BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL
"Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die." —Jeremiah 38:10
Jeremiah was literally stuck in the mud and left to starve (Jer 38:6, 9). Ebed-melech came to the rescue. The Bible mentions that Ebed-melech was a Cushite, that is, from a country of black people.
Few appreciate the role black people have played in God's plan of salvation as revealed in the Bible. For example, the first missionary chosen to take the gospel "even to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8) was the Ethiopian eunuch, a black man (Acts 8:27ff). Also, black men provided the prophetic revelation to send Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary journey. "There were in the church at Antioch certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon known as Niger (black), Lucius of Cyrene..." (Acts 13:1). The town of Cyrene was in Northern Africa, and therefore Simon of Cyrene, the man chosen to carry Jesus' cross to Calvary, was quite possibly a black man (Lk 23:26).
Black brothers and sisters have been and continue to be of great importance in God's plan of salvation. Thank God for the faith of black people. Black is beautiful.

흑인, 멋집니다!
“그러자 임금이 에티오피아 사람 에벳 멜렉에게 명령하였다. ‘여기 있는 사람들 가운데 서른 명을 데리고 가서, 예레미야 예언자가 죽기 전에 그를 저수 동굴에서 꺼내어라.’ ” — 예레미야서 38,10
예레미야가 문자 그대로 진흙 속에 던져져 굶어 죽게 되었을 때 (예레 38,6. 9), 에벳 멜렉은 그를 구하러 왔습니다. 성경에는 에벳 멜렉을 쿠시 인(人), 즉 흑인들의 나라에서 왔다고 쓰고 있습니다.
성경 속에서 보여지듯이 하느님의 구원계획 속에는 흑인들의 역할이 있었지만 우리는 감사할 줄 모릅니다. 예를 들면, “땅 끝에 이르기까지” (사도 1,8) 복음을 전하도록 선택된 첫 선교사는 바로 에티오피아의 내시, 즉 흑인이었습니다 (사도 8,27 이하). 흑인들은 또 제 1 차 선교여행중에 바오로와 바르나바에게 예언의 말을 전해주었습니다. “안티오키아 교회에는 예언자들과 교사들이 있었는데, 그들은 바르나바, 니게르라고 하는 시메온, 키레네 사람 루키오스…” (사도 13,1). 키레네는 북아프리카에 있는 마을이므로, 예수님의 십자가를 칼바리아까지 지도록 불리운 키레네사람 시몬도 흑인이었을 가능성이 매우 높습니다 (루카 23,26).
흑인 형제자매들은 예나 지금이나 하느님의 구원계획에서 중요한 사람들입니다. 흑인들의 신앙심에 대해 하느님께 감사 드립니다. 흑인, 멋집니다!
