In today's gospel reading, Jesus presents to us a very clear challenge. If we are going to be his disciples then it is going to come with a cost. In the first example that Jesus uses in the gospel, he tells us that if we are going to build something, we have to calculate the cost and make sure that we are able to do it. Otherwise, we are going to be ridiculed if we start the project and cannot finish it. Then, he uses another example about an army that is coming against us and we have to calculate, again, whether we are going to be able to withstand that enemy or whether we should try to make terms of peace.

오늘 복음에서 예수님께서 제시하신 것은 우리에겐 분명한 도전입니다. 우리가 예수님의 제자가 되기 위해서 우리는 값을 치러야 합니다. 첫 번째 예에서 예수님께서는 우리가 무엇을 지을 때, 짓기 전에 비용을 계산하여 지을 수 있는지를 확인한다고 하십니다. 그렇지 않으면 건축을 시작하고 끝내지 못하는 우를 범할 것입니다. 다음의 예에서 예수님께서는 적군이 우리를 치러 올 때, 또한 계산을 해서 적의 침입을 견딜 수 있을지 아니면 화평을 맺어야 할 지를 따져본다고 말씀하십니다.
We need to really look seriously at this because this is precisely what all too many Catholics are doing today. The enemy is Satan and all of his minions. The one who will ridicule us for the rest of eternity is Satan and there is only one reason why he is going to be able to do that and it is because we did not live the life that we professed to live as Catholics.
심각하게 들여다 볼 일입니다. 오늘날 우리 많은 가톨릭 신자들이 행하는 일이기 때문입니다. 적군은 사탄과 그 부하들입니다. 사탄은 우리를 영원까지 괴롭힐 것이며 그렇게 할 수 있는 단 한 가지 이유는 우리가 가톨릭 신자로서 우리가 살겠다고 고백한 대로 살지 않았기 때문입니다.
Many call themselves Catholic, but all too many Catholics are trying to make peace terms with Satan because he is marching against them with his army. It makes it look difficult to be a Catholic. It is a lot easier to do what everyone else is doing. So, why not make peace terms with the devil, because what he is offering is more fun than what Jesus is offering? After all, look at what Jesus tells us the cost is going to be: If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. And, unless you turn your back on all of your possessions you cannot be His disciple.

These are some pretty difficult demands. We need to look seriously at them. Most of us have gotten to the point where we read these passages in scripture and we just sort of ignore them, but Jesus made it very clear that this is the cost. What this means is that Jesus needs to be the top priority in our lives, and the reason for that is because if something else is the top priority, whether that is some person or some thing, everything else is completely out of focus.

If God is not the top priority in our lives, we begin to shift our priorities around in order to make sure that whatever we have chosen to be our top priority, winds up being safe and attainable, whatever it may be. On the other hand, if God is our top priority, then we are going to do things God's way.
하느님께서 첫 자리에 계시지 않으면 우리의 삶은 방향을 잃고, 무엇이든 우리가 선택한 것이 첫째가 되고, 그것이 무엇이든지 결국 안전하고 얻을 수 있는 것이 될 것입니다. 반면에 하느님께서 첫 자리에 계시면, 우리는 하느님의 길을 걸을 것입니다.
When we hear these words of Jesus, "Unless you hate your mother and father, your husband and wife, your children, you cannot be my disciple," we would think that he must be asking us to walk away from them, but he is not. If Jesus has called you to marriage and given you a spouse and children, he is not going to take them away from you. The point that Jesus is making is a very simple one. If you put Jesus as your top priority, then you will love your spouse and children the way that you are supposed to, wholeheartedly. It has to happen in that order. But if you put your children or your spouse before God, you will soon find yourself treating them in a selfish way and that you are not truly loving them.
자기 아버지와 어머니, 남편과 아내, 그리고 자녀를 미워하지 않으면, 내 제자가 될 수 없다. 이 말씀을 들으면 예수님께서 우리에게 그들을 멀리하라고 말씀하신다고 생각할 것입니다. 그러나 그렇지 않습니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 결혼을 명하시고 배우자와 자식을 주셨다면 예수님께서 그들을 빼앗아 가지 않으실 것입니다. 예수님의 말씀의 요지는 매우 간단합니다. 예수님을 첫 자리에 모시면, 배우자와 자식을 의당 마음을 다하여 사랑할 것입니다. 바른 순서를 따라서 해야 합니다. 그러나 배우자나 자식을 하느님보다 앞자리에 놓을 경우 곧 자신이 그들을 이기적으로 대하고 진정으로 그들을 사랑하지 않는다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.
We need to make the choice. We have embarked upon a journey, a journey to eternity. We need to ask ourselves very seriously if we have considered the cost, if we are going to be able to make the journey. Just think of what it means to be a Catholic. It means to believe in every single thing that the Church teaches, to embrace those teachings and to live them, and that comes down to every facet of our lives.
선택은 우리의 몫입니다. 영원을 향한 여정은 이미 시작됐습니다. 이 여정에 드는 비용을 따져봐야 합니다. 이 여정을 마칠 수 있는지 심각하게 따져봐야 합니다. 가톨릭 신자가 된다는 것이 무엇을 뜻하는지 생각해보십시오. 그것은 교회가 가르치는 모든 것을 믿고 그 가르침을 껴안고 그 가르침대로 사는 것입니다. 우리의 삶 속속들이 그러해야 합니다.
In the society in which we live today, it means that we are seeking holiness and striving for true union with Jesus Christ. If Jesus is not the top priority in our lives, then we are not living truly Christian lives. We need to be serious about what it means to be a Catholic. If we are truly going to live this Christian life, it requires heroic virtue. We should look at our lives and ask ourselves, "How am I doing on ordinary virtue? What is my language like? What did I do the last time someone cut me off as I drove my car? Did I do what scripture says and bless them instead of cursing them?" You can pray for those people rather than curse them.

But many of us have fallen prey to the fact that if we are going to have a bunch of maniacs on the road, then we might as well be one, as well. What good does it do? All that does is prove that you are as stupid as they are. We are called to virtue. We are called to holiness. We are called to be saints. That is what it means to live a Catholic life, to reject the ways of the world, and to live for Jesus Christ. Look seriously at what it means to be a Catholic. Calculate the cost and ask yourself very seriously, "Am I willing to do this? Do I want to take up the Cross and follow Jesus? Do I want to engage in the battle against Satan?"

If we answer that we do not want to engage in the battle, then we have already chosen hell. Therefore, the real questions is, "Where do I want to go for eternity?" If we want to go to heaven, there is only one way and that way is Jesus Christ. If Jesus is not the top priority, and if we are not seriously living our faith, then we are going to try to make peace terms with Satan.
우리의 답이 전쟁에 나가기를 원하지 않는다는 것이면 지옥을 선택한 것입니다. 그래서 진정한 물음은, 영원한 삶에서 우리가 가고 싶은 곳이 어딘지? 이어야 합니다. 천국을 원하면, 길은 오직 하나입니다. 그 길은 예수 그리스도입니다. 예수님께서 첫 자리에 계시지 않다면 우리는 우리의 믿음에 충실하지 않은 것이며 사탄과 화평을 맺으려고 하는 것입니다.
Keep in mind, Satan always double-crosses the ones he seduces. There is no such thing as peace terms with Satan because Satan knows no peace. So if you are at peace with Satan, you are certainly not at peace with Jesus Christ. And, if you are not at peace with Jesus Christ, you cannot go to heaven.
사탄은 유혹하고 배반한다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 사탄과의 화평 같은 것은 없습니다. 왜냐하면 사탄은 평화를 모르기 때문입니다. 따라서 사탄과 평화롭다면 예수 그리스도와는 평화스럽지 않은 것이며 예수 그리스도와 평화롭지 않다면 당신은 천국에 갈 수 없습니다.
My dear friends, this is the importance of this decision that we have to make. We have to calculate the cost, look at what the goal is and realize that there is only one way to get there. Then, we should ask ourselves very seriously, "Am I willing to put everything else aside to follow Jesus?" If we can say a very definite "yes", then we walking the path, difficult though it may be, that leads to heaven.
친구 여러분, 우리가 내려야 할 이 결정이 이만큼 중요합니다. 비용을 계산하고 목표를 보고 그곳에 도달하기 위해서는 단 하나의 길이 있다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그리고 자신에게 진지하게 물어야 합니다, 예수님을 따르기 위해 다른 모든 것은 내려놓을 수 있는지? 우리의 대답이 분명한 예스 이면, 우리는 험난하지만 천국에 이르는 길을 걷는 것입니다.
