CROWDED CONDITIONS
"In view of their numbers, He told His disciples to have a fishing boat ready for Him so that He could avoid the press of the crowd against Him." —Mark 3:9

군중 속에서
“예수님께서는 군중이 당신을 밀쳐 대는 일이 일어나지 않게 하시려고, 당신께서 타실 거룻배 한 척을 마련하라고 제자들에게 이르셨다.”—마르코 3:9

In His public ministry, Jesus was often surrounded, endangered, and hindered by great crowds. Sometimes the crowd of thousands following Jesus was so thick "that they were treading on one another" (Lk 12:1). Jesus was sometimes pushed and shoved in the crowd (see Mk 5:24). He even had to get into a boat to keep the crowd from pushing Him into the water.
예수님께서는 공(公)생활 동안 군중들에게 포위 되기도, 목숨의 위협을 받기도, 길을 저지 당하기도 하셨습니다. 수천 명이 “서로 밟힐 지경이 되면서” 따라올 때도 있었고 (루카 12:1) 군중들이 밀쳐댈 때도 있었습니다 (마르 5:24 참조). 군중들이 물속으로 떠밀지 못하도록 배에 올라타셔야 할 정도였습니다.

The crowd sometimes made it impossible to get food to Jesus (Mk 3:20). On one occasion, the only way the friends of a paralyzed man could get near Jesus was to come in through the roof (Mk 2:4). On another occasion, the only way the short Zacchaeus could even see Jesus was to climb a tree (Lk 19:3-4).
군중들은 예수님께서 식사도 할 수 없게 만들기도 했습니다 (마르 3:20). 한 번은 중풍 병자의 친구들이 예수님 가까이 갈 수 없자 환자를 지붕을 통해 내려 보내기도 했고 (마르 2:4), 키 작은 자캐오의 경우에는 나무 위로 올라가야 예수님을 볼 수 있었습니다 (루카 19:3-3).

Even today Jesus still seems surrounded by crowds. We sometimes must fight our way through a crowd of pride, self-hatred, confusion, doubt, and fear to touch Jesus. Our secular culture tries to stuff us with so many pleasures that we may be crowded out of life with Jesus. However, we can thin out the crowd considerably by repenting of our sins and simplifying our lifestyle. Then we can touch Jesus much more easily.

오늘날에도 예수님께서는 군중 속에 갇혀 계십니다. 예수님을 접하기 위해 우리는 때로 교만, 자기 혐오, 혼동, 의심, 두려움에 가득찬 군중을 헤쳐 나가야만 합니다. 세속적인 우리의 문화는 너무나 많은 쾌락으로 우리 마음을 사로잡아 버린 탓에 결국 우리는 예수님과 함께 하는 삶에서 떠밀려 나갈 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 죄를 회개하고 생활을 단순하게 함으로써 그런 군중 대부분을 분산시킬 수 있으며, 그럼으로써 예수님을 훨씬 더 쉽게 접할 수 있는 것입니다.

public ministry ministry는 성직자나 각료 또는 그 임무를 말하며, 예수님의 public ministry는 흔히 예수님의 세례 이후로부터 십자가 수난까지의 공생활을 지칭함.
surrounded be surrounded with[by] …에 둘러싸이다
endanger …을 위험에 빠뜨리다, 위태롭게 하다.
hinder …을 방해하다, 훼방놓다, 가로막다
tread <땅•장소를> 밟다, 걷다; <길 등을> 걸어서 지나가다.
occasion (특정한) 때(time); 경우 ☞ opportunity [동의어]. on one ∼ 어떤 때.
paralyzed 마비된, 무(기)력한; 성경에서는 중풍 병자로 번역하고 있음.
fight one’s way 싸우며 나아가다, 곤란을 무릅쓰고 나아가다(forward, out).
self-hatred 자기자신을 미워함. hatred (…에 대한) 강한 혐오, 미움, 증오, 반감, 원한;
fear to touch Jesus    a crowd of pride…doubt and fear to touch Jesus 와 같은 구절에서 자칫 fear to touch Jesus 를 “예수님을 접하는 두려움” 으로 잘못 이해할 수 있습니다. (즉, to 부정사 이하를 fear 를 수식하는 것으로 잘못 이해). 하지만 그런 뜻이었다면 정관사 the 를 써서, the fear to touch Jesus 와 같이 했거나 아니면 동격의 of 를 써서 the fear of touching Jesus 와 같이 했을 것.  위 문장에서 to 부정사 이하는 소위 부사적 용법. 결국, 위 문장은 다음과 같이 똑같은 뜻의 문장으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있습니다. To touch Jesus, we sometimes must fight our way through a crowd of pride…doubt and fear.
secular 세속[속세]의(lay), 세속적인(worldly), 현세의(temporal)(↔ sacred)
stuff with ∼ ∼로 틀어막다. 메우다.
so many pleasures that we may    so … that + 주어 + may ~.  너무나 … 해서 (그 결과) ~ 할 정도 이다.  
crowd out <사람•물건을> 밀다; …을 (…에서) 밀어내다.
thin out    분산시키다, 솎아내다
