September 21, 2007, Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and evangelist

HOUSE CALL
"People who are in good health do not need a doctor; sick people do." —Matthew 9:12
Jesus implied that He was a Doctor and Matthew was sin-sick. He had sinned by putting money ahead of God and people. He had collaborated with the Romans in oppressing the Israelites through the corrupt exacting of taxes. Matthew was sick of sin, sick of work, and sick of life. Dr. Jesus made a "house call" at Matthew's office, calling him out of sin-sickness into a healed and abundant life.
Dr. Jesus healed Matthew by eating with him (Mt 9:10), dying for him (Jn 15:13), and pouring out the Spirit on him. He made Matthew whole so he could become an apostle, a missionary, and a Gospel writer. Matthew was so transformed by his life in the Spirit that he laid down his life for Jesus. He was so healed he could be wounded out of love for his Healer and Lord.
The Lord wants to heal you from sickness and for ministry, sacrifice, and persecution, even to the death. Be a Matthew.

“튼튼한 이들에게는 의사가 필요하지 않으나 병든 이들에게는 필요하다..”—마태오 9,12
예수님께서는 당신 자신을 의사로, 그리고 마태오는 죄로 인해 병든 자인 것처럼 말씀하십니다. 마태오는 하느님과 사람 보다는, 돈을 우선시함으로써 죄를 지어왔습니다. 부정하고 가혹한 세금 징수를 통해 이스라엘 백성을 등지고 로마인과 손잡아왔습니다. 마태오는 죄로 병들고, 직업에서도 삶에서도 병든 상태였습니다. 의사 예수님은 마태오의 직장으로 “왕진”하시어, 죄로 인해 병이 든 상태에서, 치유 받아 풍요로운 삶으로 불러 내시었습니다.
의사이신 예수님은 그와 함께 먹고 (마태 9,10), 그를 위해 목숨을 내놓으시고 (요한 15,13), 성령을 부으심으로써 마태오를 치유하셨습니다. 마태오를 건전하고 원만하게 만듦으로써 그가 사도이며 선교사이자 복음사가가 될 수 있었습니다. 마태오는 성령 안에서의 삶에 의해 완전히 변화되었기에 예수님을 위해 목숨을 바쳤습니다. 치유가 완전했기에 자신의 치유자이자 주님이신 분을 향한 사랑의 힘으로 상처를 감당할 수 있었습니다.
주님께서는 우리를 병으로부터 치유해 주시고자 하시며, 봉사와 희생과 박해 받을 경우를 위해, 심지어 우리의 죽음까지도 치유해 주시고자 하십니다. (여러분도) 마태오가 되십시오.
