Gospel (Luke 3:10-18)

The crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none.
And whoever has food should do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.” Soldiers also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?” He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.” Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people.

그때에 10 군중이 요한에게 물었다. “그러면 저희가 어떻게 해야 합니까?” 11 요한이 그들에게 대답하였다. “옷을 두 벌 가진 사람은 못 가진 이에게 나누어 주어라. 먹을 것을 가진 사람도 그렇게 하여라.” 12 세리들도 세례를 받으러 와서 그에게, “스승님, 저희는 어떻게 해야 합니까?” 하자, 13 요한은 그들에게 “정해진 것보다 더 요구하지 마라.” 하고 일렀다. 14 군사들도 그에게 “저희는 또 어떻게 해야 합니까?” 하고 묻자, 요한은 그들에게 “아무도 강탈하거나 갈취하지 말고 너희 봉급으로 만족하여라.” 하고 일렀다. 15 백성은 기대에 차 있었으므로, 모두 마음속으로 요한이 메시아가 아닐까 하고 생각하였다. 16 그래서 요한은 모든 사람에게 말하였다. “나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 준다. 그러나 나보다 더 큰 능력을 지니신 분이 오신다. 나는 그분의 신발 끈을 풀어 드릴 자격조차 없다. 그분께서는 너희에게 성령과 불로 세례를 주실 것이다. 17 또 손에 키를 드시고 당신의 타작마당을 깨끗이 치우시어, 알곡은 당신의 곳간에 모아들이시고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태워 버리실 것이다.” 18 요한은 그 밖에도 여러 가지로 권고하면서 백성에게 기쁜 소식을 전하였다.

Commentary

12‐13. With honesty and courage St John the Baptist lays bare each person’s fault. The chief sin of tax collectors lay in their using their privileged position as collaborators of the Roman authorities to acquire personal wealth at the expense of the Jewish people: Rome specified how much Israel as a whole should yield by way of taxes; the tax collectors abused their position by extorting more than was necessary. Take the case of Zacchaeus, for example, who, after his conversion, admits that he acquired wealth unjustly and, under the influence of grace, promises our Lord to make generous restitution (cf. Lk 19:1-10).

The Baptist’s preaching contains a norm of natural justice which the Church also preaches. Public position should be regarded, above all, as an opportunity to serve society, not to obtain personal gain at the expense of the common good and of that justice which people holding such positions are supposed to administer. Certainly, anyone who has fallen into the temptation of unjustly appropriating what belongs to another must not only confess his sin in the sacrament of Penance if he is to obtain pardon; he must also resolve to give back what is not his.

세례자의 설교에는 교회도 가르치는 자연법적 정의의 기준이 포함되어 있다. 공직은 무엇보다도 공동선을 희생하고, 그런 공직을 차지하고 있는 사람이 지켜야 할 정의를 희생하고, 개인적인 이득을 얻지 않고, 사회에 봉사할 기회로 여겨져야 한다. 분명히 누구든지 남의 것을 부당하게 취하는 유혹에 빠진 사람은 용서 받기 위해 고해성사에서 고백해야 할뿐만 아니라 자기 것이 아닌 것을 돌려줘야 한다.

14. The Baptist requires of everyone-Pharisees, tax collectors, soldiers – a deep spiritual renewal in the very exercise of their job; they have to act justly and honorably. God asks all of us to sanctify ourselves in our work and in the circumstances in which we find ourselves: “Any honest and worthwhile work can be converted into a divine occupation. In God’s service there are no second-class jobs; all of them are important” (B1. J. Escriba, Conversations, 55).

15-17. Using expressive imagery, John announces Christian Baptism, proclaiming that he is not the Messiah; he, who is on his way, will come with the authority of supreme Judge that belongs to God, and with the dignity of the Messiah, who has no human equal.

Brothers and sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
