REFLECTION

Since the new millennium, the world has been described as a "global village." Advances in communications and information technology have truly made the earth a small place. No country can be considered too remote, no island can be considered too secluded. The physical barriers imposed by distance have broken down, and we now find ourselves in a small world indeed. With these new global links come wealth and knowledge. Billions of dollars in transactions are carried out every day in the major markets of the world, linked electronically with one another. Data on almost any topic can be obtained with ease, with just the click of a computer mouse.

새천년 대에 들어와서 세계는 지구 마을이라고 불리게 됐습니다. 통신과 정보 기술의 발달로 지구는 작아졌습니다. 어느 나라도 너무 외딸고 어느 섬도 너무 격리되어 있다고 할 수 없습니다. 거리에 의한 물리적인 장벽은 허물어졌고 세상은 정말 작아졌습니다. 이러한 지구 결합은 부와 지식을 생성시킵니다. 세계의 주요 시장은 서로 전자통신으로 연결되어 하루에 수 십억 달러의 거래가 이루어지고 있습니다. 어떤 주제의 자료라도 컴퓨터의 마우스클릭으로 쉽게 얻을 수 있습니다.

Unfortunately, bridging the information and communications divide has not readily translated into a more peaceful existence for the world. Ethnic strife continues to cause wars and civil disturbance in many countries. Religious intolerance still flourishes, hand in hand with militant fundamentalism. Racial prejudice still abounds in even more malevolent forms. It is ironic indeed that at a time when nations and peoples can communicate as they have never done before, hate and misunderstanding continues to hold sway in the hearts and minds of many.

정보나 통신의 분할은 메워졌는데, 불행하게도, 이것이 좀더 평화로운 세상을 만드는 데에는 기여하지 못했습니다. 많은 나라에서 민족간의 반목이 계속해서 전쟁과 사회불안을 야기하고 있습니다. 종교적 불 관용이 호전적인 근본주의와 나란히 기세를 올리고 있습니다. 인종적 편견은 더 악의적인 모습으로 아직도 넘쳐납니다. 얄궂게도 국가간 민족간의 대화가 전에 없이 잘되고 있는 이때에 미움과 몰이해가 많은 사람의 마음을 지배하고 있습니다.

Amidst these contradictions of the new millennium, perhaps the journey of the magi can offer a valuable lesson. Sent by Herod to find a child whom the king wanted exterminated, these wise men traveled far and wide. They were sent to fulfill a tyrant's mission. They arrived at the manger and were moved to adore the Christ child. They left Bethlehem transformed by the wonder they had just beheld, and went on their way emissaries of the goodwill that had changed them.

새천년의 이 자기 모순 가운데에서 동방 박사의 여행이 아마도 값진 교훈을 줄지 모릅니다. 죽이고 싶은 아기를 찾으라고 왕이 보낸 후, 이 현자들은 멀리 두루 여행했습니다. 그들은 전제군주가 준 임무를 수행하기 위해 파견되었습니다. 구유에 도착하였고, 감격하여 아기 예수께 경배하였습니다. 방금 본 놀라움으로 변화되어 베들레헴을 출발하여, 그들을 변화시킨 선의의 밀사로서 길을 계속했습니다.

Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the Gentile peoples, to the whole world. The magi represent us, we who have been graced enough to be encompassed by God's loving plan of salvation. In the arduous journey of the magi, we are invited to see as well the journey of faith we are called to undertake in accepting the gift of our faith. In the offerings of the wise men, we are called to see how we too should give of ourselves in praising Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And in the new path taken by the magi from Bethlehem, we should see the directions we are called to change in our lives as we allow Jesus' message to vivify us.

주의 공현축일은 예수님께서 이방인들과 온 세상에 나타나심을 경축합니다. 동방박사는 우리를 대표합니다. 그 우리는 주님의 사랑 넘치는 구원 계획에 참여하는 은총을 받았습니다. 동방박사의 힘겨운 여정 안에서 우리는 신앙의 여정도 보도록 초대됩니다. 우리도 신앙의 선물을 받아들여, 신앙의 여정을 떠나도록 부르심을 받습니다. 현자들의 봉헌을 보고, 주님이시고 구원자이신 예수님을 찬양하기 위해 우리도 어떻게 자신을 봉헌할 수 있을까 생각하도록 부름 받습니다. 베들레헴을 떠나 다른 길을 택한 동방박사들을 보고, 예수님의 메시지로 활기를 찾으면서, 우리 삶에서 요구되는 변화의 방향을 보아야 합니다.    

And in this journey, there can be no shortcuts. Quite contrary to the "instant" and "automatic" mindset that the wonders of technology inculcate in our consciousness, we are called to dedicate the rest of our lives to appreciating the great gift of Jesus, the great gift of our faith. This entails patience, generosity, tolerance, understanding, love, and all those values against which the world of today seems to militate.

이 여정에는 지름길이 없습니다. 기술의 발달이 우리의 의식세계에 심어주는 즉석 자동의 사고방식과 매우 대조적으로, 우리는 우리의 여생을 바쳐 예수님의 크신 선물, 우리 신앙의 위대한 선물에 감사하도록 부르심을 받습니다. 그렇게 하기 위해서 인내, 관용, 도량, 이해, 사랑, 그리고 오늘의 세상이 조장하는 것과는 반대되는 모든 가치들이 필요합니다.

But if we are to persevere, the reward is great. It is the great realization that we are truly "members of the same body and sharers of the promise through the preaching of the Gospel." Adoring Christ and all that he represents, perhaps it is not hoping in vain that we, the humanity housed in this "global village" of ours can still be truly one world, one people.

그러나 우리가 끈기 있게 노력하면 큰 보상이 있을 것입니다. 이는 우리가 진정 복음의 가르침을 통하여, 한 몸의 지체가 되며, 약속의 공동 수혜자가 되는 것입니다. 그리스도와 그분의 모든 말씀과 행동을 찬양하면서, 우리 시대의 지구 마을에 함께 사는 인류로서, 우리가 여전히 진정 하나의 세계요 하나의 백성이 될 수 있다고 바라는 것은 헛된 소망은 아닐 것입니다.

With Jesus, we the people who have been groping in darkness have been truly given a great light. In this great enterprise, it is Jesus himself who shall be our beacon and guide, for as the prophet Isaiah proclaims, "over us appears His glory." May we be able to manifest that glory to others, and to the whole world.

예수님께서 오심으로써, 어둠에서 헤매던 우리는 진정 큰 빛을 받았습니다. 이 위대한 역사에서 우리의 지표요 가이드는 예수님 자신이십니다. 예언자 이사야가 주님의 영광이 네 위에 떠올랐다.라고 말한 대로 입니다. 우리도 그 영광을 다른 사람들, 온 세상에 드러내게 하소서.
