putting pressure on people. Nor does it mean forcing our views on them: this would be quite wrong and not in the Spirit. As Tertullian said: 'It is certainly no part of religion to compel religion.' However, the great saint and martyr Polycarp was right when he said: 'I exhort you, press on in your course and exhort all men that they may be saved.'

We can be uncomfortable with this idea of being 'saved' but it is important to understand that, in a very real sense, this is what evangelism means: sharing one's faith, bearing witness to the promises of Christ and leading others to faith. As Pope Paul VI said: 'There is no evangelisation if the name, the teaching, the promise, the life, the death, the resurrection, the kingdom, and the mystery of Jesus Christ the Son of God are not proclaimed.'

'구원받는다'는 생각이 마음에 들지 않을 수 있습니다. 그러나, 아주 실질적으로, 구원이 바로 전도 즉, 자신의 신앙을 나누는 것, 예수님의 약속을 증거하는 것, 그래서 다른 사람을 신앙으로 이끄는 것의 목적이라는 것을 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 교황 요한 바오로 6세가 말했습니다: '전도에는 하느님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름, 가르침, 약속, 삶, 죽음, 부활, 왕국, 그리고 신비가 선포되어야 합니다.'

If we spread the gospel (its witness and its message) we can be sure that God will do the rest. The Holy Spirit is the principal agent of our evangelisation  it is the Holy Spirit who gives us wisdom, clarity, courage and, most important of all, a love for people and a desire that they come to know God's love revealed in and through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

우리가 복음(복음의 증거와 복음의 메시지)을 전하면 하느님께서 나머지를 해주심을 확신합니다. 성령께서 우리의 전도활동에 주된 주체자이십니다  성령이 모든 것을 주십니다. 지혜, 분별, 용기, 가장 중요한 인간에 대한 사랑, 그리고 열정을 주십니다. 사람들이 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 드러난 하느님의 사랑을 알고 체험하도록 돕는 열정입니다.

'Jesus, I follow you because you are my Lord. I witness to my faith because you have called me, as you called Peter, Andrew, James and John, to be fishers of men.'

'예수님, 저의 주님이시니 주님을 따릅니다. 주님께서 베드로, 안드레아, 야고보, 그리고 요한을 사람 낚는 어부로 부르셨듯이 주님께서 저를 부르셨으니 저는 저의 신앙을 증거합니다.'
