STOP SIGN
"We want to see You work some signs." -Matthew 12:38
To those who wanted to see Him work a magic trick, Jesus replied: "An evil and unfaithful age is eager for a sign! No sign will be given it but that of the prophet Jonah. Just as Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man spend three days and three nights in the bowels of the earth" (Mt 12:39-40). In other words, Jesus gave them the sign of the cross as the sign they wanted to see Him work.
The sign of the cross is like a stop sign. When we are driving and we see a stop sign, we automatically come to a stop and look to see what is happening. When we see a crucifix, we must react the same way. We should immediately stop. We look on the crucified Jesus, keeping "our eyes fixed on Jesus" (Heb 12:2). This should stop us in our tracks. We stand speechless before the sight of the Son of God hanging in agony, as have mighty men and women of old (see Is 52:14-15). We listen to Jesus, as He says: "Stop, and know that I am God" (see Ps 46:11).
Stop sinning, stop striving, stop running. "You have only to keep still" (Ex 14:14). Stop, in the name of Love!

as mighty men and women of old age have stood speechless 였지만, 주어가 너무 길기 때문에 뒤로 돌리고 have stood speechless 를 앞으로 돌림. 그렇게 도치한 문장으로 다시 써보면, as have stood speechless men and women of old [age] 가 됨. 여기서 다시 stood speechless 부분은 앞 문장에서 이미 나와 있으므로 (we stand speechless) 또 다시 생략하여 결국은 as have [stood speechless] men and women of old [age] 가 됨. “스승님, 스승님이 일으키시는 표징을 보고 싶습니다.”–마태오의 복음서12,38
예수님께서 마술 같은 기적을 일으키는 것을 보고 싶어하는 사람들에게 예수님께서 이렇게 대답 하셨습니다 : “악하고 절개 없는 세대가 표징을 요구하는구나! 그러나 요나 예언자의 표징밖에는 어떠한 표징도 받지 못할 것이다. 요나가 사흘 밤낮을 큰 물고기 배 속에 있었던 것처럼, 사람의 아들도 사흘 밤낮을 땅속에 있을 것이다”(마태 12,39-40). 즉 예수님께서는 예수님께서 표징을 일으키시는 것을 보고 싶은 자들에게 십자가를 표징 대신 주었습니다.
십자가는 일단정지 표지와 같습니다. 운전을 하다가 일단정지 표지에서 자동적으로 멈춰 서서 무슨 일이 있는지 봅니다. 우리가 십자가를 보면 똑같이 반응을 해야 합니다. 우리는 즉시 멈춰야 합니다. 우리가 “예수님을 바라보며”(히브 12,2) 십자가에 못박히신 예수님을 보게 되면, 가던 길을 멈추게 됩니다. 그리고 그 옛날의 위대한 사람들이 그러했듯이 고통 속에 매달리신 하느님의 아드님을 보면서 말없이 서있게 됩니다. 그러면서 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하시는 것을 듣습니다. “너희는 멈추고 내가 하느님임을 알아라”(참고 시편 46,11).
죄를 그만 짓고, 그만 애쓰고, 그만 달리세요. “너희는 잠자코 있기만 하여라”(탈출 14,14). 사랑의 이름으로 멈추십시오!
