REALITY HITS
"God may well have overlooked bygone periods when men did not know Him; but now He calls on all men everywhere to reform their lives." —Acts 17:30
현실에 직면하여…
" 하느님께서 무지의 시대에는 그냥 보아 넘겨 주셨지만, 이제는 어디에 있든 모두 회개해야 한다고 사람들에게 명령하십니다." —사도 17,30
Throughout our lives, we may not have known the Lord in a deeply personal way, but our lives seemed okay. We were happy at least some of the time. We may even have gone to church and been good people on the whole. Our lack of personal relationship with the Lord was not yet strongly challenged by life or by the Lord. But the Lord will soon question us: "After I have been with you all this time, you still do not know Me?" (Jn 14:9)
살면서 우리는 주님을 아주 깊이 알지 못했을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 살아가는 데 괜찮았습니다. 적어도 몇 번은 행복한 적도 있었고 심지어 교회에 간 적도 있으며 대체로 착히 살았습니다. 하느님과 개인적 교류가 없었다고 해도 아직까지 주님 혹은 삶 때문에 힘들었던 적은 없었을 것입니다. 그러나 주님은 곧 “내가 이토록 오랫동안 너희와 함께 지냈는데도, 너는 나를 모른다는 말이냐?” (요한 14,9)하고 질문을 던질 것입니다.
Hopefully, we will respond to Jesus by surrendering our lives to Him and loving Him with all our hearts and souls (Mt 22:37). If we don't accept Jesus' invitation to know and love Him personally, we will no longer be able to continue as in the past. Life's realities will catch up with us. We will see that something's missing in our lives and that we don't have what it takes to face the realities of suffering, death, love, fear, freedom, and eternity. We will see the need for a Savior and a Lord, the need for God Himself, and for a personal relationship with Jesus.
다행히 우리는 예수님께 우리가 목숨을 다하고 마음과 정신을 다하여 주님을 사랑하는 것으로(마태 22,37) 주님께 응답할 수 있습니다. 주님이 주님을 개인적으로 사랑하고 알 수 있는 기회를 주심에도 받아들이지 않는다면 우리는 예전과 같이 그렇게 살아 갈 수는 없을 것입니다. 삶의 현실이 우리를 덮칠 것입니다. 고통, 죽음, 사랑, 두려움, 자유, 영원이라는 현실에 대항할 것을 가지고 있지 않으며 우리 삶 속에서 무엇인가 빠졌음을 느끼게 될 것입니다. 그래서 우리는 구세주 주님이 필요하며 하느님 그 자체가 필요하며 예수님과 개인적 교제가 필요함을 알게 될 것입니다.

Life's realities will catch up with us ; 삶의 냉혹한 현실이 우리에게 닥칠 것이다. 이런 류의 얘기로 흔히 쓰는 표현 = Reality bites (hard) ! ; 현실은 가혹해. 현실은 괴로워. 여기서 bite 는 '물다, 깨물다' 는 뜻. 원래 이 표현을 전부 다 써보면, Reality bites so hard and it hurts !
as in the past ; 과거 처럼 = as (we have been able to do) in the past
what it takes to face...; it 는 to 이하 부정사를 가리킴. what 는 관계 대명사로서, the thing that 를 대신하는 단어. what it takes to 부정사 와 같은 표현은 일상회화에서도 많이 씀. 원문을 풀어 써보면, we don't have the thing that it takes for us to face the realities... 와 같이 됩니다. (we don't have the thing + For us to face the realities takes the thing)
